Title: Mountain Wild Hog Hunt, Pictures & Videos
Post by: Nomadic Pirate on August 16, 2014, 08:24:05 PM
Couple of weeks back I went to scout a new valley, eventually I found a place I really liked and wipped up a quick blind to set up an Hambush.  ;D

Today I went back to check if there was enough activity to warrant a hunt on Wednesday, the moist grounds where easy to read and there's Hog Spoor everywhere.

On the way up to my spot sometimes you  can use game trails and sometimes you need to drop into the creek bed.

Than I got to my spot and it was really beat up.

It's an intersection of 5 trails.

Weather forecast for tomorrow is sunny with moderate trades in the 10-15 MPH range ( I prefer the slower trades rather than the hard gusty ones because before a gust the air gets sucked in the opposite direction so you have the winds consistently going in all directions )

The trades hit my blind from the 2 O'clock direction,
I'll bring some mangoes to throw at the intersection to see if I can stop or at lest slow down a passing Hog.

I'll be sitting from about noon to 7 PM if needed.

So everything is in place, now I need a good measure of Luck :) :) :)

I actually prefer to get a 80-100 pound-er Saw, Big Boars don't taste all that good,

Pressure will be about taking a video, so much going on and not much time so it's hard to remember to go through the process of getting the camera going :) :)

I was joking about the big hog.  ;D I know how it is. I hunt deer. It is very cool to kill a big tough 11 point buck like I did 8) but the younger bucks and does taste so much better.

Best case senario would be to have a Big trophy Boar coming in very early and take that down on video, than later in the evening a nice meat saw :) :)

Just did my final Zero check.

Gun is shooting fantastic, a super tight rugged hole for a full magazine at 32 yards,...so if anything goes wrong on the hunt the shooter will be the one to blame :)

Double checked my Packs too, everything is in place, ...I'm ready :)

looks like I will never get bored seating in that blind. I usually use a camo net hanging on branches. but, it is too cumbersome to stick a rifle through and get a sturdy rest . this year, I will build a blind for tree squirrels like that!  I remembered getting nothing when I learned to hunt tree squirrels first 3 years. I was not disappointed at all. just enjoyed being out there.  it is combination of hunting skills and marksmanship that brings success. you feel comfy and confidence seating in a good blind. good luck!

;D Sort of off topic but still applies when a youngster I would go "fishing" with my dad on Sunday mornings. We would go out on his 14 ft runabout and I would bait up my dad would do the same and then make himself comfortable . One day the fish were practically jumping into the boat for me , my dad was catching nothing . I asked the old man if he had checked the bait on his hook , his response was "I just love being out here with you and am perfectly content with that" , fish are optional!!!  ;D ;D ;D ;D

I also checked out your photo bucket page Manny.  As always I enjoy reading about your hunts and love seeing your see pictures. The two videos help place me along side you due to the perspective, and that moment of squeezing the trigger. I swear I could smell the jungle, and the pigs as they root around you. I hope to one day hike through the woods, set up a blind and hunt pigs with my Sumatra. You sir, are providing much encouragement.

Though I eat lots of meat, there is something so poignant and sobering watching an animal lose it's life. I greatly respect your serious approach and laser focus on the task at hand.

The other day I watched my wife take the life of the rooster that made into our latest batch of hens. It was essential to protect our right to keep our flock and that rooster had to go. While we are allowed hens in city limits we are not allowed roosters. I had already started to grow attached to this beautiful creature, and so we did no happy dance as he did his last dance in the killing cone.  Killing a creature that will end up on the dinner table in one form or another keeps things in prospective.  You show us good example. Thank you.

Last weekend I smoked up 17 pounds of Pork Shoulder. I took about 12 pounds of that to work to share with my co-workers, and kept the rest for home.  I will celebrate your hunt this morning by enjoying a plate of this pork and imagining it came from a mango and guava fed piggy that you harvested!

Thank you!

Steveoh

Attached image of three piggy shoulders almost ready to eat in celebration of your hunt!

OK, Here we go My friend is still trying to download video 1 when he's finished i'll put it on.

So, I got to my blind around 12:30 and the day before I had soaked 2 ziplocks full of corn in fresh squished mangoes, I spread that corn at the intersection.

I had my Storm .357 with EPP/UG

(http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d124/NorthShoreLB/Heidy/DSCF0228_zps425e4776.jpg) (http://s34.photobucket.com/user/NorthShoreLB/media/Heidy/DSCF0228_zps425e4776.jpg.html)

by 2 PM a young boar and sow come trotting down from the trail at my 11 O'clock, good thing I spread that corn because otherwise they would have kept on going never to be see again :)

When I 1st put the camera on them I wasn't intending to shoot but than I figured it could be my one an only chance.

I'll put that video here when it's avaiable..................

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bk0wwcojwk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bk0wwcojwk)

Here the young Boar

(http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d124/NorthShoreLB/Heidy/DSCF0229_zpsd3f743da.jpg) (http://s34.photobucket.com/user/NorthShoreLB/media/Heidy/DSCF0229_zpsd3f743da.jpg.html)

At this point I wasn't ready to give up a hunt, it was way to early, I'm used to sit all day in blinds like that.

about an Hour later an other sow came in but I had no intention of shooting her, I just watched has she ate, having a smaller hog eating peacefully might bring in a big hog that is hanging back.

sure enough this nice boar come charging down the slope from my 3 Oclock, displaced the sow and started eating, this time I had all intentions to shoot :)

At this point the hunt at the blind was over, but Hunting wasn't :)

after a Packed up i set out for my favorite type of hunting, slow quiet stalking,...the combination of soft ground, big boulders on the river bed and my favorite stalking shoes, the All Star Converse made for virtual silent going.

eventually I got to a spot that I had hogs all around me on both banks in the tall grass.

Once I got in the mist of them they started to freak out, but they didn't know where I was, just that something was very wrong, in the excitment I forgot to turn the camera on, than I remembered, you can see a hog poking his head, if he gave me one more second I would have taken the shot, later you see him again running away off to the right, few seconds after I turned the camera off a good sized one exploded out the tall grass behind me at took off down the river bed

WOW! You are the man! Good shooting, awesome scenery! Thank you so much for "taking us along" on your hunt.

I really enjoyed your reaction to the dropping of the large hog. Or should I say the lack thereof? I see these professional hunters hootin' and hollerin' after they drop an animal and you didn't do that. It's all calm, collected focus with you. I like it!

I've gotten a lot of complains over the years because I look so serious in my Trophy pictures, to be Honest, I just don't feel like jumping up and down and smile when I just killed something.

I absolutely can't stand those Hunting shows where they do that,...JMO

the Adrenaline was running pretty good when I shot that Boar,
just the fact that came charging down like that and the shot was taken pretty quickly, I was still in a full adrenaline rush at that moment :)

Very sportsman like of you.  It's good to keep in mind that it's not a video game, it's a real living thing that just breathed its last.  Of course it is going to a better place...the freezer.  LOL

How big were they?  they look like good eating size.

It's good to keep in mind that it's not a video game, it's a real living thing that just breathed its last.

I think people (especially my generation) have lost the perception of this concept. The popular video games now (Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, etc) show killing, not animals but humans, as a "normal" and "exciting" thing. Personally, when I kill an animal, even something as detrimental and annoying as a starling, I take a second to slow down and respect the animal. Every one of those 171 sparrows I've popped have had a small moment of silence for them.

I'm now playing with your mount, the camcorder I just got has the screw set to far right so I had to hammer the bracket to the side.

Next time the video quality should be much improved :) :)

Awesome! Yeah we put the plate on there tight but we do make it moveable with some force for just such a reason, although its usually point-and-shoot cameras that have that issue. For my reference, what make and model camcorder did you get?

That .357 really puts them down. I am watching the videos through my phone and it doesn't let me do full screen on photobucket. What is that substance that flies out from around the hogs head during the shot? Is that the pellet/bullet going through the skull and kicking up dirt or is that slobber or food from the hog's mouth?

Yes we can take them year round.

Good catch there on mosquitoes, ...they are brutal, the Shamagh I always wear insn't so much for camo but for keeping the Mozzies away.

The video is almost uploaded on YouTube, I should post it soon

Outstanding Manny!
Your patience while getting good footage before shooting was professional grade Sir.

You are officially the first person to take any game with Bobs scaled down 80 grain EPP/UG slug ;)

Keep em coming! I'm too busy to hunt let alone go shoot my AG's. I'm living vicariously through you...

I will have to wait until I get a bottom pour...it takes too long with too many rejects hand casting.

I still have over 30 pounds of pure lead for casting so you're in luck there...but I'm ordering swaging tooling for .358" before I buy a new furnace.
I've been waiting for the new Lyman Pro Mag 25 to actually be available...

My swaged .358" will knock the socks off of those slugs I sent you ;)

If my tooling is WAAAAY out I will set aside a day to make you some. I'll PM you when they're ready.

Several people have successfully taken larger game animals with heavy .25 and .357 high power AG's Manny has been using both calibers with great success. but if you ask nicely he has a thread where he dissects a boars head after a kill and shows best shot placement for the best humane results he is the best resource for  wild boar hunting and shot placement.

I would strive for 50 fpe on impact and perfect shot placement

That big hog that Bullfrog shot at 64 yards was with my 45gr S/HP @ 80 ft lbs at the muzzle (900 fps) - the slug was doing 804 fps for 64.7 ft lbs @ Impact.
Bullfrog reported about 3" of penetration but I think it went low and missed the open cell portion of the skull and penetrated some solid bone.

Not stealing your thunder Manny, its the only one I have hard data on.

All my Storms at the moment are set up with the factory power spring, the only one with the weaker spring now is the Blizzard on duty for backyard pest extermination and I'm shooting the H&N Baracuda Hollowpoint 18gr out of it.

Epic hunt bro. How much power is required to drop a big hog at that kinda range?

I've dropped several real Big Hogs with my .22s and .25s shooting in the 55-60 FPE range.

I try to stay in the 30 yards average,...most of the time that's all you get here for distance :) :)

the .357 at 130 FPE sure gives added confidence,
but I had no trubbles  with the perfectly placed shot dropping them with my Small Bores :)

At what velocity will you be shooting them. On another note, I'm still recovering from my back surgery. Looks like it'll be another 4 weeks before I get the green light.

Heal up there Tony, we want you to go out and shoot them guns :)

She's shooting those Benjis in the 950-970 fps range,...Will sent me the numbers, but off course I lost the paper and definitly those things aren't something that I make much of an effort in remembering :) :)

Ballpark is good for me ;)
