Title: reflex or dot on a 2289?
Post by: tomykay12 on July 04, 2014, 03:08:51 PM
Anyone put a reflex or dot sight on their backpacker, and what do you think? I just bought  a backpacker from a fine forum member here, and it came with a mim sight. Well, the mim is WAY too close to my eyes, and the gap is much too big for the front sight. I'll put that on a pistol where it belongs, and thought of trying a reflex, or dot sight, combined with a TKO thing to tame the bark. Any suggestions? thanks, tk

Just depends on how precise you wanna be.  The dots aren't the best for precision. There's some low power shotgun scopes that you can look at locally in the box stores.
Here's a little liteweight shorty, that I like.  I've used the 3-9x unit for years...it's the same...just fixed power:

I like the Millett SP-1. It is a good value at its price point. I've had several- two of which were mounted on carbine builds. Dot sights have unlimited eye relief which makes them useful on many types of airguns. Unlike scopes that magnify your natural wobble making it difficult to hold on target, dot sights are non-magnifying and easier and faster to use in many circumstances. Top level bullseye and silhouette shooters use dot sights. Once you learn how to use them, they can be very accurate.

Reflex sights are going to be much more compact than the red dot sights.  Unlimited eye relief and precision are going to be essentially the same in the two sights; the smaller dot size you can get, the more precision.  Overall, in my opinion, it pretty much boils down to what size optic you want on your gun.  I prefer the reflex sights.

Well, I had an older Walther dot mounted on a 1377 steel breech gun, so I swapped. Much better on both counts. The mim sight seems well made, and mates very well with the 1377 front sight thickness. I may pick up a reflex, but the dot is good, and actually quite accurate enough for this application. tk

On my powder burners, as well as my modded 2240, I found that switching from iron sights to an optic, either a red dot or a reflex, improved my accuracy.  Aging eyes and all that.

I've not played with a reflex sight but I'm quite happy with my UTG CIRCLE dot site on one of my 2289g guns. I also have a UTG target dot sight on a second 2289g. It's just a dot and it's not as clear or defined at any illumination level as the circle dot version. The basic target dot works, but it's often more a pair of dots offset from each other and overlapping at an angle, one lighter then the other and sometimes irritates me because it's not as precise. I have to figure out which one of the dots I sighted with.

I much prefer the circle dot reticle. It's clear and works great for me every time.
Note this does require using dovetail to weaver rail adapters to mount it.

Do you wear glasses, particularly bifocals?  It seems to me that when the "double dot phenomenon" occurs, it is often a result of looking through the wrong part of my glasses and changing the section through which I am looking and/or changing the angle results in the second dot disappearing.

I had the same problem with all of my dot sights to varying degrees - flaring, multiple lobes, ghosting, etc. I worked around it for a long time. Then, one day, I was shooting open sights with an EyePal aperture affixed to my shooting glasses and picked up a pistol with a dot sight. Wow. Crystal clear dot. That told me that the problem was my eyes, not the dot.

Had an eye exam today and brought in one of my pistols. Sure enough, the dot came into focus with a little magnification (@.25-.50) and a slight astigmatism correction. Got to hold the pistol in front of that mechanism the doc uses to flip all those various lenses into place. I now have an option for prescription shooting glasses should I choose to spend the money. Otherwise, the EyePal apertures work really well. The downside to the apertures is the reduction in the amount of light cpof the sight picture and getting those things stuck into the perfect position on my shooting glasses.

So, anyone who does not see a perfect dot should have their eyes checked.

Wow what a revelation! So I wear 1.5 readers most of the time when reading or working on things close up, but not when I shoot. Never occurred to me it was my eyes or to try wearing something with magnification! I do need to get them checked. Talk about a head slapper. Thanks!
