Title: What's your screen name?
Post by: Baltim0re28 on April 28, 2014, 11:53:01 AM
As I cruise through here, there is a wide variety of screen names. Most have some relation to air guns or shooting in general. Just wanted to start a thread to see how you came up with your screen name and the meaning behind it. (If you don't mind telling)

Mine is a screen name I started on other sites a few years back. I just carried it along and used it on multiple sites because it was easy to remember that way. I am from Baltimore and I was 28 years old when I created it.

I'm old and I generally hit what I aim at.
Hence, Old Dead Eye.
I also go by "Certified Slacker" on other sites.(Not airgun related)
Since I retired 10 years ago, I decided to quit being overly concerned if things get done in a timely manner.  Slacking off.
My wife certified me.
Hence, Certified Slacker.
Gotta keep things in perspective...

Back when having a computer in the home was a new thing, we got one. My wife is a school teacher and the computer was intended to make things quicker and easier for that purpose. But I got on it from time to time just to play and surf the web for things interesting to me. Many of the sites I visited required a screen name. I tried several gun/hunting/archery related names only to find that they were already taken. So I changed my name finding quest to include fishing related stuff. My favorite fishing reel is the Ambassadeur 5500 C. That name has been with me since way back then.

I'm a nut case :) I'm a dang good shot ( if I can say that ) and I love hunting yotes, but as a child/young man we had wild packs of domesticated dogs in are area that we would shoot anytime you saw one

Mine comes from a combination of things. Ez (ezman - D Ez) are the nicknames I have had for years, taken from my last name. And the 604 was my barracks number while in South East Asia back in the 70's in the USAF. It holds a lot of significance to me....and anyone else that served there at the same time.

Even though my name is Joe, Jonnnyboy is an old college nickname I somehow picked up along the way.  When I joined the GTA many years ago (it seems) it was just natural to retrieve the old nickname and put it to good use.

My avatar has always been of someone that I enjoyed and even admired.  Don Knotts was one of the greatest situational comedic actors of my generation and as a youth, another of my nicknames was Barney from my affection for Barney Fife.  I have also used an avatar of Clint Eastwood as the gunfighting preacher from Pale Rider, a movie for which I have an affinity.

The choices of screen-names and avatars are interesting as they often reflect the moods, thoughts and ideologies of those who choose them.  Of course, often as not, they are just chosen at random.  LOL!

;D My screen name and avatar are easy I have ridden many brand and styles of motorcycle over the last 50 years and when I bought the Harley FX Springer it allowed me to incorporate two passions for the price of one. In this case riding and tinkering , I still ride just not as much as I did 15 years ago. Also rediscovered Air Guns another 2 for 1 hobby Shooting and tinkering ;) ;D

When my university started on-site e-mail service, they assigned usernames to everyone based on the first four letters of their last name and the first four letters of their first name.  Thus, I became farrlarr.  Since I have never found that username anywhere else, I use it for pretty much everything.  As QVTom indicated, it is pretty hard for me to forget my username and if I ever do, it is time for the boneyard.

It is interesting to see how people came up with their GTA usernames.

Here is my story.  Way back when my email account was Harry@prodigy.com (since '89).  I was working for Prodigy at the time, and when I left the company a few years later they deleted my free email account.  A few weeks later I decided to sign up with them for a paid ISP account, and naturally that email was taken by someone else.  I was kind of ticked off so I signed up as Only1Harry@prodigy.com.

Not only that I used to have Harry@yahoo.com in '93-94 I think it was.  I was one of the first few hundred people probably to sign up when Yahoo started out.  Well I was using my Prodigy email account so much that I hardly used the Yahoo one.  Back then after 6 months (or a year) of inactivity Yahoo would remove your email account.  Servers back then where not as powerful and storage not as big or cheap as today, so ISP's and other Providers would do cleanup often.  So I lost that account with my first name as well around 1995.  I have been using only1harry for usernames since, because I had 2 Harry@.... email accounts early on, and somehow I wanted to show there was only 1 original Harry with 2 email accounts from the beginning of the Internet (and email) explosion.  And of course there is only "one" of me :)

I was the secretary for the local A.B.A.T.E. chapter when it was active almost twenty years ago.  My wife produced a newsletter called "Roadworthy".  The chapter has since folded, but I pilfered the name.  When a site requires a username that's the one I use.  The old group, by the way, was A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments, though the more "politically correct" definition for the acronym has become for some American Bikers Aimed Toward Education.  Take your pick.

Post by: bubba zanetti on April 28, 2014, 04:13:22 PM
Gee, where do I begin?

ummmm well I was six years old and watched the movie Mad Max behind my Mom's back and that film left a heavy impression on me. In short I loved the motorcycles the gang members rode and the bike The MFP Officer "The Goose" rode. Most were Kawasaki Z1000's but Jonny the Boy is on a Z900. That movie made me want a motorcycle so bad I could taste it.

Anyway, I shot trap, small bore rife and air rifle through out my college and high school years as it was my first real passion in life. When I graduated college I moved to the DC metro area and shooting competition in that area was a rich mans game. So my dreams of shooting at Camp Perry (that as my ultimate goal) were pretty dashed on the money I made at the time. I was still a Mad Max fan and realized all the bikes around me and that I could get into motorcycles. Little did I know I was going to have a very, very blessed experience riding on two wheels for a time. So when the internet forum thing was getting started I had a 1997 Honda VFR750 at the time and joined VFRWorld under the name Bubba Zanetti. For those of you who don't know or remember, Bubba Zanetti was the second in command of the bad motorcycle gang. I always thought he was an intriguing character in the film and for his intrigue Max gives him some buckshot to the chest LOL!

The motorcycling thing is on hold, but I have had to give up the style of riding I was doing these past 5 years. Simply put it had become a bit of idolatry for me and I need to lay it down, possibly for good but time will tell. I have a street bike I have been restoring and a road race bike that will be for sale most likely. I will also probably walk away from being a MSF Coach too.

What's been nice is my passion for shooting has returned in a big and wonderful way. I really love shooting AG's. I spent 2 hours fiddling with the .25 Marauder yesterday and had my wife take some shots too. She's a total hippy and hates guns but loves shooting  ??? Yes, she gets the irony LOL! I did not think I would like shooting again like I did in my younger days been its been awesome! I feel blessed.

That's the short version.

BZ

Title: Re: What's your screen name?
Post by: Bicycleman on April 28, 2014, 05:47:51 PM
In 1949, my father and mother gave bicycles to my older sister and me. (Schwinns)  I rode that bicycle until I graduated from High School in 1961.  That started a love affair that continues to this day.  Several bicycles have followed.

My favorite hunting spot is close enough to bicycle to and from, and I have done it many times.  I would sling the rifle, ride to the woods, hunt, sling the rifle, and ride home.  Now that my area has more traffic, it has become increasingly hazardous to ride before daylight; so I truck the bike to the park across the road from the sugar cane fields and ride to the woods from there.  Much safer!!

The name, "Bicycleman" was not being used, so it seemed like a natural.  The bicycle is definitely part of my air gun experiences.

In this area, some of the charter services offer a fishing/hunting trip called "Cast and Blast".  Sort of a take off from that, last season, I authored a thread called "Bike and Blast".  http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=54165.0;topic (http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=54165.0;topic) seen  In it, I shared hunting experiences from the 2013-14 Louisiana Hunting Season.

Be watching for a new thread when the spring season starts this Saturday (May 3).  Mike (aka "Bicycleman")

Some interesting stories behind the nicks some of you guys have, thanks for sharing them.
Mine, Funnyrunner, was originally assigned to me as my radio call sign as the battalion forward observer for the 4.2" mortar platoon when I was in Germany back in the mid-70's. It came out of the Signal Operating Instructions (SOI) the first time we went out on a NATO exercise and, even though new call signs were issued with each new SOI, that one always stuck with me.

Nothing really interesting behind mine either. Fifteen years ago I was wanting a new handle to leave the old, childish one behind and 'monophonic' was the second thing that sprung to mind. The first thing was, thankfully, taken as it wasn't much better than the old one. Since then I've used it everywhere and haven't yet found it unavailable. Except once, but even then trying old passwords I found out it was my old account I had forgotten all about. ;D

When I was still in high school I got into paintball fairly heavy.  Well I have always liked to shoot, so I took on the role of sniper.  Well every good sniper needs a ghillie suit, so I made 3 of them.  Durring a game with friends from school a group of seniors saw us and grabbed their gear and challenged us to a game.  Well me and my two buddies donned my ghillies and set about.  For a few hours we destroyed the seniors, and they were never really able to find us and get any kind of shots on us.  When we were about half done and taking a break for lunch and what not, one of the guys commented that we looked like wookies from Star Wars.  Though in his words, " they are not cool enough to be wookies, so they are woogies!"  The name really stuck through high school and college.

Then when I sarted to do my airsoft stuff the name again stuck when I had 7 ghillies and a big load of money in all that stuff.  All the forums people knew me as woogie or woogie_man so figured I would keep it as people already knew me as that.

Mine comes from a time before personal computers. We were pretty heavy into a board game called Dungeons & Dragons. In the game, to gain any respect, you had to be born in. The higher the status of your "parents" , the better you start. My "Mother" Was a Wiccan Princess named AvaGwendolyn and my "Father" was a Master Mage named By-tor. Hence Avator, a silver haired Paladin. When the PC entered we moved the board game to the computer. My screen name was Avator and my avatar was a silver haired Paladin. I forget more about the game than I remember but the nic stuck and I use it for everything computer related. There are people who only know me as Ava. A lot of people think it's connected to aviation and ask if I fly planes. Yes, names are quite interesting.

I worked midnights for more than half my career.  I retired and then shortly thereafter got the golden ticket, day shift with weekends and holidays off.  I lost the golden ticket, but still enjoy seeing the sun.

My avatar is from the best show to be on television.  I wish Mayberry really existed and some days I'm Barney and some days I'm Andy.  The avatar photo was the most respectful photograph I had ever seen of Deputy Fife and that's the way I like it.  Respect everyone until they don't deserve it anymore.  I like everyone until I don't.

I acquired mine a long time ago. From the time I was 13, my summers were spent almost entirely in the woods. I only came home when there were things that required my presence, or, I ran out of toilet paper. When I'd come through the door, my dad would always say " here comes old long hunter". He called me that till the day he died.

When i was 8, we moved from upstate N.Y. to middle of nowhere N.C.. Was hard for me to fit in as southern prejedice against the "Yanks" was still pretty strong. Did the best i could and after awhile made some friend who spent all their time either hunting, fishing, riding horses and later dirt bike...by 16 it was jacked up 4 wheel drives. One of my buddies had a 79 Chevy that had been lifted 6" at least..he'd often fly 2 big rebel flags off the back, 3'x4' probably. Couldn't miss it. Dad was home one evening as we pulled down the driveway from a weekend camping trip, when i hopped out he said " well, Johnnyreb came marching home" or something to that effect. I was kinda proud of that and never forgot it. Became my online name 10 or so years later when computers became common although i did mangle the spelling a bit as i was really a yankee and knew it  ;D

Wanted something different and this one ties to my other hobby/modding addition... which is cars. My current platform is a '07 Mustang GT convertible, which was preceded by a couple Harleys (Road Kings) and a '68 Chevy Nova SS. The "vert" is anything but stock as I installed a supercharger with only 4K miles on it along with a wide range of other "upgrades" :D

Coming into this hobby, I was unaware about the potential cost and even snickered at some of my first glances at PCP pricing. Now looking back, can't believe how much I have spent since Aug.  as I never thought it would come close to my other hobby.

My screen name came about by the fact I gold prospect as a hobby and while on the swift river one time I was sluicing and some people came down over the bank with a video camera. asked what I was doing and if I'd found any. I told them I was gold prospecting and showed them what I'd got(little over 1 gram) Later in the day at a store getting coffee I ran into them again and one of them called out"hey gold hunter!!" The man's name:  Tom Massey  of the GPAA.  The store owner started calling me  "the gold Hunter" and the name sort of just stuck! Periodical table symbol for gold is Au. The Little "a" because I missed the shift key when signing up to the forum. (nobody 's perfect, some of us less than others!!!)

I grew up near Cleveland Ohio, lived in Buchananan Co. Virginia working in the coal mines. 8 years in Connecticut, 7 years in Seattle, 10 years in Columbus , Ohio and now lower Alabama. My accent is so mixed, people have no idea where I'm from. Funny thing is, I tend to talk like who I am talking to. I don't even know I'm doing it. I sound nothing like the rest of my family. Matter of fact, when I visit them, they sound funny to me. The hardest thing about the whole thing is trying to remember if you want a soda, a pop, a coke, a neehi or a sodi pop. I usually ask for beer.

Good thread. The meaning of my user name is not actually what people here have likely believed due to my user name and the squirrel avatars I have used.

The first word is a descriptor as it's my nickname that my grandfather called me since I was a little kid. Why he ever started calling me that I don't know because I didn't kill squirrels or have them as a part of my life in any way. The nutter avatars are used since they are funny to me and they are the animals I was nicknamed from. The second word is another descriptor for me as it's also what I am, a killer. Unlike many sanitized men in our world today who have suppressed that part of their nature I'm familiar with my drive to kill and take dominion as my rightful place on earth being head predator over all animals.

Lightninrod: see my signature  ;).

Bought It new in May of 2001just before I turned 62. I use to run in driver's schools on a couple of road courses(Road Atlanta and Roebling Road[near Savannah]) in my highly modified 1991 Camaro Z281LE. Now I wanted to drag race for the first time on a 1/4 mile strip.

I added some external mods(street/race tuned chip, larger crank pulley for extra supercharger[factory stock] boost, cat-back from Magnaflow, cold ram air box, single blade throttle body, drive shaft loop, and traction bars.

Started out with 13 second ETs and then added 16" rear wheels with Mickey Thompson ET Streets drag slicks. Got down into the mid 12s which surprised several muscle cars ;D. I'd bring it up to 1500 rpms at the tree and then gently floor it to keep the rears from breaking loose. At WOT, the rears would spin then catch, running straight and true through the lights. The supercharger would scream like two Everglades(I was born in Miami, Florida) Panthers in a fight.

I drove it daily to work(with the stock rear wheels and tires on of course) until I retired in 2007.  Still have it runs and drives like it did new. Makes me ;D.
