Title: Gamo Shadow?
Post by: fast14riot on March 12, 2014, 06:07:07 PM
I don't know much about Gamos,  but I just received an email coupon for a local sporting goods store and they have a members only,  2 day only sale on the Gamo Shadow for $95.  Is this a worthwhile gun? I've been in the market for a rifle and this is a good price, but is it a decent gun?

I own 2 Gamo's but not a Shadow. I just read reviews. Very good reviews. A 4-1/2 star rating out of 5. If it were me and I were in the market for another I would jump on it. Hopefully someone who owns one or has shot one will chime in

if I am not mistaken, they no longer make a shadow nor a shadow sport?

I have a shadow sport and it was alright after I took it apart and reworked the inside. had lots of twanginess to it but shot OK at best.

if it has a metal trigger you will need an upgrade, no way around it. the stock trigger is just miserable to put it mildly

yes, if you are willing to put the effort you'll be rewarded with a great sporter... it NEEDs the GTX trigger, and a home tune will work wonders on one... great guns...

I have several of the older model GAMO Shadows (metal barrel and trigger) and they are all excellent shooters.  The stock triggers are usually  very heavy and stiff and definitely need one of Bobs triggers.  Give them a home tune or even just a home cleaning and lube and you'll be glad you bought one.  Heck, even in stock form they're good shooters and $95 sounds like a darn good price to me.

Post up the listing if you can.  The only one I can find that has them is Cabela's: http://www.cabelas.com/product/Gamo-reg-Shadow-Air-Rifle/1259661.uts (http://www.cabelas.com/product/Gamo-reg-Shadow-Air-Rifle/1259661.uts)

looks exactly like my shadow sport.
if you do some work and put in a nice trigger they are a decent gun. by the time you are done with it, may cost you around $160 total if you do your own tune.
add $75-100 to have it done, still would be a good buy

Man, those reviews and questions/answers are just brutal. Lots of PBA being used.

Heck yes it's worth that price.  The S1k was a good platform for Gamo.  At the time they were produced, they were head to head in the same class of the RWS 34 series.  Back then they both cost around $220.00 +/-.   Good steel rifle, that still has iron sites.
Lotsa guys cleaned them up, and had very good success.  I owned 2 of them, and no complaints with them.  The GTA founders both can attest to them.
Add the GRT III trigger, and give it the clean up, and break in like the others have posted, and you'll be grinning.
EDIT:  There is very good aftermarket support for those rifles... ;)

Done deal.

I think this one will need the GRT-4G trigger though, I haven't pulled the stock yet but the blade and safety are plastic. Trigger isn't very heavy, just looooong and squishy with unpredictable break like a green willow branch.

Gun feels good to hold, though I will have to add to the butt of the stock for my 14 1/4" LOP I usually shoot.  Now to do my tuning research and all that.  If anyone has any good links handy, that would be great!

plastic trigger is their smooth action trigger. HUGE improvement over the theoben metal trigger but does not suit everyone. I like mine, but if you so desire to change it... GRT makes one for it also....

It's just that I'm so used to my pistol triggers, short to no first stage and a predictable glass rod break at 22 to 25 oz. This mile long first stage is gonna take some getting used to, I'll fiddle with the adjustment screw a bit and see if it comes into acceptable territory.

Now I just need to get out and sight the thing in.  Got windage about right, but it's still hitting a couple inches low at 6m when I was just trying to get it on the paper.  Will go to 15 to 20 yards for proper sight in.

Also, can't find much of any info on the Web about this gun, should I be searching Shadow 1250 or Shadow 1000 or something else?

I have one that I've modded. Full bull shroud, detuned E3650 spring, CDT trigger and its a beater that shoots great!  I'd also recommend some added weight wrapped in some rags stuffed into stock. Makes a world of difference.

Just wanted to mention that I personally cant stand my SAT trigger. So I have a Charlie da Tuna trigger on its way. Im going to replace my trigger but Im debating if Im going to do the tune that is described in the attached link but anyway, if you replace your trigger then you might want to consider to further follow the instructions in this link...      http://charliedatuna.com/airgun_docs/GRT-4G%20tuning%20supplement.pdf (http://charliedatuna.com/airgun_docs/GRT-4G%20tuning%20supplement.pdf)
Someone else might have better instructions.
Good luck

Yeah, that's the SAT style trigger.  It will need the GRT4g trigger.
I was thinking it was the Steel style model.  Still,,,for $95.00, not a bad deal.
