Post by: crosman999 on April 08, 2014, 03:14:17 AM
Ok guys, soooo many choices,so many builders.Im not really on a budget here but am looking to get a big bore rifle that I can use for anything from coyotes to a giant hog.Looking for something good and accurate out to 100yrds with reasonable shot count and most of all be rugged and reliable.Open to any ideas?? I have been looking at the XPs but not sure...HELP 8)

I would think that a powerful .357/9mm might be the best compromise for that range of game, taking into account your other criteria.... Smaller calibers will favour longer ranges and smaller animals, larger calibers the opposite.... Air use is pretty much proportional to FPE, which is ultimately proportional to caliber, when comparing similar pressures....

While some guys are happy with one powerful shot and a backup, it is quite possible to tune any big bore for a short, flat string, using much less air, and at nearly the same FPE level....

I agree that the .357 is a great hunting round in the right gun, and most available .357 guns are going to give You a decent advantage count-wise over a .45 or .50cal. As an example, my Career Fire 201s got 4 flat shots at high power and either 2 more "OK" ones at high or 4 more "Good" ones at medium. OR, another example is my untuned ShinSung Infinity, which box stock gets me 12 excellent shots at around 120FPE on a fill.

a .357 shooting the EPP/UG at 1000 fps for 4-5 shots would be one heck of a long range hunting gun.

maybe not "The Best" but a Tuned Recluse 500cc is a good start indeed

I realize the word "best"can mean something different to everyone.haha Im not to concerned about price due to the fact its for hunting and I will get lots of use out of it.I would like adjustable power and that was one reason I like the XP rifles, looking at the Extreme .308 as well.I would like something with at least 4 powerful shots or several more low power shots.100yrds would be the max it would be shooting but most likely closer to 60yrds.These will not be hogzilla's so the gun doesn't need over 300fpe or anything insane like that, want to kill the game not blow it up.hahaha Some of the Mr.Hollowpoint videos I have seen are just amazing to me,Airguns are POWERFUL 8)

I've been working with the extreme in .308 and I LOVE it.  Holds air, top quality, and it's accurate.

I'm looking for another backup gun and it might be another extreme!

Yup, it's pretty cool to tip over coyotes at 100 yards!

You can do that with Evanix platform although I don't know if anyone does such tunes commercially.

Saddle Mountain tunes are suppose to be good.

Im veering towards a Sam Yang Recluse 500cc Air Rifle or Extreme .308 that seems to be better quality and power. The only reason I like the Sam Yang is because I know its accurate, reliability is questionable though.

The Sam Yang needs the lawyer spring removed, then send it to Saddle Mountain (from what I heard). I love the accuracy of mine from 30 to 70 yards.

I have a ranger 45  and It is a awesome gun. I use it for deer hunting. I shot a doe at 95 yards back in December.
There is a two year waiting list. And yes it has 3 power levels. I hunt on high power And get 3 consistent shots with
The 4th is 3 inches  lower at 75 yards.

The only reason I said the Sam Yang's reliability was questionable was because I have learned the trigger needs work, the gun needs to be tuned and some of the internals need to be cleaned up.The gun is beautifully made and is accurate most importantly.I pretty much am looking for a gun that requires little to no work to make it "reliable" to my own standards.Thank you all for the great input here,as far as an XP I don't believe I could wait 2yrs..haha although Im sure its worth it. 8) The Extreme .308 posted by Fur-n-dirt is darn near exactly what I would want and sounds like a pretty mean hunting machine.
