Title: Question, Can you switch out a Mainspring for a Strut?
Post by: 2nd RCHA on February 25, 2014, 07:28:52 PM
Hey there Guy's, I have a question, Can you switch out a Mainspring for a Gas-Strut, without doing anything else, or do you need to switch out the piston as well?, I was thinking of switching one of my Cometa's, When I tuned them, they all received Crosman Quest 1000 mainsprings, I know there are "kit's" for some Crosman Models, http://scopesandammo.com/storefront/product_info.php/npss-conversion-kit-for-phantomquest-1000-p-471 (http://scopesandammo.com/storefront/product_info.php/npss-conversion-kit-for-phantomquest-1000-p-471) ,So I was wondering if the same kit would work for a Cometa,,,I know they stick Crosman Nitro Pistons in some Gamo's,, Let me know what you guy's think. Thank's, Andy.

1st off ... ONLY those rifles with piston NOT HAVING a cocking stem down the middle of spring qualify for such conversions.
Piston design MUST BE that of being held by sear in cocked position by its side.

What Scott said is totally correct.  Not all guns can be converted to gas struts.  Of those that can be converted there may be some machine work required in the piston, replacement of the piston, and possible shortening of the gas strut shaft.  It can be a simple conversion but it's not guaranteed.

It's been awhile since I was into my Cometa so I forget the details, but lloking at pic online you can see the piston has an extension at the top to catch the trigger sear and the spring runs through clear. It looks like a gas ram can be readily fitted. I just saw that the 400, fenix, fusion models now come with gas ram from the factory, and its fitted reversed like Crosman's NP2 pistons. This looks lik a very doable mod. I may take it on later depending on the arrangement of the rear spring guide. If I have to destroy the rear I wont tackle it. But if it's removable I'll give it a shot.

Usually there is some minor machining to be done, especially to mount it reverse like that, the rear spring guide needs to be removed completely and then either a plate made with a divot to hold the ram or you have to weld up the hole and drill the divot in there, that is if there is enough room to even put the gas ram in and cock the rifle....

If you are going to mount the gas ram with the shaft forward like Crosman does with most of their current guns then you will need to order the newer piston with the divot machined into the piston.  All in all it isn't hard to do if you have some tools and some know how or you send it off to someone and get them to do it...
