Title: Peep sight on IZH61?
Post by: popadave on July 23, 2010, 10:30:42 AM
I am thinking of trying this since I shoot better with a peep sight.

I've tried scoping this (yes I can get a scope on the short rail if I put both rings on the same side of the turret) BUT there is a definite rear-ward up slope on the place where the scope attaches.  It is no where near parallel to the barrel.  Thus I cannot get a scope to adjust high enough. I run out out of adjustment in the scope even with shimming the front ring up and the rear ring down!  I do not think the plastic can be bent down enough to be parallel or even have a moderate droop.  Besides the cocking rod is inside of it and that would have to bend too.

A red dot scope, two different ones have been tried, also cannot be brought into proper adjustment because of this slope.

Ditto with a laser.  The high one, made by Crosman, actually lights the top of the front sight even with max  upward adjustment.

So, do any of you think a Williams Peep FP-AG will work?  If not I can always use it on another rifle.  But it seems rather strange to put a $70++ sight on a $109 +/- air rifle.  Maybe the Mendoza which is back in stock at PA would work and not be as pricey at @29.99.

What do you think?

Sounds like you have a rifle w a bad receiver.
I have an old Tasco red-dot on my 60, and it works just fine.

I think the peep would work.
About the price of sights....I have a set of Gamo diopters on my Daisy 953 that cost more than the rifle.

I had a Daisy Avanti diopter on my 61, worked great once I modified the front sight.  The stock post didn't work very well, but I turned it into a poor mans aperture with some fine wire.  Didn't think much of the Avanti sight, but maybe I had a bad one.  Lots of back lash, and stiff operation in part of it's adjustment range.  The diopter sight from the target model QB 78 is better, and frequently shows up on the Classifieds.  Posting a WTB ad will probably net you several.  Both of these retail for around $70 IIRC.

For about twice the money, the Air Force diopter is a great piece.  Solid, well built, VERY precise adjustments, and the eye piece has the same thread as the high end match sights, so you could upgrade later if you wanted to.  LOTS of vertical adjustment, and you can even remove the sight from its mounting bracket and install it using a standard 1" scope ring.  BTW, I'm talking about just the rear sight here, I didn't like the matching AF front sight. Yeah, it's more expensive than the rifle, but I have scopes that cost as much or more than the rifles they're on, and not a Leupold in the bunch :-).

And it just occurred to me that I'm talking match style diopters and you were asking about peep sights.  I had one of the Mendoza sights for a short time, nice piece but not suitable for my application, so I sold it.  I've heard of people having issues with it not being able to go low enough.  Not sure if it would work on a 61 or not.  I was using mine at ranges of 20 yards or less, mostly 10M indoors, so the diopter was the way to go, much more precise than a peep.  Hope that helps.
