Title: .25 at fifty question
Post by: smartshooter on April 29, 2014, 10:34:18 AM
I'm really wanting to be good at this whole airgun thing  and I saved up a bunch of money over the past six months and bought me one of the new quite energy hatsan galations in .25. I went with it due to good reviews on hatsans accuracy and it was affordable,  would buck the wind, and would have some punch to it if I took it hunting... Well I've spent hours and hours shooting it and trying to get it to shoot like I always dreamed it would. It shoots good and it took time but I'm finally getting it to group with 3 shot groups at thirty yards like .45 .5 .575 etc... I won't lie I'm happy but not supper happy I really would like to shoot .5 groups at fifty but I don't know if that's going to happen....

I know there are many of you that get sub .5 groups at fifty but do any of you do it with a .25? The pellet itself is .25 and therefore unless you thread those suckers through the same hole at fifty it really easy to go over the .5 mark, really easy! Is it realistic to get the half inch group at fifty with this gun (take the shooter out of the equation) and this pellet?

Thanks for letting me know your thoughts?

sure its possible if you eliminate all the variables.  But at 50 yards you're talkin a ton of variables and your talking about pellet weight differences thermals and wind. If your hunting and can nail paper squirrels at 50 every time than I would say your doing the best you can in an outdoor environment.

Also, what pellets are you shooting?  Your gun may not have shot anything it likes yet.  Plus your gun is still 'new', going to take a bit for it to break in.  Did you clean your barrel, too?

I've cleaned the barrel and the only pellet I've shot through it are the JSB kings 25.39 grain (about 700 shots) I was watching some rick eustler videos on YouTube and with the 25 marauder (and I know he's a crack shot with lots of time behind the trigger) but he did two 5 shot groups .5 or less at fifty.  Oh well something to strive for. I would like to compete with you guys at the 30 meter comp here on the forum but I've seen your scores and right now I feel like the gun shooter combo I have would just be a joke.

Anyways any other thoughts on  .5" groups at fifty with a 25 cal?

In my opinion anything under 1 inch at 50 yds is pretty good, and is a kill shot on most things.

Having a good solid rest is crucial.

I have a .25 cal Marauder and the JSB King 25.39 gr is not my most accurate pellet, the benjamin domes work better for me at 50 yds, and for under 35 yds the predator polymags are by far my most accurate pellet.

Experiment with different pellets it could make a big difference.

Half inch groups at 50 yards is time to join the 1 MOA club shooting!  That is no easy feat with wind blowing light pellets around.  I wouldn't let that discourage you from joining in the 30 yard GTA match.  Granted, there are some phenomenal shooters in that group, but keep them inside 3 MOA, and you'll still be scoring in the 180's.  Go for it!

50 yards with a good pcp and well matched pellet is a lot easier than people make it to be  :D You have a good pcp there but keep trying different pellets! As much as you can!

50 yards-easy and is the general area for a good zero once you find the pellet.
75 yards and up-harder, challenging and fun

Don't let some folks rain on your parade!

Sorry if this is obvious, but when people report groups, they are generally talking about center to center.  This is measured by taking the full group size, and subtracting the caliber.

For .25 caliber, a 0.75" group edge to edge would correspond to a 0.5" group.

Sounds good guys, thanks for all your thoughts. I'm still shooting and feel (most of the time at least ) that I'm getting better. I've printed some 30 m targets off of the gta and am going to practice, tune, practice tune I also ordered two other kinds of pellets one lighter h&n target 20 grain and the benjamin domes 27 g we will see how they fly!!!

Thanks again
