I am a graduate student studying wildlife biology in Fairbanks Alaska. My advisor is very interested in darting coyotes and lynx for radio collar recovery. We usually know where the animals are within a few hundred yards at any given time, so calling them in and darting them would be far more effective than what we have been doing (setting up a dozen traps in the area and praying). Since I own a .25 airforce condor, I
I have seen custom airforce condor guns in many calibers, and I am curious what it would take to set up a smoothbore 50cal barrel. I'm assuming it would involve a custom breech and barrel bushings, however I am unsure if the factory hammer spring and tophat would work. The barrel would not have to be anything more precise than a half inch ID piece of stainless pipe, provided I had a machinist make it perfectly straight.
Are there any custom airforce builders who could point me in the right direction?
Thank you!

First thing I can think of is that 3000 psi would be a tad overkill.... Many commercial dart guns use CO2 or are pumpers.... http://shop.pneudart.com/air-activated/ (http://shop.pneudart.com/air-activated/)
Perhaps running regulated HPA, maybe even just a paintball tank at 850 psi would fill the bill?....

Don't the Condor's have a power wheel that can be set to some pretty low settings?

Not low enough.
CO2 is a better option, but honestly once you pay for the fastconversion ($400+) it's easier and more cost effective to buy a purpose built dart gun.

Why can't he just underfill the condor?
Would that not be like a regulator set at a low psi, for the first shot anyway?

He would only get 1 shot, then a pressure drop requiring a refill.... unless he spent a lot of time tuning specifically for that situation.... I believe you can get a kit to run a Condor on CO2, but I agree a purpose built dart gun like in that link may be cheaper....
