Title: Who uses hand pump with their Marauder?
Post by: deucelee on July 31, 2014, 12:03:44 AM
PyramidAir is having a sick sale on their MRod .22.  $525 shipped for the combo setup with a extra carriage, scope, rings, 500 pellets.  Seems like a SICK deal, but it ends tomorrow.

I already have a Discovery with the hand pump.  Just wondering if who uses the hand pump with a hand pump and what's their experience pumping up the MRod? I plan to take 20 shots (vs the 32 that it's rated for) and refill.  How much of a pain is it to pump from 2,200 to 2,800psi? (I'm just guessing)

Again, the sale ends tomorrow.  Thoughts?

Not too bad I was using a Hill Pump just got tired of pumping  and went the freedom 8 route after 5 or 6 months of pumping

PS: I do a lot of target shooting in my basement and backyard average 150 to 200 shots per session 3 to 5 times a week

I use a hill to pump my at44 at about the same pressure range you're wanting. It isn't too bad only about 45 strokes. My Hill pump is alot easier to compress than my old Benjamin pump though.

Just do it, pumping is not so bad. I pump my BT65.

I am using a Hill pump as well. The gun is a first generation .177 Marauder. I fill to 3000 PSI and shoot down to 2400 PSI for 40 good shots averaging about 910 fps with JSB Exact Heavy 10.34gr. It currently takes a predictable 38 strokes on the Hill to fill up. That's about 3 minutes or so. I usually load my mags after pumping to give me a little time to bring the heart rate down before shooting. I do not find the work to be a problem and I manage to shoot whole tins of pellets on the weekends.

I use the Benji pump on the .25 from 2000 psi back up to 3000 psi. I keep forgetting to count how many strokes as I am usually thinking of other things when pumping LOL!

Its not bad, just let the pump cool down during your fill cycle as it get hot quick.

No problem for me.
I hand pump my Mrod to 2500lb, Disco to 2000lb and occasionally my Talon to 3000lb with my Air Force pump.
I don't shoot hundreds of rounds a day.
Just sniping shots at pests.
I'm a 68 year old retired couch potato and am never in a hurry.
A compressor would be a total waste of $$$ for me.
Just do it...

I used to pump up my Mrod all the time and it really wasn't to bad.  I would shoot 30 or 40 pellets then get  out the pump and top off the gun, not bad at all.  I just went slow and easy.  I use my shoebox setup now to fill my carbon fiber tanks for my shooting, but I still kept my pumps as backup and still use them once in a while just to keep them lubed and working.

I use a pump on mine.I dont plink with that gun at all ,strictly a hunter so shots aren't frequent enough for pumping to be an issue

I use a g4 pump on mine sometimes, when I want to conserve air in my 90ci tank. I even pumped my 909s up a couple times.

It's not hard to do at all - I run mine from 3000psi to 2000psi, so its a full 60 strokes or so. It is a lot faster to shoot it down than to fill it up, but it's not bad.

Pumping a marauder is a piece of cake (I have some buddies in their 50's pumping like there is not tomorrow, lol), that's a pretty good deal in my opinion.
Have fun

awesome. thanks for your replies.  Question tho.

I wonder if your Hill pumps are significantly better than my Crossman (i think it's 3 stage) pump.  It takes me 50 pumps to go from 1,100 to 1,900 on my discovery.  I wonder if that'll mean it's going to take about the same to go from 2,100 to 2,900 ??? or because it's a much higher psi (an extra 1,000 difference), that the effort and number of pumps will be much more?

or is it that the number of pumps will still be 50, but the effort will just be a LOT higher?

much thanks!!!

I pumped for about 1 month.  I was spending more time pumping my .25 than shooting. I also had the benjamin pump that I think I had to rebuild once a week.  I now use a 120 CF steel scuba bottle and have not looked back since.  It is nice to know that I have the pump as a back up if I ever need it.  I like the idea of the pump but I wold spend 30 minutes filing my gun 10 minutes letting my heart rate come back down then empty 2 or 3 mags and start all over again, it got old fast.  Now I have a 3k regulated SCBA tank adapter on my tank and I can just run my guns tethered if I want and shoot for days.

I got my M-Rod and a Benji hand pump from Pyramid Air.
Yeah, that first fill can be a sun-o-gun up to 3000PSI!
I break it up by doing 40-50 pumps, then stop, load a magazine with pellets, then pump again.
After my first few times out with the M-Rod, I generally dont shoot it below 2000psi but fill again.  Keeps the FPS up, and less time pumping.  From the 3000 to 2000psi I can get about 4 10rnd mags in.  If I go all the way down to 1000psi, I can get about 60 shots in.  But you can tell the FPS start to drop off.

Edit:  I have heard of people having probs with the Benji pump.  I have not had a issue yet.  But the way I do the pumping, by taking breaks, may have something to do with that.
Hindsight though, I should of got a Hill pump.  I understand they are easy to rebuild.

I did ONE TIME!  Decided to make an air tank a priority.  I'm 69 yrs old and in good shape.  I would pump during commercials while watching TV.  The pumping didn't bother me it was the time involved as opposed the time it takes to empty the tank.  I Do use the pump on my FD PCP as it is low pressure and doesn't take much time.  I also have used it on my DISCO and the pack tube thingies on my 2260 (I forget what it is called).  HIPACK?

I first filled with my Scuba tank, then found the "improved BLT tune" that uses only a 2500 PSI fill. It gives you three mags with an ending pressure of 1500 PSI, since finding that tune, I use the hand pump most of the time to refill from 1500 to 2500. I have a bad back, and this doesn't hurt me. So I would say go for it. I like many others started with the Benji pump to fill 13 cu.in. HPA bottles, then I bought a Talon SS. That was what made me get a Scuba tank, that Talon bottle roughly 500 cc was a beast to fill back up to 3K. Oh forgot to mention my M-Rod is a 25 cal. Hope this helps your decision.

That is awesome!!! I'm 48 but only weigh in the 150's (Thyroid issue). I tried leaning into a pump for a friends .25 Mrod and couldn't get it to budge. Not even one pump with my weight leaning down on the handle. I was close too the top of  a full fill, but still..... Disco or FDPCP for me if I can someday afford one.

ugh! The hill is 2x the cost of my Benji since i got it as a package deal.  Got the pump with the Discovery for $330 from amazon several months back.  I'll see if I want to sell the Benji pump and get the Hill.  That's almost the cost of my Disco/pump setup  :'(

I'm 170 and I have to push down on the pump handle with straight arms and pretty much pick my feet up for all my weight on the handle to pump the last pumps. My wife laughs at me, but it looks goofier than it feels. But that is from 2300 to 3000 psi on the M-rod.

FX 4 stage pump has the "lowering gear" making it easier to pump if you have issues. Personally I don't use that feature but do like the FX better than my Hill Mk3 which I ended up selling.

No tank for you rkr?

I'll see what happens with the Benji pump and the MRod.  If it's a PITA, i'll consider the FX or go with a tank.

A local Scuba joint has a 130CF, 3,500 PSI steel tank for $360.  Manufactured 06/13 and they charge $7 per fill.  Wonder how many fills will that give my MRod until it goes below 2,700 PSI.  Anyway to find out?  Decent deal?

I think maybe the condition of the pump will make it hard. Im 130 and I dont have a hard time at all pumping to 3k psi with my FD pump... If your pump is in good condition then I dont think you should have any problems.

That's a great place to find Scuba tanks, I got my first one from a local guy who had sold off his air guns, and the tank wasn't even a year old when I bought it from him. Tank cost me $100.00 It's an 80 Cu.Ft. cylinder, so I get lots of fills. I picked up an older one the same size for $35.00 from a diver who just got tired of the issues traveling with them by air. Said it was easier for him to just rent from the shop or dive group where ever he traveled to for is dives.

I found this older related topic.

I own a Hill hand pump. From doing my research, I wanted the most efficient pump to fill my air rifle and that was easy to rebuild if it stopped working. Some also compared the Hill MK3 and the FX pumps. The Hill pump had less strokes to fill the same air rifle.
http://www.gunmart.net/accessories_review/hills_v_fx_pumps/ (http://www.gunmart.net/accessories_review/hills_v_fx_pumps/)
I am only 130 pounds. I have no problem filling my S200 from 120 to 190 Bar (55 pumps) and my AR20FT from 80 to 210 Bar (150 pumps).
I usually take a break every 50-60 pumps and use a fan to cool the pump. Applying a small amount of silicone grease makes the pump smoother to operate if it starts getting rough.
