Title: Yet Another Bottle Rod
Post by: gene_sc on March 01, 2014, 12:15:40 AM
Well spring is near and the weather is warming up here in SC. Have not been in shop for over 4 months, so yesterday and today I spent a few hours out there working on this new .25 Bottle Rod. I will keep adding to this post as I progress. So far I cut the forstock, did the numbers on the cuts and started to work. Got the adaptor square hole cut to proper depth and the cuts for the gauge and fill probe. I altered the width of the adaptor some so I did not have to cut a wider pocket for the adaptor to sit in. I managed to get the alignment and bedding just right on my first cuts.

I have been down this road several times on refinishing M-Rod stocks and have never achieved a finish I have been happy with. I will take a different approach this time around...:) Next will be counter sinking the side of upper stock where the gauge goes so it sits deeper and threads all the way in the adaptor. I may need to make the side cut for the gauge all the way through side of stock. have not got that far yet.

So here are a few rough pictures of the initial cuts.

Gene, it's not only great to see you back at the Mad Scientist stuff but taking us along on this journey. It's one of the MAIN reasons I came to GTA in the first place. You my friend have taught me TONS in such a short time. I look forward to every project to show us. Might as well set me a price when you figure it out. It will look great in the rack next to your MR2.
:)

Got some more done today. Finished the rough cut of the bottle to adaptor inletting. I still need to do some more fine sanding around the edges but it is bedded now and fits great. Tomorrow if the weather holds out I will strip it down and let dry in preparation for sanding. Here are some more pic.

Well we have had another cold streak and no work has been done..:) When it gets below 50 degrees I stay inside mostly now..:) But the next few days it is supposed to be in the low 70's so maybe I can get some wet sanding done..:)

OK, it is not done but close. Still need to finish shroud and paint it. Morgan butt pad needs to be fitted properly. Leak test revealed a leak at gauge but I did not use Teflon tape on it..  I used it with the Crosman stuff on it. I may have to pull the other fitting off as well and tape it too.

This was a fun project and learned a lot about paints. I used regular old Rustolium spray enamel. About 8 thin coats and then wet sanded it all down. Final 4 coats of Poly clear gloss.

I have to say though that I like the natural wood better but I could not get the finish I wanted after stripping and sanding the stock down. If anyone has seen Tom's B=Rod stock, that one is absolutely gorgeous. Great job  Tom.

Here are some more pics.

Sorry, late to chime in Bawanah Gene. My new baby is looking GREAT!!!
:)
Will be easy to keep track of at the Fun Shoot. Tossing around the name (as I always name them) for this beauty. Lightning (yellow)...Big Bird??? LOL
Z-28 Bottle Rocket? Yellow with black accents like a Camaro Z-28.
HaaHaa
May need to have a name contest.
But it is looking great Gene. I am VERY glad to see you get back on the bench doing what you love. And it will reside honorably next to MR2....one of your other most outstanding works of art. I will have it at the Fun Shoot again this year for those that have not seen it or shot it.
Looking good!!!!

The forestock, bottom and grip area has rubberized skid tape. Actually I bought it off E-Bay and it was specifically used for hand gun grips. It is thin and flexible so I could make it contour to the curves. Worked out really well.

Played a bit this weekend in the shop. I was able to shoot the Killer B-Rod (Saturday Night Live skit reference) at the Fun Shoot and it SURE is sweet. I was nailing a target at around 25-30 yards (no big feat but...) using either H&N Baracuda Extreme Hunter (28.4gr) and EunJin 43.2gr ammo without any changes. Hit same POI. So this beauty is also deadly accurate. :)
It was a tad loud for me, it needed some backyard friendly adjustments. LOL
Gene had put a shorty shroud on it that ended right at the barrel crown. I opted to add a longer shroud of carbon fiber and drop in a few baffles, like the factory. Tubing came in last week so this weekend I went to work. I measured and cut 3 bushings. One to slide all the way down the barrel to the breech block to support the shroud, one in the middle to keep it centered and one that slid onto the end of the barrel to make sure the shroud stayed centered. I cut and recessed all 5 of the baffles to plug into each other. I made the end bushing the same way so the baffles would lock into place on it. I cut a brass end cap and also opened it up to where the baffles locked into it. So, the whole string of innards were locked together. :)
I laid the CF tube beside the barrel and baffle assembly to measure and cut to exact fit.

Everything slid together quite snugly and securely. I used set screws in the Delrin bushings to lock them in place.

After assembling, I really like the look of CF tubing!!!

I shot this beast in the shop into a 2x4. It knocked the 2x4 off the bench 10 yards away. And STILL is pretty loud even with a shroud and 5 baffles. I really need to see what this beauty and the beast is cranking out for power. Will Chrony this week just to see. But it's still gorgeous and deadly. Thanks again Bawanah Gene!!!
Killer B-Rod...

Dez!! That's as sexy as all get out!!!!! wow!!! Where did you get your CF tubing??? the CF tubing I usually get is structural so as the lay out the matting and resin on the mandrel and the gel coat they then wrap it with a shrinkwrap so as its heated and cured the mandrel expands and the shrink wrap... well shrinks... it forces any voids and such out of the material...... and while its still pretty it doesn't have such a nice smooth finish..... the shrinkwrap leaves ridges in the gelcoat after its removed.....

After getting home from a depressing day at work (felt like a Monday) I needed some "ME" time. I thought I could really get to shoot the Killer B-Rod or go down to the shop and start working on some new gun shelving racks for my Man Cave closet. I opted for the former, gonna sling some lead. I had just bought 8 tins of JSB Exact King Diabolo 25.39gr ammo. I planned on shooting several different rounds but kept my fingers crossed the Killer B liked the JSBs.
I set a target stand out at 40 yards. My stand is made up of 2x4's on edge screwed to a standing 2x4. Then a 2x4 T on top. To this I attach a 1x8 and stick my Shoot-N-C targets to that. So, there's lots of wood to absorb the rounds. I also have a spoon stand set out at 37 yards and my Starling/HOSP house trap at around 65 yards with a foam filled 10oz bottle dangling below it for a target.
I topped off at 3K and loaded 4 magazines with the JSBs. It took 4-5 shots to get on the dime size bullseye but after that, it was on. I shot a few clips, checked pressure and loaded more clips. I shot the center out of the target. I went down and used the replacement dots and covered the best I could the almost destroyed center. I noticed the 1x8 was buckling. I shot 2 more clips and the bullseye was gone again. And the 1x8 was totally split down the center, needs replacing now. So I turned my attention to the 65 yard dangling bottle. I aimed at the neck expecting it to smack about the middle or bottom of the target. Nope....exactly where I aimed. Hmmm....
This got the bottle swinging and I had an absolute blast timing and firing at a moving target. Never missed, and went through an entire clip. Then focused on the spoon rack. I aimed a little low, toward the bottom edge of the spoon and the round smacked dead center. Three shots and the spoon was totally destroyed. Wow...
After firing 8 magazines, 64 rounds, the air supply went from 3K to about 2100-2200. And POI never changed. I AM IMPRESSED and very happy.
Gene is known for turning out nothing less than quality from his shop and this one just proves it again. THANK YOU my friend for such a nice, powerful, accurate and sharp airgun. :)
And the topper is it likes the ton of ammo I bought. Whew....
:)
Best way I could turn this day around and put a smile on my face. Priceless!!!!!

I am happy you enjoyed your shooting session Dez. Best dam barrel  Crosman ever put on any of their rifles is the GM barrel. She is totally stock and I just pieced her together with parts I had here in my shop. Nothing special except for some TLC...:) The main thing is you are enjoying her and that really makes me happy. Hopefully the B-Rod will give you many years of enjoyment.
