I am looking for recommendations for a Field Target Hunter Class scope. I prefer 1/2 mil-dot 30mm 3-12 magnification. All I have really seen are UTG, but I do not like the glass or thick wire on UTG. I think Hawk has better glass, but all I have found in Hawke is MAP6 which I do not like. I am hoping to keep this under $250, but I am not totally opposed to go to the $500 range like I did on my favorite scope (Hawke 8-32X56).

I like the Hawke half mil dot for HFT Jess.
I really like the 6.5-20 or 8.5-25 Sidewinders. Reticle is super thin and the half mil dots are great for hold overs.
I zero at 30 yards so I have no hold unders from 10 - 55 yards.

I think Hunter Class has a 12 mag max. :) I do not think I can use my 8-32X56 just adjusted down to 12.

You sure can Jess!!
Just keep it at 12 mag.

If that is the case I will check with Brazos. :) Believe it or not my CP scope is more clear than my UTG. LOL I just might have to buy 2 more Hawkes 8-32X56 scopes unless I can find one with better glass. ;D It seems I misunderstood the rules, which is not uncommon for me.

Actually, there is a vote at this year's Nationals on limiting max mag for hunter scope. I'd wait to buy a new one until the vote is in first weekend of October.

Jesse,
I know I responded earlier.
The Hawke Panorama will work for you.
Some of them do have the Map6.
Some do not.
1/2 mil dot reticaL.
Good luck. ;)

Thank you, I misunderstood the rules. I just sent some money to a member here for a UTG 3-12 scope. I am the type person that would prefer to use a 3-12 scope so my honesty does not come to question. I am not doing this for any reason except for enjoyment. It is not the score I make against others but the score I make against myself. With that being said I will never enter a contest with big money to the winner (and as a side note: I can not afford the entry fee). LOL

The first time I shot FT at Diablo (before 9/11) I shot my R1 with the 2-7X Beeman 66R.
They didn't have HFT or anything like that.
I think they were just getting started.
I only knocked down 9 of them bad boys.
Can't do a lot of ranging with a 7 power scope.
As it turned out they had classes in the springer section that were dictated by the power of your scope.
<10 power....>10 power
I was the only one with a scope of less than 10 power.
In 2013 when I started up again they had all of these classes based on power plant, pillows, sticks, straps, 60X scope, etc....
I still had the same R1 with the 2-7x Beeman (You would think I would learn) and I still knocked the same 9 targets down.
I was shooting with Motorhead and he had his Marauder all tricked out.....
I bought one and then bought another.
Put on the scopes (Eclipse) and put a Hawke 3-12X nite-eye on the R1.
The Beeman finally rattled to its death after 275,000 pulls of the trigger.
With the Marauder I started getting close to 75% but something was missing.
I missed my springers.
Sold both of the Marauders, both my tanks and my ShoeboxMax..
I did buy a TX200 and I enjoy it almost as much as the R1 (which will be in the box when they lower me into the ground) and do fairly well when I remember to trust the card and not try and chase the groups during the pre-match sight-in period.
The TX has a 4-16X Eclipse and the R1 now has a 6-24X Eclipse.
Yes they are used at 12X.
BTW Jesse, you are permitted to lower your scope magnification if you so desire. I do when shooting off hand, when I remember to... It is a good thing as some of us have a difficult time holding 12X in the wind..
I know Jess would be hooked when he tried his hand at this little game.
Good luck Booger . :D

Jesse,
Order a few of the Gamo targets from PA when they go on sale and set up your own course in the backyard. You have the room.....

I am not sure I have room. I only have 130 yards :) . I have targets set up from 20 to 90 yards. That might be the reason I did as good as I did. They made an exception for me using a gun that cost more than $300 in the fun shoot. He said if I had finished he would have thrown my score out. I had such a good time it would not have mattered. ;) Next match I now have the confidence to do FT springer, My R11 was shooting so good last time I put away my TX200 & HW97K.

Ignore this, but the Leapers Accushot offers the same scope in a compact length "1/2 Mildot glass etched reticle". Been out here for a few years now. It runs in the $149.00 class, and is good and clear. I'll vouch that it's a good sidewheel package design for anything up into the Magnum shooters.
PA sells them. Here's the company link and specs for you. :

As far as shooting FT. Take the one you're most proficient with...it's definitely not a power sport.
An accurate 12fpe is a very profitable investment. Brand name don't matter. Good SHooters shoot.
Look at the rules, and you'll see the max. target range settings are regulated. Bonus is Bonus.

Jesse,
These guys are correct in that in current rules you can use any scope as long as it is set at 12x or less for Hunter Class. Also they are correct that there is a current bylaw being voted on at Nationals (first weekend of October) that, if passed, will not allow the use of scopes that will adjust beyond 12x (meaning 12x max) for Hunter Class. Sounds like you have already ordered a 12x max scope and you are covered. You shot very, very well on Saturday though you did not finish the match. You were easily in PCP territory with your springer. Loose the monopod and get a bipod and you will go far.

Thank you my friend, it was all luck. My rifle just liked me that day.

130 yards....... :P
I have a lousy 6000 sq ft (The house is in the middle of it) and I run four gamos..... ;)

I would look at 1 of the Clearidge scopes or a Japanese made Weaver V series

Currenty .........you're allowed to turn down the power of a scope for both sighting and rangefinding at 12x maximum. If your scope doesn't have a 12x mark on the power ring, it must be set at the next lower power. In the case of the "big Nikko" scope with a 10x mark and the next mark is 15x the shooter must use the 10x setting instead of adjusting between the 10x and 15x mark. Anywhoo....the thinking is that a 12x MAX scope can't be adjusted to exceed 12x and this would relieve the match directors of an added policing chore verifying scope power.
There is now a LOT of friction created by a new rules proposal that would limit the actual scope power to 12x max (no high powered scopes turned down to 12x) but it's facing some strong resistance by MANY who have bought 4-16x (or whatever) variable power scopes specifically for hunter class shooting where the scope is set at 12x max! If the new ruling passes it would force these shooters to either buy new scopes or not shoot HFT with a scope at all.
As I understand the issue.......there was one HFT shooter who won a high level competition with his high power variable scope that was "adjusted" so the power ring read 12x, however the true magnification was more like 20x which would give a definite advantage in determining the distance to the target when rangefinding. Actually, IMHO, the new proposed rule is an over reaction to this "supposed" cheating incident since a max 12x scope can't be adjusted to give more than 12x.
Hopefully the BOG will vote to keep things the way they are for HFT scope requirements!

@ NCED I agree with your statement. I shoot targets in my back yard all the time. One thing I have noticed is that when your scope is maxed out to power it is not as clear. If you adjust it down about a 1/3 of max power you get a better sight picture. That is just my opinion with my cheaper scopes. :)
