Title: AA S400 MPR FT Came In!!!!
Post by: Rdsail on May 29, 2014, 04:10:42 PM
I ordered it from Precision Airgun And Supplies. It came in yesterday. I have to say it is a beautiful gun. The blueing is flawless. The stock is poplar but it looks great, Like if it was walnut.

A few pictures. I took them with my phone so they are not the greatest.

Now for the mods:

Last night I took the trigger apart and polished all the components. Added a guide for the trigger weight spring and cutter the spring some. Adjusted to my liking but I'll fine tune once I start shooting. Sorry no pictures

I made a wind indicator that attaches to the air tube. I used aluminum tubing from lowes.

I'm waiting for the scope rings to come in. I'll be using a Mueller 8-32x44. This scope's glass is extremely clear. I have an elevation knob with it. I'll have to do the tape with all the click for the different distances.

I designed a scope wheel for it It will be 3D printed. I found a local place to printed for me for $40. The places online wanted $50-$80.

If you want look at it in more detail click here http://shpws.me/tvGq (http://shpws.me/tvGq)

Once The scope rings come in I'll zero it and tune it to shot JSB 8.44 around 780-800fps. That will keep it right under 12lbs.

Items that are coming: But pad extensions, Palm Rest, Sports match rings with elevation adjustment and tons of pellets.

I can honestly say that I was seriously looking at that rifle this morning on PAs site. Planning the next rifle already, which would be a AA, after my 'first and only pcp' that hasnt even arrived yet.  ;)
That thing is beautiful! Pictures on a website can give you an idea of how nice something is, but your pics put it in a whole new light.
Congrats and have fun with that.

Dpnt know if you've ever shoty through a Mueller 8-32, but with the 30mm tube, they are a brute up on top.

The above was a post I made a while back about printing nice looking custom tapes

You are clearly CAD saavy, so if you want to make a nice looking scope tape it should be easy for you.  I have had great luck with these, even when they have gotten wet.

I have taken a beating over giving this advice once before......but I'll try again.

I set my scope sidewheel AO tapes up to read out in turret adjustment numbers......not yardages.  This works absolutely perfect with the Mueller.  Yardages require you to then reference another chart, or make a new turret knob with markings as well.  You can see my master drawing which has yardages.....which were then translated to turret settings to make the final tape.

It's nice to not have to carry a yardage card, or mount one on your rifle.

Folks told me this was a bad idea because if you change your velocity, then you also have to change the tape.  I have one pellet that works the best in my rifle.....and I never change the velocity, so that worry that others' had never came to fruition for me.

Mike

Micheal. Great idea.  I think I'm going to follow you on that one. I made the wheel wide enought to put all that Info. I was going to try to avoids using the scope know and this is the perfect solution.

As fAr as changing the tape it is very easy. I have made some on my disco for my hawke 8x32x56. I print the on label paper and the add packing take on it

Very handsome rifle. I just bought a Mueller 8-32 myself and am pretty happy with it. I've only used it for 200 or so shots, but so far I like it. I'm testing it on a .25 Marauder with LW barrel for possible use in the Extreme BR later this year.

I took some shots through the crony. This gun does not shot well but it shots like a regulated gun. I'm using JSB 8.4s the first few shots I took were around 745 fpes. I adjusted the power adjuster ½ turn out and it landed right around 785 average. I proceeded to take 25 shots through the chrony.

Low: 784
high: 793
average: 787
ES: 9
SD: 2-3 between shots

Just want to mention that this is in stock form. you can see how the fps increase very slowly. Once I get the scope I'll run a full string and see how full curve.

I'm just happy as I can be.

I few more pictures with the scope I also moved the wind indicator to the air stripper. I was worried it was going to scratch the air tube. I was going to zero the scope at 25yards but the weather in not cooperating.

The scope height ended up being 1.9 inches.

Additions: Sports Match Adjustable mounts, butt pads spacers, and Palm Rest. The only thing left is going to be the scope wheel which should print over the weekend.

Very nice FT rig! I have a couple of questions about the palm rest. Is it from Rowan Engineering? How easy is it to hold the rifle stock with the palm rest in place? I assume there will be times you may not want to hold the rest. I am on the fence about putting one on my AA s200.

One final question about the scope wheel. Did you consider an elliptical or comma-style wheel? On my MTC Viper scope, 30-50 yards is a bunched up in less than 1/4 turn of my AO. I am always looking for ways to make it easier to resolve yardages in that distance range.
Title: Re: AA S400 MPR FT Came In!!!!
Post by: Rdsail on May 30, 2014, 07:02:52 PM
the palm rest is the AA one. I am considering getting a rowan air stripper for it.

for the wheel, I worked on some ellipticals, I just did not like the look of them. The wheel I made is 125mm which should be enough. I make my scope tapes buy with vector programs so I can have a lot of detail for markings.

Hope that helps

Today I zeroed the scope at 25 yards. It makes amazing groups effortlessly. Stacking the pellets.

I have some numbers to show of:

the string I took was of 110 shots although the tables I'll shot later only show 100 shots. My spread sheet maxes at 100.

The numbers for the 110 shot string where:
Fill: 2800-1560
Number of shots: 110
Average FPE: 785
high: 795
low: 759
ES: 36 (4.5%)

Now Here is the analysis of of the first 100 shots.

Based on the numbers, I will shot from 2600 psi (180bar) down to to 1850 (125 bar) This will give me 70 shots under 2% spread

Wow, very nice! What reticle does your scope have?

My Mueller has 8-32x has a mildot reticle, I wish it were a little finer. Here are a couple of groups using the scope on a .25 Marauder at 25 yards:

Come on guys 25 yds is not a test for those rifles lol. Let the rifles stretch their legs and take them out to 50- 75 yds . Love to see the results

My AA is a FT gun and being set up for FT. 25 yards is the zero. At this point I'm just starting with my setup. I will only stretch out to 55 yards due to Field target. The mrod that is on my signature will shot MOA to 1.5 MOA at 100 yards and the disco will shot under moa at 70 yards. In my home range I can only shot up to 40 yards. I wish I could shot my mrod and my Custom disco 50 plus yard more often.

Now that is what I am talking about lol. Your mrod is great at 100 and the disco is also at 70. My AT44 10 shoots about half inch at 50 and my disco comes close and that is with crosman wal mart pellets.

I check all the distances on the scope wheel and I was a little off specially in the farther ends of the focus. I made adjustments and now a right on. New picture.

I also got my new case for this gun. The middle layer gets cut out for a perfect fit. Plano All weather.

Now I just need to wait for the side wheel. I was able to shoot 40 yards today and the accuracy is right on. It is more accurate than my custom disco when the wind does not blow the pellet.

And if you can notice. I made the spacers not the palm rest longer. I need the extra height when shooting from seating position.

What about the knob itself?

18.1gr JSB
880 FPS MV
25 yard zero
My scope is identical to yours Mueller Tactical 8-32x44 side focus

it is not that easy. When i did mine I had had to fine tune it some before not all the click where right on. Also, you need to get the knob and have actual diameter for the knob

New Knee/hamster finished and installed. It made of 3 pieces of oak. The two outer ones are .5 in and the middle one .25. I added 4 ½ x ⅛ steel rods in the inside for weight.

This is a lot more comfortable than the AA one. and it balances the gun better.

I think I did a fairly good job matching the wood stain.

I just go the Sidewheel from the 3D printer. It looks great and it is very light. I'm putting a couple of coats of poly on it to make it smoother for the tape. I added 4 set screws to keep it centered.

It end up being $84 shipped. but if I were to do it again. I would just doit in white and spray painted black. The the cost would go down about $10.

Thanks for sharing!

The only groups I have shot at that distance is when I was rechecking my click at 55 its was an easy .25in  with a 8-10mph cross wind. I'm very impressed with how this gun shots. It is just easy. my range only allows me to shot to 40 yards. I'm shooting JSB 8.4s exclusively. I tried them first and it is the only pellet I have tested. They grouped so well that I did not bother to test any other pellet.

I'm also practicing for FT so I have hardly shot from a bench on the longer ranges.

nice shooting! thanks for getting back to me so quick it looks like precision airguns has them in stock so the wait isn't too crazy. the other videos i've seen online show that the gun really likes those jsb 8.4's as well.

Good luck with the FT Practice and soon competitions.!

Update for the Air Stripper:

I got to zero again after replacing the air stripper. The POI changed but 1/2in to left and 1/2in low. I adjusted the elevation with the sports match rings and then proceed it to get it zeroed. I had set the spacing of the tripper to 4.5x1.7 per Dougs (PakProtector) advise. That was right on. I can't say it is exactly that distance but close enough. I tried different spacing and groups opened up some but not significantly.

The gun is a little bit louder.

here are some groups from 40 yards. I picked the best ones. There was some wind about 5 mph on and off. I ran the all of the them through the crony and I was shotting a little slow for my clicking. I adjusted it to 795 average with a high of 799 and low of 783 thought about 60 shots I took.

6 shots. the one of the top left was the first shot. completely my fault. Or better, I blame the mosquitos around my head

5 more shots.

I'm finally all set. I have checked my scope tape and click tape and they are right on from 10-40 yards. I need to go somewhere where I can shoot farther. I'm limited at my house.

I did get a bum bag and filled it with poly pellets (bean bag filler). I got it from walmart last night. I gives a more stable sitting platform than regular outdoor pillows which is what I was using before. I got the bareto size.

I got the bum bag from a company in Spain. Great quality and they can customize it for each person. I kept it simple.

Went to the mail box today and the latest addition was waiting for me. Rowan Air Stripper. Beautiful work from Rowan!!!

How long did it take to get the air stripper from England?
Very nice gear for FT shooting!

Looks awesome. I wish I had the cash for a really nice scope. :-) Have you notice any accuracy difference with the air stripper on the gun?

The accuracy is better. The gun was extremely accurate from the begging. All you can see is the groups getting a little tighter. you can see how groups open up when I adjust the stripper.

Nice images!

These rifles seem to be on the list of great kept secrets. You don't see much about them as far as posts go. YouTube doesn't have much either. However, imo they are very very nice for the price point and accurate as can be. Lately, I have been shooting flies with mine. :)

I completely agree with with. I actually wish I could find more information on them. This is the first gun I did not completely take apart and tuned it. the only thing I took apart was the trigger. I polished it and modded the weight spring some but that was it.

The AA MPR is a wonderful rifle -- simple and very accurate. I bought mine from Bori at Top Gun when they first come out, which was in 10m configuration.  As Bori advised me, I modded mine from 6 fpe to 13-14fpe by simply shimming the hammer spring and opening up the strangle screw.  The differences between the 10m and FT versions seem to be the larger air reservoir and a stronger hammer spring.

I'm getting numbers very similar to yours, except for 60-70 shots rather than 100+.

These rifles continue to show up at BR competitions and place well.

I like the Mueller 8-32x 44 scope. I decided to buy one as well but with the mil-dot crosshairs. It was very reasonable price.

Just wondering about your assessment of the mil dot reticle and if you would like to compare it to other reticles. I have hard that they are on the thick side

I took a low resolution photo of the Mueller mil-dot crosshairs on 32x at a monument 1.2 miles away. I think the mil-dots are ok.
I prefer mil-dots for range estimation and hold off for wind.

One update: I have a Robert Lane Regulator coming in the next couple of weeks. I had him set it up at 120bar. I have read that most people set them around 90bar but I'm trying something different. Per my efficiency calculations. the MPR at 90 bar is inefficient with the use of the air. and also it is not as accurate once you drop bellow 100 bar. At 120bar each shot will consumes about 10-11psi where at 100 it uses almost 15psi per shot. This translates to 110 shots at 120 bar and 100 at 90. I know the physics will change some with the regulator so It would not be to hard to turn down if it does work out per my theory.

Next is a group I shot from 40 yards. This is 6 shots. The firth shot was a little off the group so I took an extra one. I was checking my zero. When I'm shooting from sitting position I was hitting left. This group shoes that it is me pulling and not the gun.

If I count the off the groups shot I get .230 group CTC and if I don't count it I get 0.128 in CTC

Not bad at all

Rdsail,
I am planning on ordering the 3D printed side wheel you designed. How is the side wheel attached to the Mueller side focus knob? Is it friction fit?

It has 2 attachments. 1 I added 3 set screws on the boddy of the know. I put electrical tape not to scratch it. 2.- you have to unscrew the side screw on the knob. You have to use pliers. I bought a 4m screw. To replace the original screw.

Thanks a bunch! Saves me time from 3D modeling one from scratch. Just ordered the 3D printed side wheel. I assume the screw is metric M4.

I installed the Regulator. This are preliminary. I will be running full a full string tomorrow. The installation took about 1 hour. It was easy.

Here are some numbers:

I filled up to 2800-2900psi. I was not measuring carefully. I took 30 consecutive shots. I'm using JSB 8.44

High 798
Low 792
Spread: 6fps
average: 796

This puts my right under 12fpe.
The number are very good I just had to adjust the power about ⅛ of a turn.

To say the least I'm very happy.

I'll post a full string starting at 3000 psi down to the regulated pressure which should be 120bar or 1740psi
base on calculations that should give me roughly 114 shots base on 11psi per shot. My guess is that it will be closer to 100. Usually the efficacy goes down some with a regulator. This is an increase of 40 shots.

Title: Re: AA S400 MPR FT Came In!!!!
Post by: Rdsail on August 16, 2014, 01:39:17 PM
I finally got to run a full string. It took me a while because I had a leak through the breath hole.

The are positives and negatives about the regulator.

Positive:
Extreme spread got cut in half
Standard deviation is about the same

Negative:
efficiency went down

----------

The shot count is about the same. Although if I consider the same spread I gain about 10 to 15 shots. But then I'm off the regulated pressure of 120bar.

Robert lane sent me recommendations but I would have to make the hammer lighter which I'm not willing to do at this point

---------

After doing this test I adjusted the internal power adjustor. This adds tension to the poppet spring letting less air out. I adjusted it so that the there air flow adjuster is almost fully open. This removed 1 turn in the choke. It I just use it to fine tune the power. I ran a short sting and there was a small improvement in air used per shot. It when from 17.5 psi per shot to about 16. The spread seamed to be reduced by about 1 fps or so. this would gain me animal amount of shots. 76 instead of 70 based on this shot string.

---------

Conclusion: It is had to say if the regulator was worth it. The gun performed very well stock.

The nice thing with the regulators is that you don't have that sweet spot.  The one thing I didn't like was driving that breather hole.

I also installed a RL reg set at 95bar in my MPR FT and adjusted valve spring preload set to 5.5lbs and ports opened to 3.7mm.  Using the stock hammer my air usage was 14.5psi/shot at 12fpe with air metering screw at about 2 turns out.  Then I installed the anti bounce hammer sold by RL.  Air usage went down to 12.5 psi/shot with 130 shots from 200->95bar.  Air metering screw all the way open.  I think i can improve efficiency some more by shortening the hammer spring, increasing valve spring preload and trimming the antibounce hammer to get the power back up (see pic).

very cool. The main reason that I wanted to keep the regulator at 120 is that for some reason the gun seam to be more accurate at the pressure. When I went under 110 my groups opened up some. RL make some recommendations similar to what you are saying. For now I'm going to keep it at this setting. Seam to be very accurate and I'm getting 70 solid shots.

After a lot of research on trying to find a butt hook for my MPR I finally ordered one yesterday. I even considered making a set up to attach to my stock one. The problem I found was the cost of material and the work I need it to do. I don't have a mill which I would of need it.

I compared costs and features on the available hook on the marked. It all came down to the Competition Shooter Butt Hook.

One feather that I like is that you can buy multiple bases and easily switch it between different rifles. The number of adjustments is impressive.

I'll post once I install it. I'm guessing it will take about 2 weeks to get here.

I'll have to get counter sink. I can't remember if they are 4m or 5m screws. I had to get new ones before to extend the butt on mine. I have the countersinks to go on my drill press. I should be an easy task, just measure and drill. I'm guessing I will still need to add spacers for proper fitting.

That has been my thinking. I'll just repair my current stock and shoot the rifle as is. I am not putting anymore money into it. I'll use the "upgrade" money for a Steyr, FX or maybe an FTP900... I must say the cracked stock on a $1200 gun is pushing me to another manufacture... Yes I am butt hurt... lol

I have to say I would not get rid of  my mpr for a FX or even the ftp900 but maybe for a styer. Mine shoots so accurately and consistent that replacing it would be hard.
