Title: .20 or .25?
Post by: WHITEFANG on April 12, 2014, 05:35:06 PM
DARKSIDE has set in.
Got with ALLEN Z on a build for another pcp.
Either a Theobin rapid or a Daystate.
Caliber in question is the .20 or the bad .25.
Lets here from the DARKSIDE pros on my choices.
Open topic here. But another pcp is in the making.
Got a supply of air juice now so let the games begin.

Guess it depends on what you’re going to do with it.  If there really were an “all around” airgun, then none of us would have any excuse to own more than one.

Something short. sleek, light, smooth to creep though the woods with or something  bigger, wider, longer to sit stable on the bench bags and pound tiny clusters in targets?  Considering your two choices, looks like more of the 2nd and less of the first.

5mm pellet choices are getting slimmer as the popularity wanes.  CP’s are gone, but they were pretty much lot-dependent.  H&N FTT’s are a bit lite for most  high energy PCPs (11.4gr)  Baracudas are worth a try, but they haven’t impressed me yet.  JSB’s are pretty much the go-to pellet right now.

.25’s have a better outlook.  Although there are several complaints about current Crosman Domes and JSB’s are in short supply, the increased popularity of the .25 is in favor of increased pellet selection.

Another vote for the .25. It really is impressive and with today's PCP's able to launch them with ease at higher velocities, the trajectory argument has pretty much gone out the window. .25 will be more accurate in most any conditions, especially the longer distances. Also, a .25 hits with the same energy at 70 yards as a .22 fired at the same fps will have at the muzzle!

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Kindest regards,
Cliff

Squirrel, crow, and the like - no question - .25.  If you're going for house sparrows regularly, not so much.  The .25 made a believer out of me after I went from losing a few squirrels to losing zero.

+1 and then when you graduate to a 9mm, you ears begin to open as well.

When I fist shot a .25 MROD I said "WOW", then I shot a Talon Pistol .25 and I said "Poop", then I shot a 9mm and had to run to the bathroom to clean the stain. :)

Well, here is another for the 25 cal.; I have a Marauder 20 cal, and a 25. The 25 will retain its accuracy much further than the 20 in anything less than ideal conditions. Energy is a no-contest to the 25. Now a .224 boolit shooter will ignore conditions that would convince either pellet to deviate significantly from its intended path...:) and at energy levels that neither the 25 or the 20 can achieve with pellets.
cheers,
Douglas

Well I guess the .25 is the ticket.  Allen has told me he can set me up with a rapid with both barrels. .20 and .25 if want to spend the $$.
Review of the Daystate 60-80 fpe is tempting?
Thinking 60 fpe with the .25 rapid? Still super power.
Ah is this not fun. Got some of  the best users out there to spend my money.  LOL
THANKS

As the old fang has played with many .25s in springers. I have had and still have many. Yet I have got rid of the higher fps guns. The .25 as the .20, they have always had my wild interest.
Pcp in.25 is the ultimate gun in that caliber.  The .20 in the springer, I have proved TO BE  winners in ones magic  caliber.  A 48 .20 lw, a 460 .20 lw a B40 .20. And a 350 .20 lw. Barreled by me, the little not known airgunner.
Super power and accurate at a cost.  But the .25 in the pcp has the ultimate power range for the large caliber to shine.
Much time and money spent to re barrel to .20 lw. Yet surprising luck, great guns.
Not a pro and just the fang. But the pcp has always had a place for me. The WINDY CITY .22 just opened the doors.  Not a beginners choice on the money but in my eyes and eye opener. 100 yard shots with all in the scope view.  Yes the DARKSIDE is amazing.
Springer heart but pcp mind. Horsepower at a blink of the eye.  It's not cheating it's a fact! LOL
Why buy a 6 cylinder when you can afford a V8. Air now is not an objective. THE JUICE OF THE PCP.

Having just bought a .22 cal recently, I can tell you I now wished I had opted for the .25.  Guess that will be my next one for Christmas.

Yes I see the .25 coming. Allen Z rapid is in the making. The .20 is next.  After many .25 springers it is time for a .25 that has the true power along with effortless accuracy.
Freedom 8 from PA has been lost? The great Fedx has lost it? Just another day in the shipping world.
Monday if not found, another one will be shipped.lol
Yes a .25 is happening.
The WC in .22 is nothing to laugh at. 100 yards shoots with JSB 18.1 are great for bird kills. It to is going  for a re building.
DARKSIDE IS NOT CHEAP but here I am. Right in the middle of a NEW WORLD.

The .25 has changed my life! ;)  In fact, since I hate house sparrows enough to send the very best (JSB King), I find the best of both worlds is a .25 with high and low settings.  22 FPE for birds and 45 FPE for all else.  It works + the low setting is super quiet.

Diffident the .25 is a great caliber. Much stored energy down range.
My funds are coming together.and many springers are already gone. Total of 4 sold within a week. Not selling all of them but I have thinned down.
Hated to see the 460s go esp my .20 but they went like hotcakes.
I will have a .20 in the PCP after the .25 is finished. Got 3 .20 springers left. So they will do me for now.
Thanks all. What a life this is on the DARKSIDE!!

While the .20 will Dispatch any HOSP, the .25 will Obliterate the aforementioned HOSP. Close range hits usually result in pieces flying about. Really though, the .25 is more versatile... more pellets, arguably better (or at least developed more often). If Air isn't a concern there is no reason not to go with the .25.
