Title: Unsolicited Fusion review
Post by: Ribbonstone on July 03, 2014, 09:26:01 PM
The truth about the Fusion (at least as I see it):

BAD STUFF:

1. Sold as a “package deaL’ that includes a 4X non AO scope that I’d as soon shoot at as shoot with.

Am not a “scope snob”, all I need  is clear optics that don’t look like I’m looking though 3 feet of water. The best description of the freebie scope: crappy.

Replaced the issue scope with a real “cheapie”. 2-7X “Winchester” AO scope for $ 38 (BTW: the $30 4X has also worked great for me).

http://www.amazon.com/Winchester-Daisy-Outdoor-Products-Scope/dp/B002QB02EK/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1404430441&sr=1-1&keywords=2-7+winchester+scope (http://www.amazon.com/Winchester-Daisy-Outdoor-Products-Scope/dp/B002QB02EK/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1404430441&sr=1-1&keywords=2-7+winchester+scope)

Would have MUCH DESIRED to buy the gun without the scope for less $; is a case (and not the only one) were the package deal includes something you’ll  eventually want to throw away.

2. Automatic safety is a cluster.  Works as a safety, but it hoses the trigger adjustment.  Delt with in a previous post, it can be tamed.

3. Trigger housing, core of the front end cap,  and barrel band are plastic (they may be pot metal on the XS60C, but at least they are metal).  So the trigger unit has some “spring” in it.

4. Pierceing cap leaked. Problem was traced to a bit of flasing on the seam of this plastic part, which wouldn’t let the end cap screw down far enough to cover the gas tube’s vent hole.  Fixed that easy enough.

5. LDC works well, but it does look like a big gray-black-dill-pickle stuck on the barrel.  They just had to cast the plastic in segments, like some kind of skinny WWII pineapple grenade.

Unlike a lot of buyers, not really interested in power (it’s a game that CO2 just can’t win  against PCP’s). Am interested in two things with tis rifle:

1. Shot count over 50 shots per fill (and that would be 50 shots before detectable velocity drop)
2. Accuracy.

So I did 8 things to the rifle:

1. fixed the piercing end cap by removing the plastic flashing that kept if from sealing.

2. Plugged 2 of the 3 transfer port holes:

3. Adusted the striker spring tension to its minimum (backed out the striker spring screw untilo it locked back, then turned it in Ľ turn).  LDC is not removable, so the crown  is still unseen.

4. Polished the barrel loading port and lead in to the rifleing.

5. Cleaned the barrel.

6. tossed the “gimmie” scope and put on the $37 cheapie.

7. Tested every pellet on hand. JSB 7.3’s and JSB 10.1’s came out ahead.

8. Adjusted the trigger location to the FRONT (to shorten striker stroke). It’s not much, something close to 1/8”.

Ended up with an 8 foot pound (X 55 shot) co2 rifle that looks like this:

And shoots like this at short (20yard) range:

So I’m kind of half-hearted about the gun. Shoots well, but for the same $197 (add in the scope I had to buy to replace the “gimmie” scope):
1. They could have included either a better scope or no scope.
2. A bit of creative tuning is going to be envolved.

I have only one question:  How do you like the Winchester scope?  I saw it at Academy and thought it might do for the .22 LR I plink with.  But it was so well packaged, one could not look through it to get an idea of the view.

Have been using a $30 (with rings) 4X32AO for a few years.  tried to kill it by using it on an RWS34 for a couple of years.  It lived.  Put it on a little 2240 HiPac 2240 conversion where it seems just about right.  I like lower power/wide field of view when  the critters are likely to flitter off  quickly (so it's shoot now or don't shoot at all).

Only been using the 2-7X on the Fusion for a few weeks. No problems. Clear, adjustments work as they are suppose to, and it doesn't show anything to make me worry.
