I just purchased a HW97K with a synthetic stock from a member here. I know it is a great rifle and it is already tuned. My question is about the synthetic stock. All of my good rifles (except my Condor) have wooden stocks. Should I pony up for a wooden stock down the road or should the synthetic be ok. The cheap rifles with synthetic stocks are really the pits. I am of the opinion guns should be shot, and if I get precise tool with a nice shot cycle it really shouldn't matter. I think the best thing about being synthetic will be it is harder to scratch up. Then again I do like the feel of wood next to my cheek.
I forgot I do have a Retay with a synthetic stock, but I haven't shot her in months and she is out on loan. :)

I took the synthetic thumbhole off of my 97K but it was due to not being able to get comfortable with it on the bench, as far as construction goes, it wasn't cheap feeling at all.
The grip angle wouldn't let me get a hold where the rifle didn't feel tippy on the bags, and I changed it out for a wood stock. The bottom of the pistol grip would drag on the bench if I was comfortable, so I would move my rear bag back and the rifle was sitting too high on the bag then and was too tippy to shoot accurately for my tastes.
The synthetic stock put my head in almost perfect position for sight picture alignment through a scope. That was using a Vortex Diamondback in Accushot medium rings.
Remove the butt pad on that synthetic stock and stuff the butt cavity with foam, an old sock, chicken feathers, peat moss, or whatever you have laying about and it will kill the little bit of resonance that the hollow butt has.

I've used Great Stuff for doors and windows (expands less than the original Great Stuff) inside synthetic buttstocks with good results. Just tape up the outside of the stock around where the recoil pad goes. Once it cures, use a razor knife to trim off any overflow, remove the tape and install the recoil pad.

No worries, the Synthetic stock is great. I love the looks of a thumb hole stock, but prefer the traditional. It is a great gun and much more than I expected.

Those two rifles look so familiar!!! ;D
Glad you like them both. I enjoyed them over the years and may have to replace my 97 if I get to missing her too much. That was one fine rifle for sure.

I know the feeling well, but do not get one until after you tune my R11. I know you will tune the TX first, but after a full tune the R11 just might astonish you.
