I've been talking about this rifle for 2 or 3 years and finally decided to spring for it. I've been tracking it all week, finally moving up in the world to a good german gun. could not WAIT for it to be here. you know the feeling, like waiting for christmas. Well, i opened the box, ooooh, it was beautiful, shouldered like a dream.
hmm…it was missing the sight inserts and…SIGH... it was the wrong caliber. although the box was correct.
NOT that i didn't expect this, this is pretty much how almost every single aspect of my life is.
Well I called AOA and they are shipping a new one, hopefully in .22 tonight and they will pick this one up on monday . they expedited the shipping.
End of the world? no. Were they sorry and are fixing it? yes, of course. Am i still disappointed ? yes.
Somewhere out there though ,is a guy who ordered a .177 and got a .22 instead.
-
That would indeed be disappointing.
I've been pondering a Weihrauch rifle myself. I've almost settled on the HW50S. Actually, the HW95 to me looks a bit classier. The HW95 looks to be a tad bit heavier, shoots a bit harder. Can I ask what went into your decision to go with the HW95 instead of, say the HW50S.
-
i wanted the power of the 95. the one i got was surprisingly light and easy to cock. i chose the luxes also which has the nicer stock.

LOL..........as one who started out with a .177 R9, then "migrated" to a .20 cal, then to a chopped and choked .22 R1 barrel on the .20 R9 (.22 wasn't available for the R9 a couple decades ago), I found that the .177 was the best caliber for my purposes! I then sold both the .20 and .22 barrels and reverted back to .177 never to look back!

One of the "issues" with the HW50 is the double jointed cocking lever which will wear the receiver tube where the "joint slides", plus the cocking effort is increased by the jointed cocking lever relative to the HW95/R9 with a solid cocking lever. For years I owned a HW35 and it also had a double jointed cocking lever which allowed a rather low power output relative to the HW95 with a similar cocking effort.
-
That's very interesting about the double-jointed cocking. I'll look into that - thanks.
But I'm getting a rifle. I've had a Beeman P1 pistol for years but haven't really used it much.
-
Steve, that really not worthy. I feel for ya. I know exactly what it's like to be waiting for a new one, tracking it, trying not to think about it, the whole routine. What a bummer.
Well, I could tell you that the extra wait will make it that much sweeter, but we both know that's hogwash.
I only hope that when the right one shows up it's a real gem, with a super-smooth shot cycle and exceptional wood. You earned it.

Been there. Ordered a 77 in .20 to arrive while the wife was away ;). Got a 77K in .177. The correct gun was at my door when I got home from the Airport with the wife. No sneaking that one into the house ::).
-
Steve, that's a bummer. But it'll be that much sweeter when the right one shows up. BTW, you mentioned that it was easy to cock. You cocked and fired the .177? Or did I misread your post?
Scotty
-
no, i didn't fire it. i de-cocked it. this was before i noticed the .177 on the barrel.
-
Sorry to hear about that Steve! You and I should not hang out much together...my luck has been similar in the last six years!
Let us know when the one you ordered gets in!! well...after those first private moments with her!
Gloss her up and send some pictures!
It' really hard to beat a fine, high quality, gun. it's like sitting in a new Mercedes after driving an old Escort...they both get you there but.....
-
after holding the 95 my xs25 felt like a 2x4 with a piece of rebar attached to it.
-
Steve!!
After getting to know you the past couple years......I am NOT surprised!
Hang in there my friend!! It will be worth it!!!
I have a feeling your other guns will be spending lots of time in the closet!!
-
;D Hey congratulations Steve nice first choice waiting for pics ;D ;D ;D

Thank You Lord I am not the only grown man here to sneak air rifles into the house "after dark" ;) ;) ;) you ve got all my understing lol...

Steve ... O'man !!!
Nothing quite like the wait coming to an end only to take two steps backwards to wait once more :P
Need to get them to send a few tins of pellets or something for what is just about GUARANTEED there fault at AOA for Gun Not being put into the correct box once out ... let alone checking gun over before shipping making sure such things like this don't happen.
AOA ... :-[
-
well i assume they were test firing a 177 and my .22 and put them back in the wrong boxes. one would think, that would be checked carefully. someone was having a bad day.
this came with a crony sheet. at first i thought it was the sheet that was wrong. I'm thinking, where did they find a 10 grain .22? i guess i should have fussed more and see if they would have come up with a bonus. just wondering now that if they were rushing to get my gun out last night they may not have given it the crony test.
-
The front sight inserts are in the little cardboard hanging off the trigger guard.
They are very easy to overlook.

yes thank you,no hang tag, but since it was the wrong caliber the fact that they weren't there didn't matter any way.
-
Bummer Steve, sorry to hear that. Hang in there, it will be worth it. It would be funny if someone else in the GTA posted they got a 22 instead of a 177. Can't wait for our next shoot to see it.

i was wondering the same thing, i guess not every air gunner is a member here, too bad.
-
Unorganized for such a big air gun dealer. When is your HW95 expected? Knowing what goes on there you should call to make sure it was shipped because they might be waiting for the .22 return.
-
they were very cool, shipped my new gun right away, sent a tracking number, should be here wednesday, they are picking up the other one tomorrow.

;) ;) ;D ;D ;D Step away from the window or bring the paper towels and Windex with you and stop staring at the monitor the tracking updates are only 3 or 4 times a day. ;D ;D ;D ;D

My next gun I want a HW98 .22 (I love my .177), but having to go through AOA makes me rethink about getting another air gun because I have too many. If I sell a few I just might just do it. Then all I have to worry about is tuning fees.

they were very good when i called, there are lots of guys here who've used them with no problem, its just the way it always works for me.

Call me cynical but I'm betting there is someone out there who ordered a .177 and a .22 and returned the .177 in the .22 box. Vendor failed to check on the restock and you got the result...
-
Great news Steve. Can't wait to see it. I guess we need to have another shoot. Was thinking about end of next month. I will work on a date this weekend, and contact everyone.

I do not believe you. I do not see any pictures. No pictures=Didn't happen. ;)
-
;D ;) ::) ??? :P Wow I absolutely cannot believe the mighty Joe missed an opportunity to remind someone he knows especially a South Jersey shooting buddy no pictures = it ain't real + never happened ;D ;D ;D
-
I know Steve well enough to not believe a word he says!!
Pics aren't gonna do it!!! I gotta hold this lady at the next shoot......I still might not believe him tho!!
;D
-
Well. Just came back in from shooting the hw95. I gotta say, I was expecting it to be wonderful. I'll compare it to my $220 MM tuned xs25.
1st
The cocking effort is not hard at all, about the same as the xs25.
The trigger is nice, but really about the same as my xs25 but much more crisp, I assume this will really shine while shooting at targets.
Off hand at 20-30 yards, not so much.
The stock! Well it's just beautiful and fits me perfectly.
Blueing is what you would expect from a good rifle or pellet gun. It not amazing like say an old colt or smith and Wesson from years ago.
What surprised me was the spring torque sound and slight "honk" when cocking, I'm hoping that will go away.
But worse, is the "BUZZ" Holy mother of god! It sounds like the noise you might hear coming from a breaker panel when someone Jams a knife into a toaster and electrocutes himself. What a disappointment.
I know, I know, all guns need some work but this buzz makes the twang I had on my old 34 seem like nothing. Sounds like a loose nut on my cars catalytic converter.
So I , like many other really don't think a $450 ag should have to be tuned to tolerate but I guess I'll have to order a tune kit
-
Believe it or not after 1500 shots most of it goes away. I was going to do a full tune on my R11, but I think just a lube tune will do the job.
-
;) Steve just not so good up to Tom with that awesome AG workshop I'm sure he may be willing to instruct you in the fine art of doing a lube and home tune . Reality is I think his home shop is in the same league as a pro tuner's shop
-
I think Tom sends his out. Maybe I should get the kit and we all put it in together at toms next shoot. It'd be a learning experience for everyone
-

If we get there early and help with the set up I would be happy to help with the rifle ;D I'll even let you play with the S510 Marauder .25 Rainstorm II .22 and if you act sufficiently humble I may even allow you to play with my newest toy ;D ;D
-
Hmmm...humble? That may be tuff. ; )
-
Ummmmm that is NOT happening!!!
Humble and Steve??? NOPE

You are tempting me to ask the question no biker will ask another biker. :)
-
steve... even 450 dollars rifles can get a little help from tuning... it will get quieter but that will be in a couple of tins... tuning gets you there now. good luck.
-
3 pages and still no pic?
I don't care if that rifle barks like a dog when fired...I wanna see that stock!!
-
I just have my phone so quality may not be so great, I should shoot a video so you can hear the buzz
-
Stevie!!
In this particular instance you are starting with a great rifle. Little TLC and she will be absolutely awesome!! She'll be your favorite in no time bro!!
And wait 1 cotton pickin minute!!!! A photographer with no camera???? Sacrilege!!!
;D
-
;D ;) Wow just wow , Sharky are you going to give up any more dirt on Steve before the next shoot. Steve both my TX 200 MK III .22 and Diana 460 .177 were helped with the through cleaning in and out with Vortek kits so yes even upper end springers need some extra TLC to get the most from them. Remember they are still mass produced even though quality rifles
-
I do have decent camera with me but no way to get the pics on my ipad.
AoA gave me a cute little tin of mints, balls about 8-9mm in diameter , just threw some down on the rocks and was picking them off (20-25feet) with the open sights off hand, yes ,I do think this will be my favorite rifle. Just gotta kill the BUZZ.
-
Very nice Steve. You only had it 2 days, and your favorite already. I wonder how that happened. If you get down this way, to see your daughter give me a call. Scopes are waiting for you.
Tom

My R11 is already my favorite rifle, and it still has a little buzz. I sent off my TX200 today and when she returns I will get my R11 tuned from crown to trigger. :) If I have to pay for a tune I am going to get it done right. :)
-
Steve: All I can say is, "Vortekproducts"
Product Code: 780125315p200-1xTC kit
-
I fear that if I take it apart I'll never get it back together, but I think a vortek kit is in my future. Is there a way to get rid of the buzz without spending another $80?
-
I fear that if I take it apart I'll never get it back together, but I think a vortek kit is in my future.
Do not toss out a James Maccari kit. Some people like Ford, others like Chevy. :)
-
Steve if the buzz is that bad, we could try a little heavy tar on the spring. Won't work as good as a kit, but should help some.
Tom

;D There is also the Ghetto Tune with a spring sleeve from a gallon milk jug ask Mark611

That's right, I remember reading about that. That may be all I need. Other than the buzz the gun shoots very well.

Hey brother, looks like you got a bummer rifle. I have Mr. Grant in my pocket, I will help you out of your jam. :)
-
HI Steve
My new R9 had the common so called twang, after a few hundred shots, i opted for a fitted spring guide, that solved it. got a pc of 3/4" dia delrin and machined one up, just goes bump. not sure about the tar thing. especially in the R9 or your gun, i cannot see it being consistent over the chrony and warm to a cold gun change in the POI, if you send your gun out to a tuner, that is the one of the things that gets done to it and the proper way to go about the twang issue, almost forgot the Vortex kit will do the trick too.
Chet
-
I am a newbie to air guns so take what I say keeping that in mind. After lots of research I picked up an R9 from Pyramydair. I was just as impressed as I thought I would be on the quality of construction and components. Shooting it though was a real eye opener. The cocking and loading cycle was smooth and precise but the shot cycle very loose, long and noisy. The trigger was also not as good as I had read about.
Fast forward. After 2000 shot cycles and careful adjustments to the trigger it is an entirely different gun. As in way better. The trigger is light and crisp and the shot cycle is a short and quiet thunk and it is extremely accurate with H&N ftt in 5.53.
So another option might be to just put some more lead down the barrel and see how it develops.

Thank you so much for offering to give me $50 towards my tune kit , but I wouldn't feel right taking it. You're a very generous person though, an example to gta members.
-
Steve, I think everyone one here is top notch!
Jesse is right, it's a Chevy/Ford thing... I like them all ::)
Jim Maccari tune 'kits' are also very impressive. I have done several...and back when he did them, he did one on my 77k...very impressive. I only mentioned the Vortek because it's the 'drop in' quick fix for the buzz. I have one for my 77k but I took it out... and haven't decided whether I like it over the Maccari tune. I like to tinker and I may never be totally satisfied.
It's truly a toss up and you'll be rid of the buzz whether you use tar or go with a sleeve ( milk jug or Vortek, or delrin ).
flip a coin and go for it.
and nothing beats a six or so tins downrange to smooth the whole thing out.
-
I just have my phone so quality may not be so great, I should shoot a video so you can hear the buzz
LOL....my R9s twanged "mightily" when straight from the box, however after a bore clean and a bit of break in they all would shoot 1/2"ish ctc groups at 30 yards with me sitting on a bucket resting the gun on cross sticks!
I do find twang to be annoying and I do prefer a certain tune level, so now I tune my R9s before even going through a break in procedure. I personally don't believe my tuning improves the accuracy very much...IF at all! My tuned R9 with home rolled oring sealed piston cap may be (IS) more consistent when shooting in varying atmospheric conditions and require less warm-up shots to stabilize the poi, however after the warm-up shot sequence the "factory twang mode" arrangement is just as accurate as my shooting skill level when sitting on a bucket resting the gun on cross sticks allows!
I've read those "tuner phrases" that are used to sell tunes, such as "more lineal shot cycle" and whatnot....but with my skill level such "sales pitches" are just that....."sales pitches"......and I really don't believe that most R9s NEED a tune if you can get past the twang/vibration! IMHO........it's probably better to spend the "tune money" on shooting more pellets if you can live with the twang!! :o
-
Break out the Banjo and get a little gig going on ... whats a little TWANG among friends ;D

finally got a video of the "buzz" turn up your sound

Mine did the same. I can hear it, but when I recorded it I could not hear it as well. A good lube tune will fix it right up if it is that annoying. ???
-
How does the trigger feel Steve???
-
i haven't adjusted it, not as light as your 98 , but but the best I've ever had on an AG
-
Well, 3 months-later, how is the twang? Update us please.
-
sorry, did that in another post. its vortek tuned now , no more buzz and very sweet.
-
Thanks, Did you do it?
-
it did not "drop" in lucky for me i did it at dockey454 's house and he knows what he's doing. i pretty much watched.

This is very true, in fact, nced tuned the twang out of mine, but he told me the above before he did it. Twang is annoying, but doesn't affect the already great accuracy of these guns. Congrats on your new rifle, they are the cream of the crop, even with the twang.
-
Twang happens after the pellets has left the barrel. But a kitted gun is nicer to shoot and in my mind shoots better.
After all the truth is what ever you believe to be true. For a long time it was true that the earth was flat and if you sailed far enough you would fall off. ;D

Sometimes confidence helps hitting the target, and if the twang gives you less confidence then accuracy might suffer. JMHO

Hey! I think I found an 18 second video of a HW95 shooting with the honk! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=lvTikHWRdNM) you describe at 11 seconds. Good shooting though.
