Title: Does anyone like their m48 at a specific tune or velocity?
Post by: pelletpusher on February 15, 2014, 04:13:49 PM
I have three springs for my .22 m48, two from ARH one is new and the other one is broke in. The
third is the broke factory spring. The replacement springs are really nice and have tons of power,
but i decided to try and tune mine down a bit for taking care of pests in my back yard. Its
40yds and under and i dont wana be zinging pellets in an unsafe manner. So i took the broke spring
with three coils missing and cut off four more. Then i closed the end, ground, and polished both
ends of the spring. When i installed it i could do it by hand,I'm guessing maybe 15lb's of pre-load.
It shoots great and its tamer.Im getting 675fps with 14.66 gr. & 725fps with jsb rs 13.43 gr.That's
the range I was shooting for,I cant believe i got it on the first try.
I'm just curious has anybody else done this and have something to share?

That's like hand-loading your powder burner for different needs. Target, hunting. etc.

What kind of spring compressor do you use btw?

A four foot bar clamp.

Very cool.  Looks like putting our 15 ft/lb or so, still really effective.  I had not considered doing this, but it make me perk up on getting a 48!  Does she cock pretty easy as well at the reduced power?

I had a Diana 48 in .22 that I used to use as a backup FT rifle.  It barely would crack 20 FPE with midweight pellets.  It was SUPER smooth and really easy to shoot. Very linear motion from the rifle and really easy to shoot.   I succumbed to my evil side and put a full power kit from JM into it which got it up to 22.5 FPE on average, but frankly, it was much harder to shoot as accurately when it was 19fpe+   I miss that air rifle.  :P

It's still smooth as silk, but a whole lot easier to cock & de-cock.

Nice - is it any quieter at lower power?

Quack!

I am a big fan of detuning.  Especially guns that were originally designed to be lower powered, then tuned up for the US market.
