Title: Benjamin Trail NPXL .22
Post by: twh731 on December 21, 2010, 08:06:56 PM
New on board here.  Airgunning is my second passion after my Garand and 1911.  I am interested in acquiring a Benjamin Trail NPXL in .22 cal.  I have a Shadow .177 which shoots pretty badly but is fun and I can keep my shots about 3 inches off hand on a 30 yard target.  Unfortunately it's favorite pellet is the PBA gold which is expensive.  I want to move up in power and range so have been shopping for the past several months lurking on the various airgun boards.  I have pretty much decided on the Trail NP XL after considering the B28, TechForce Jet, Walther Talon and Falcon Hunter, and the Mach 12.5.  Who has the best smoking deal right now at Christmas time on the Benjamin Trail?  Any other considerations?  Price is a consideration for me so no sense in tempting me with a Air Force Talon or other such dreamy AG.  Thanks.  I've found that people in the shooting sports are some of the most helpful folks around.

What's your price range? I think there is one with extra parts listed in the Classifieds here.

are you set on getting a springer? maybe consider a benjamin discovery with pump. if power/range is your concern i would look into it. being a PCP it is also among the most accurate airguns as well. upon comparison with the trail xl, the disco is not a terrible increase in price either. also highly modifiable for power etc.

Welcome to the GTA Twh731, just so you know I am pretty new here and also new to air guns to, I bought a Trail NP XL1100 and just about drove me crazy, these guns are very hold sensitive you have to use the artillery hold. It took me a while to figure out the secrets to holding mine. I guess you could call it a kind of love hate relationship....lol. Good luck finding one in stock anywhere, I got mine from a member here on the GTA classifieds. I know Crowpopper has his up for sale there and from what he has posted in the past about that gun I would not hesitate to buy it, just my 2 cents........Jerry

I have both the TF Jet and the Npxl1100. The Jet has way more power. Almost 100 fps more. I cannot speak for the jets accuracy at longer range, but it shoots 1 holers at 10 yards. The Npxl has good power and its much much quiter then the Jet. It is very accurate at long range. It is easier to cock then the jet. I really like both guns, and givin the choice to choose only one, I would have a hard time deciding.

Welcome to GTA Forums. Glad you found us and joined up. We are a family of airgun addicts, so welcome to the sickness.  :P
I have an XL1100 and love it. It's heavy, long and harder to cock than most. But it has massive power and is VERY accurate long range with the right shooter. And I can't imagine an airgun (break barrel/springer/NP type) having MORE power than the XL1100 and being HARDER to cock? Wow..talk about a bicep builder. LOL
Anyway, good luck finding a new one for sale. Seems everyone is sold out. You might check Dick's Sporting Goods, Cabela's, Bass Pro Shop, Gander Mountain or any other sporting goods store close to you. One other suggestion is look for a Benjamin Super Streak in .22. Then order from Crosman a gas RAM, piston with seal and the other internal parts to convert it to NP. The cost would probably be around $75 for all parts. To me the plus would be a little lighter gun, a better scope and iron sights. For some reason my SS weighs in about 1-2lbs lighter than my XL1100. There are still a few Super Streaks to be found.
Again welcome. Post often and post plenty of pictures. We like to see and hear about your adventures in airgunning.
Happy Shooting!!!!
Dave

I actually saw one (NPXL1100) on the shelf at Academy Sports last week....not sure if you have those in your neck of the woods.

Ezman,
I couldn't believe it myself. As soon as I got the jet I put it over the chrony. It shoots predators almost 900 fps. I am really amazed at the overall quality, look feel, and power of the jet. I just need to test long range accuracy.

Wow!  You guys are really on the ball.  As nice as Crow's gun sounds it's a little out of my price range.  Since this is my SECOND passion I have to be somewhat frugal, unfortunately.  As far as buying a gun from an actual store, well.....  I really live in the boondocks here in NM.  Albuquerque is 3 hours away and Santa Fe thinks everything they have is made of gold.  It will be an online order probably.  I have been watching gunbroker and there is a Walther Falcon there at a reasonable price but I don't know that much about the Falcon either.  My goal is to achieve a true 900 - 1000 fps and be able to take the occassional rabbit or grouse skulking about our property.  We do occassionally get coyotes right up by the house and I have 3 dogs but they are older and I'm afraid would lose any serious confrontation.  My neighbors pretty much leave us alone but don't necessarily mind their own business if you know what I mean, so any firearm discharge will be cause for scrutiny although not necessarily illegal.  The local sheriff is guarded about answering that question.  So since most of the NP XL owners comment on the quietness of the gun and the power and accuracy, that is what I'm basing my quest to purchase a Trail NP XL in .22 on.  I am still shopping, though and appreciate all of your opinions.  By the way, I have a total of about 12 different boxes of .177 pellets and my Shadow really does shoot the PBA the best and I have chronographed it at 957 to 1015 fps with that pellet.  Although it does best accuracy with this pellet it is still no tack driver.  I gave up trying to bench shoot it at all and have tried all manner of shooting styles including "artillery" hold.  It does best using the smallbore standing hold where you twist you hips to the trigger side and rest your forehand elbow on your foreward hip with the fingers of that hand providing a platform just infront of the trigger guard.  I's comfortable and steady once you get used to it.  I'm finding it very difficult to come up with a definite decision on what to buy.  It will probably come down to whatever meets most of my requirements at the time I have the money in my hand.  But I am having fun researching and shopping.  Thanks a bunch for all your input  I have so many questions.  Tom

Benjamin trail np xl 1100 is my first break barrel airgun and I love it.  I thought that this gun would be hard to shoot because it is "hold sensitive" and has double recoil and all that but I decided to get it.  After the gun is broken in it is a pleasure to shoot and is easy to shoot, at least to me it is easy to shoot, the gun does like the artillary hold, is silk smooth, very quiet, and actually accurate! The only other break barrel I shot was a crossman quest 1000 scoped.  it was louder than the xl and had accuracy problems.  I think the xl 1100 is a very good choice.  I got mine from Wholesale Sports cause I couldn't find any online store that had it in stock, and I went to the sports store just to look around and then I enter the airgun section and as I looked at the top of the isle I saw my benjamin trail np xl.

I'd buy Crowpoprer's gun, it will save you a ton on extras that you WILL want.
or
I'd try Crossman Direct.  Sometimes they have discounts, I seem to remember 30% off all of the NP series the day after Thanksgiving. The price was slightly better than PA.  They have 200 in stock  as of yesterday, too.  Lastly, their customer service is the second to none.

Same gun as the Benjamin Super Streak but it carries a 2 year warranty. So I would imagine that it too could be converted to a gas ram with the parts from Crosman
