Title: Daisy 901, Do I need to tape barrel?
Post by: DavidS on May 27, 2014, 11:03:06 AM
As accurate as My Daisy 901 was at first I did not bother with taping the barrel.

Though now it seems that the point of aim vs point of impact is wondering by about 0.23 inches at 25 yards (with a scope and bench rest).   Do I need to tape the barrel, or is it something else?

Have you cleaned the barrel lately?

I would do that before I start dismantling.

Some guns need cleaning in 200 rounds or less, some less often.

Just like people..

Some like a bath daily, some only on Saturday.(unfortunately)....

@45Brovo:
I had not thought about that as a possibility.  I just cleaned it about 1000 shots ago, and befor that another 2500 shots.    I will try cleaning it and see if that resolves the issue.

Humpfh! Some people just think they're better than everyone else. Taking a bath every week! What's the world coming to?

Cleaned the barrel.   No better.

So the original questions stands.

Still trying to exhaust possibilities before tearing into it.
Is it the same tin of pellets?(some times you have to re sight in when changing tins)
And are all the screws tight?
And also, have you chronoed the gun, to see if you are keeping consistent velocity shot to shot?

If the answer to the first two is yes, then I would tape it, and any other mods you want to do at the same time.

Guns are strange, my daisy 953 used to love crosman premier hollowpoints from the tin.

Then one day in mid tin, it started throwing 3 distinct groups, 1 group 1/2 inch high at 20 yards, one group dead on, and another 1/2 inch low, and it stacks the pellets in each group, and it throws the pellets into those groups at random.

I tried another tin, same thing, tried another tin I had bought while in chattanooga. To make sure it wasn't just the batch of tins from my local Walmart.

With JSB pellets it stacks them, just like it always has.

So it isn't a problem with the rifle.
It just changed its taste...

It is consistant at 768FPS with Winchester Domes 9.8 Grains.   I have already modifyed it for power.      The only thing I have not done is tape the barrel.    I have tryed a couple of pellets just to be sure.

The gun is shooting 0.23 inch groups at 25 yards, that is terible for a Daisy MSP.   It was keeping it under 0.20 inches before.   This is rested with a scope of course (I am not that good of a shot off hand).

I think you just need to step away and try it again tomorrow.

Dude, if you have a $63 multi pump daisy that shoots .2 sized groups with $6 for 500 pellets that are .177 in diameter, and it is horrible because it opened up by 3 HUNDREDTHS of an inch.

It us still one hole...

Be happy with that.

Let us know when it opens up to 2 inches at 25 yards, like some other $60~ish rifles..

Now if it was a $4000+Whiscombe that opened up, I would be complaining...

It may be a $63 rifle, though it is a Daisy and Daisy's are extremely acurate.

Now if it were a Crosman I would be happy with that.

Ok I will leave it be for now.

I,am not hating on Daisy, I have a 953 that with the right pellets is a one hole gun at 15-20 yards.

If I want to get someone hooked on airguns I hand them the 953 with either a scope or red dot, depending on their target.

One pump, self indexing 5 shot clip, and a lifetime of fun...
