So i've got this little TF58 contender, a beautifully sized gun, side cocker, .177. A nice little gun i got for about $60.00 a year or two ago. It never shot accurately no matter what pellet i tried so it sat most of the time. Last week i got mad at it and chopped the barrel off :) I ground a crown out as best i could and jb pasted everything smooth. Accuracy remained about the same(30yrds2"+) although i'll say that it lightened it up nicely. I'finally ran a chrony on it and found a 30fps varience that probably explains a lot. I've never torn down a springer before but i figure this one is a good canidate. Is this a fairly easy gun to tear down and is it worth a rebuild? What supplier would you folks reccomend as the best one for my required replacement parts? Thanks guys..J

Its a nice looking rifle and I have an affinity for side cockers. Were she mine, I would certainly tear her down and re-build her. You can do it, you have the technology, you can make her better than before. Well, at least it sounded good. In the GTA library, there is an explanation on how to tune a Fast Deer that should be close to what you have. There is also a section on how to make a leather seal if you need one. If you get stumped, just make a post and we will chime in with some help.

Thanks Fisherdude, i'll see what i can do to her and if i have any trouble i'll sure post. Jeff

Now i gotta make that spring compressor... 8)

Jonny if you decide to tear into that sweet looking rifle be sure to post lots of pics and keep us informed.

Thanks lampy, i sure will. I'm going to have to take pics so i can remember how to put the thing back together probably lol ;D
I'll definitely document as i go and try to make a good thread out of it. Thanks for the post.. Jeff

i would love to see a "docoumentery" of the internals of that beauty! also, while your in it, hit the barrel with JB bore paste. you would be surprised what it'l do.

I will Big Block, i'll make a "docoumentery" of it as best i can. I have to say i've already jb pasted the heck out of this barrel... great stuff that jb is,, but if it helped accuracy and consistency i couldn't tell. Maybe if i go all out with this gun, it will become the faux R7 i've been wanting so badly. I want to reshape the stock and maybe a colored stain(no not red :)) green maybe. I don't want to go to far with it to find out it still isn't accurate though. The new seal and spring is worthwhile to find out if that the culprit. J

Sure looks better with the short barrel.

i like that , that is a fine looking ag. thanks david

I like that "compact" style. I have chopped several barrels to make the AGs easier to handle.
Looks good. How does it shoot now?

lol Hey Bogey... like &^^& :)
Maybe 2 inch groups at 30 yards on a perfect day with its favorite pellet. But there will still be fliers. Those fliers are undoubtably a byproduct of the variance in velocity. I gotta get working on the spring compressor.
Very light handy little gun though. Its gonna be nice :) J

I love them carbines..:)

LOL ;D Gene, judging by all the pics you show of all your beautiful guns.... i'd say you love em all!! ;)
That one is beautiful too btw. Jeff

Question for JohnnyReb. Before you took the rifle out of storage, how many pellets have you put in her. Most barrels need to be seasonned before accuracy improves and groups start to shrink. I'd put at least 1500 rounds through her and if things don't improve then I'd put the JB paste to the barrel. Another hint from I got from MM,.... If your rifle has a leather seal, it's best to avoid useing moly around the seal. Moly and leather really don't work well together. I would guess a complete cleaning and de-burring will improve the rifle a lot. For the trigger, just a slight smoothing of the contact areas usually proves sufficiant. Leather seals are great and best of all a lot more forgiving than synthetic seals. Rough them up a bit and a good soaking in kneats foot oil, silicone oil, a mix of both or whatever. There are many leather oiling recipes out there. But most important is a spring compressor, and taking your time. And while your at it,.... Have fun!!!! Good Luck, tjk

Hey tjk, thanks for the advice. You may really be dead right about this, i kept shooting the gun after i'd posted the above comments as well as tried some different pellets. Something changed along the way, the trigger got better and the fliers started to become less common. When i ran the first of the superdomes through it i was amazed to see my fliers become almost nonexistent, the gun started to group beautifully. I've got a little 6x bugbuster on it now and the gun is as light and handy as an airgun could ever be. It'll put 5 shots in a fairly tiny hole at 25 yards if i do my job and of all the guns i've sold or traded off recently to support my pcp(air) habit, it's one i'm not even considering. It's my "R7" and the reason i'll never have to drop $400.00 on the german version. I just ordered the sling swivel studs to install and i'll be finished with it, so long as the accuracy and power doesn't change i'm not going to tear into it, i'll just leave well enough alone. J

Oh man... now I want one of those little shooters!

Hi..
Heres one a carbine Kral..CFX copy...
12" barrel...If yer had never seen one
yer would know it had been hacked at...

I have an old TF41 sidelever that's been tucked away in a dark corner for a couple of years. After seeing your carbine-ized Chinese sidelever I'm thinking I may have found another project. Hmmmm......
