Is there something that can be used instead of buying spring tar? I know that pellgun oil is I think automatic transmision fluid if I am correct. Isn't spring tar just thick grease? could a thick grease be used in it's place I know don't use very much in the gun.

Spring tar is used as a damping agent not as a lubricant per-say.
Closest thing to tar in the open market grease world ( Tho not seen in years so I age myself here :o ) is what was once sold as something along the lines of SHORT FIBER wheel bearing grease
It had somewhat fibrous clingy stringy consistency.
As to need or even wanting TAR :P :P ... if spring guide is fairly close to springs I.D or a Nice firm fit YOU DO NOT WANT OR NEED IT !!
Tars are a mixed bag of gains and losses .... It changes consistency with temperature and directly effects how loose or tight gun shoots. Noise & vibration can be somewhat controlled using it ... but none & use of other proven alternative lubes on propper fitted guides given a choice IMO is better ;)

The purpose of the heavy tar is quieting spring twang. I eliminated it in my gun by polishing the ends of the spring. I then put a thin coat of Sta-Lube Disc Break and Bearing Grease along the spring. It has a stringy consistency. No more twang.

egad not short fiber...gah used that stuff back in the days of ball rather than tapered roller wheel bearing
disc brake rated greases are high temp at 3-5% moly...not bad mouthing, that's just what they are
hmmmm..making guides and other round things hs got me thinking about buying a small lathe...I have to do something with the cousin's kid's FuryII he's got about 500 through it and it sounds like a fat man riding a pogo stick...
