Title: My chrony is giving HIGH readings!
Post by: nced on May 06, 2014, 09:31:03 PM
My chrony read HIGH
This past Saturday I shot a field target match at the THAGC club in Mt. Pleasant, NC and found that where my chrony was reading CPLs @ 840fps, the chrony at the match said that I was only shooting CPLs at 805 from my .177 R9! LOL......no wonder the gun cocked so easy and the shot cycle was so nice! At the match I did well considering the shooting conditions (some wind, and a few brown targets with brown paddles set  in deep shade), and the "aiming marks" on my AO were still valid so the gun has been shooting at that tune level for a while! LOL.....no wonder my mid-range pellet rise seemed so much higher than I was used to with my gun shooting at the usual 890fps!

When I got home from the match I checked out my couple decade old F1 chrony and sure enough, the rear screws that secured the sensor were loose and the bracket that secured the front sensor was loose. I tightened up the screws and bracket and sure enough, where the chrony was reading CPLs at 840fps before the screw tightening, it was reading at 820 after the tightening. That still leaves a discrepancy of 20 fps vs the chrony at the match, but it's at least within hand shaking distance now! When I get to the WV property next week I'll compare the readings with my brothers' F1!

The rear sensor has taken a few "glancing blows" over the years so PERHAPS this has something to do with the readings!

Notice how far away from the front metal the sensor was prior to the bracket tightening. After the bracket tightening there is about 1/2 as much foam rubber showing between the sensor and the metal "display frame".

Lighting being natural or synthetic, direct overhead or from front, back, sides , Sky screens on / off, Cloudy or clear sky ALL seem to cast slight shadows over the sensors and will give close tho differing readings has been my experience with the Beta.

Ed,
I once had a piece of lead stuck in one of the sensors in mine. It must've fallen in there from the thousands of shots in the duct seal behind it, pieces fly out sometimes.
I simply turned it over one day it the pellet chunk fell out and the Chrony started working again.

to me it seems the pro crony is a lot better the  chrony. pro chrony is one piece. I owned both and the one that folds up will cause errors

Makes sense! I've been thinking of scaring up a few coin for the ProChrony and actually looked at the web site today!

HI Ed, If you decide on the Pro Chrono Digital check around for price. Midway USA periodically offers them
for ~$100. I suggest that if you want to use it indoors, purchase the InfraRed light kit for it also. My experience,
and that of some others, is that the cheap, stick-on, LED lights produce light in a part of the spectrum that the
sensors are not sensitive to. The sensors work best with infrared lights or light from an incandescent source.
It's a great chrony and I think you will like it.
