Title: Under the Hood of the Benji Trail NP.22
Post by: gene_sc on July 23, 2010, 12:19:47 AM
So I am nuts.. I just had to see what the difference is between the Benji NP and the Crosman NPSS for my self.. As most of you know I did post a review on the Crosman NPSS "Under the hood of the Crosman NPSS". I bought a new Benji NP.22 from R&L Aigun supply. It arrived late this afternoon. I was eating early dinner and when I was done I opened the box and extracted the Benji NP.

Fit and finish very nice well balanced air gun with scope installed. The thumb hole slot fit me just about perfect. No problems there with my big meat hooks.) I really like the new scope mount system. No more worries about mounts moving on the rails.. I noticed that the trigger was Theoben but the blade was a solid casting and not pressed steel like other models. The metal work is good but do not expect anything like a Beeman, or Air Arms finish.. I am very impressed with this gun if it has been made in China. The cocking cycle was smooth and the trigger was heavy. Of course the inside of barrel had a gallon of gunk like the NPSS did. Took several patch's and GooGone to clean her up. .At least you do not have to worry about the barrels rusting...

So I then took off the stock and started to break her down. First thing I noticed was a very well made machined steel trigger block. Very impressive to me.. Once I had all the pieces on the bench and everything cleaned up and de-burred I then took a look at the piston and seal. The piston is again a solid machine piece of steel and not stamped steel. It is also a one piece affair and has thick walls. Heavier than the Gamo and other Crosman pistons. The seal was damaged as I see all the time. New gun and seal is nicked up all over the place from factory. First thing was to fit a seal. I check my seals and ended up using a Apex seal from JM. The piston is nicely machined inside and out.

Next was the compression chamber or tube. Once cleaned up I was amazed at what I saw. I did not notice this on the NPSS but this tube had the inside finished off with a reamer of some sort. That ads up to an improvement on overall bore tolerances. They have used a heavier metal it looks like. The scope mounting system and the tube were finished very well. The compression chamber and mount are all one piece. No screws or rivet to hold thing together.. I think this system is a vast improvement for mounting scopes.

Now for the gas ram. It is exactly the same length as the Gamo but longer than the NPSS. One thing I noticed is that the shaft was a larger diameter than the ones used in the Gamo's. Again Crosman did a fine job on making sure that the shaft would not move around and the outer housing fit perfect inside the seal piston tube. I am very impressed once again about the quality of the build in the new Benji Trail....

And the last thing I did was replace the stock trigger with a new CDT GRT-III trigger. Looks great with the gold...

Now everything is back together and I put about 30 shots through it with RWS Superdomes .22. Then run her across the chrony. Here are the numbers:

1. 746.6
2. 745,9
3. 738.6
4. 734.8
5. 746.7
6. 728.5
7. 734.1
8. 729.9
9.734.3
10. 735.2
11. 727.5
12. 739.2

These numbers are relative to a new gun with new seal. With a springer, the numbers are generally a bit high and when all the lube is vacant the numbers will come closer together and more consistent. Once a new guide, seal and spring are broken in the numbers will generally go up a bit.

I wish i had the time to sit and put a few hundred pellet through this gun but not a chance.. Hopefully more of you will buy and record your numbers so we all can see what the average will end up to be.

The overall cocking and shooting cycle was excellent in my opinion. Again low muzzle report as in the NPSS. Very smooth and solid shooter. I will be buying another one in .177 once they are available..

Ok I took some pictures to show you what is inside the NP.

Thanks for the review Gene. I ordered the Trail NP with synthetic stock last Friday from Airgunsdaily.
Looks like a good choice.

Thanks again.

No  the RWS seal is to large. Use a Tesla seal for Gamo/Crosman

JM's seal color changes sometimes.

Also Crosman has the seals.

thanx gene.
i just posted a new post about my trail. im getting wild #'s from 650-750 with cphp shot after shot varying 100fps. do you have any idea what might be causing this? could the piston be leaking? i took it apart and everything looks ok...
thanks -jeremy

Do you have a chrony? If so that may tell you the story. If numbers are going up and down like you say, it very well may be a bad piston seal. If a ram is bad it is bad and will not cause numbers to go up and down. Only down...

Just purchased Trail NP and installed GRTIII trigger last night.
Very nice.
I did read (after my install) about a small washer that goes on before the roller on the side of the cocking linkage.
The roller did come off when I removed the barrel but I never saw a washer but I also was not looking for one. It might have stayed on the pin or never existed.
Can anyone confirm that the washer should be there?
Thank you so much.

Yes there is a small plastic washer that sits under the roller on the linkage for spacing out the roller. You should have it there for smooth cocking.

Nice review gene, I've had one of these for about a year now, and have been extremely pleased with its performance, accuracy, and comfort. I have the AW stock'd one. I really like the feel and look of the black synth stock. it is very comfortable to hold grip and shoot. I have a grtIII in this gun also, and that trigger is just fantastic. A few months ago I chrony'd this gun in the 720-730 range. I do not yet own a chrony so i don't have numbers to post just yet, but I have been very pleased with its power, and accuracy. Since I purchased the rifle last summer, I have put approx 5-6K rounds through the gun, and after break-in the gun became a real tack-driver. Mine gets 2" groups at 50yds, and 1-1.5" at 25yds both from the bench. I dont know how it happened, but there have been a couple times that i actually shot 1"+/- groups offhand at 35 yds... And with the weight of this rifle, that is pretty amazing. This has been my go-to pest gun and just a good all-around shooter for me. Its nice to see what is inside. I've thought about sending this gun out for a tune, but it shoots so well already, that ive seen no reason for that just yet. Thanks for the great review gene.

Great review Gene and thanks for reading my current post and sending to me to review after two years earlier your review and breakdown.  It certainly will help me in my quest.

Thank you-
