Title: Hatsan gas spring what model for .25 cal
Post by: ben walker on October 19, 2014, 10:21:09 AM
I have never owned a gas spring as yet . I normaally shoot hpa or pcp in Hatsan or qb79.
I am looking for input on what hatsan gives the most bang for the buck . I prefer .25 cal overall . I've been looking hard at the  125 sniper vortex at PA.

That would be my choice in .25. I have a 125 in.22. It pushes 14.3's at 947fps. It's a very comfortable gun, good ergonomics. I'm guessing the .25 would be in the neighborhood of 700, or so.

The Hatsan 125 and 135 models are probably the best options currently available in a .25 cal spring or gas piston gun.  There are not many other spring or gas ram options right now that are powerful enough to be useful in .25 cal. much further than 25 yards or so.  The big Hatsan magnums will stretch you out to 35 or 40 yards without using holdover, passed that it may literally be hit or miss.  Maybe 50 yards with lightweight FTT's if you are skilled with spring piston rifles and you get one with an exceptionally good barrel.  Best of luck in your search, don't be afraid to return a few guns in order to find a real good one.  By being patient, and willing to return a rifle and wait for a good one, you can get a whole lot more for your hard earned money.

I am hitting Coke Cans at 100 yds consistently with my 25 cal Hatsan 125 .But you have to use a good mildot scope so you can get your holdovers consistent. This rifle can kill a coyote at 40 -50 yds. I use H/N FTT.

I have a 125 sniper in .25 with an aftermarket gas ram. I run average of 860fps with a 25gr exact king diablo.
will lift a squirrel off the branch at 40 yards with an engine room hit. fuse box they just flip right and head south.

Do you know what FPS it is?

That's 41 FPE, and after owning and tuning well over a dozen 125's, I've yet to see one go over 36 FPE. 41 FPE would be not just good, but incredible.

The 125's are the best 25 springer option. I will add though, expect to do some work. A cleanup, lube tune, and seal replacement will more often than not be needed. They tend to be very dirty and gritty internally from the factory, as well as have bad seals.

I'll also add that the bore on the 25's tends to the large size. Many pellets will fit loose. I've even had a couple 25's where pellets like the Cro Mags nearly dropped down into the barrel upon loading. I'd recommend looking for pellets with the larger diameters.

Hey Ben Walker,
After owning the model 135 (.25 cal. - spring), I would say it's a total beast compared to your PCP's.  I've done a full tune and de-tuned the spring a bit, it now shoots H&N 19.91 gr. at 750 fps.
If I were a hunter looking for a .25 cal., I would get the 125 (black) thumbhole stock in a springer for $200 or the camo stock for $229.  The springer has more power than the Vortex and is cheaper.  If you're gonna take the plunge into magnum springer's, a good tune is recommended as Paul68 has said, and after, will be alot closer to Vortex shot cycle.  Save your cash and buy a variable powered Hawke Varmint or Eclipse scope (16x or 24x) with side focus.  You'll then have great power and good eyes for anything - game or target ;)

My Two Cents...............

I will change my statement a bit, that was not an "average" but more of a "topped out"

it will do 805-820, all day long.
its just like my 350 mag that will get 950 all day long, but it will on occasion blast out a1025 a time or two on a single chrony run.

my 125 has done an 860 at any given time. just out of the blue... but it does it when it gets a notion.... so was not a chrony blip....

99% of the time, the use of the Crosman gas springs results in a slight loss of energy. The new Vortex versions of the 125's seem to keep with that trend, although they still routinely hit 30+ FPE in 25 cal.
