Title: Pellets sticking in the bore on my 953.
Post by: 45Bravo on May 06, 2014, 03:18:46 PM
My nephew and I did a lot of shooting this weekend, he wanted to learn the new $15 daisy 880 from Craigslist.
And I just wanted to burn some lead..

I had bought a tin of 750 of the gamo tomahawk pellets (7.9gr.)
The both daisy rifles (the 880 and the 953) shoot them reasonably well, not as good as the JSB's but good enough for backyard spinner plinking out to 20 yards.

I have had the occasional crosman premier hp from the tin, stick in the bore, and pumping it again, would not shoot it out, but easy to push out with a slender wood dowel, and they stick close to the muzzle.

In shooting the gamo's, I had 4 out of about 100 stick in the bore, but near the breach end, and again, no pumping would make it shoot the pellet out.
But they pushed out easily with the dowel.

I have not had any issues with the JSB pellets sticking..

This was Saturday when they stuck.
Sunday I shot the rifle over the chrony with the JSB pellets and turned in 498-503 FPS for 20 shots.
So it is still consistent, so it has to be the pellets being over sized..

The daisy 880 had no issues with the gamo pellets, but it has significantly more power than the 953, and probably not as tight of a bore.

Any ideas guys?

You pretty much answered your own question with your observations...congrats.
Steer clear of the CPHPs tins if you want consistency.  The daisy 953 is designed for 10m competition shooting, so they conform to lower fps and they use lighter weight wadcutter pellets for targets.   The JSB pellets are much softer so they won't jam easily. Squeeze them both and you'll see.
EDIT:  If you don't wanna shoot wadcutters...
There was a domed pellet that I tried and were undersize for me, but they may work for you.  They were Winchester branded and were lighter than 7.9g.   They were inexpensive and pretty good looking, but too small for me.  Just thought I'd throw it out there since you're searching for "that" pellet.   Also look at the JSB EXPRESS, rather than the EXACTS.

Not sure if this will solve the sticking problem.  But before getting a chrony lubing the pellets in a 953 seemed to shoot smoother in this low powered airgun.
