Title: My newest new XS46U
Post by: Oldgringo on January 11, 2014, 05:04:42 PM
Mike swapped out the recalcitrant .22 caliber 46U for a .177 caliber 46U.  This .177 caliber is a KEEPER.  Less than a 100 pellets through her and she is giving 5 shot one hole groups with several different pellets today at 10 M.  Our backyard has a 6' fence around it and the breezes today were fairly stout and swirly.  Tomorrow, we'll move out to 25 yards and see what we can do.

Thanks, Mike Mellick.  You are the man!  :D

Tickled to death to hear that you got one that suited ya, Greg.  Mike sounds like some kinda guy, the way he bends over backwards to please folks. I may have to try a 46U .177 next! Thanks for the report!

Nice to hear you like the 177 Greg. I have the same gun, drove to Iowa to pick it up from Mike directly. My gun liked several pellets also, although it was rather fond of rws superdomes. It chronies at 830 fps average with the rws superdomes. It has accounted for several pigeons off the top of the silos here on the farm, some as far away as 55 yards. Enjoy your new shooter and keep us updated please.....

WOW, just WOW!  Less than a 100 rounds and 1/2" groups at 25 yards with JSB Exacts at about 850 fps.

How is it loading .177 instead of .22s?  Still a springer? Or rammed?

Springer.  It's harder to stick those little-bitty pellets in that little-bitty hole but it works...if my fingers aren't too cold.  Today was a nice 66°, but breezy day in the Pineywoods and shooting was pleasant.

Greg, have both of your 46U's been full-tuned by Mike?

I only have one 46U.  Mike took back the .22 and exchanged it for the .177.  They were both purchased 'fully tuned'.  There is, to me, a night and day difference between the .22 and the .177.

i picked up a used 46 in 22 wit the gas ram and tune and im really impressed with it.  Havent gotten much trigger time in but yesterday i was occasionally getting 3 shot groups in a dime at 20 yards.

My XS46U Gas ram .177 loves the jsb exact heavies. I can easily hit 1/2 inch ctc at fifty yards. I can't say enough about it for the price I paid. I am very happy.

This is very interesting, yet another desirable springer that is within reach too.

Keep us posted as time goes by, on results and the like.

Thanks,

Mike

Greg,
"Recalcitrant",was that just that particular rifle or is that the nature of the 22 caliber pellet in any rifle ? I am still looking at all the possible 22 airgun options but if that is the case with most 22's then I'll just stick with the .177.
I am glad you are getting some nice shooting time and enjoying your new 46U. It doesn't know if it wants to snow or rain here in Ohio. We finally put the metal roof on the new range building out behind the barn yesterday so now I can start shooting under cover from rain or snow.
Happy shooting,
Ray

I have to 46u in .22. It shoots really good.  I think Greg got a lemon but Mike took care of him.

Mornin' Ray,

I think it may be as Rob said above.  Others praise their .22's.  My 2289 shot better groups than I could get with that 46U in .22 caliber.  That said, I'm tickled with Mike Mellick's service and my new 46U in .177.  So far it is a humdinger.

Edit PS:

Mike said he shot a 1/2" group with the returned 46U in near blizzard conditions.  It may be that I just never got the right pellets through it.  My current 46U is very picky about pellet choice.  I first thought RWS SD were preferred but when we moved out to 25 yards, it became very apparent that 8.4gr. JSB Exacts is what she wanted.

My 22 cal Browning leverage (same gun as 46U) shoots extremely accurately and with a lot of authority too.  My gun likes the 14.66g H&N FTTs best and shoots sub 1/2" groups at 20 yards consistently.

My .22 46U was shooting really good groups till yesterday. It was shooting good groups with all the pellets I was trying but each one was grouping at different spots on paper.Yesterday that all went south on me.Two grouping to the right 3" off then two left 3" off. Some down groups some up groups.Good groups for a few then it moved somewhere else.I am hoping its not another scope gone south on me.Everything is tight as a tick everywhere also.I did find a breach seal has blown out in one spot and I have some on the way.I really wouldnt think this would be changing groups on me though.

Sounds familiar.... :(  After trying three different scopes and then open sights, I concluded it was the gun.

CERTAINLY a "blown out" breech seal will affect/ruin accuracy.

Thanks guys, for retrieving my faith in a 22. Is the recoil that bad on the 46U that it is detroying scopes though ? I would think that the 22 version would have a softer recoil over the .177.
Snapper, what kind of scope do you have mounted? Is your paralax adjusted correctly and you are using the same cheek weld easch time you shoot.Sometimes ,I myself, get lazy and forget the basics and my groups will be all over the place.

Bill I hope you are right about the breach seal ruining accuracy.AB my scope is a Winchester 3x9x32 Spring Gun Rated Scope.Nothing has changed except for the breach seal.I have been bragging on accuracy till yesterday.

I don't think the heavy 46U will be a scope killer if left in spring power.  Converting mine to reverse gas ram using the Crosman gas ram gave the rifle a sharper recoil that seems worse than the spring.  Due to the dramatic increase in cocking effort it was converted back to spring.

I can see where these could eat breach seals.  A sharp loading port with a compression tube that rotates a few degrees and it depends upon the breach seal to center it when closed.

The cocking arm on my 46U is a little wobbly.  Did I see a fix for that on here somewhere or was it a vision?

Nope it was on here.  Not under that title its just in a 46u thread.  Mike even posted the answer for the fix.  Give him a call when he gets back from Shot.  He will help you.  I just shipped out my B2 to have him fix/tune it.  It should be in his hands on Wednesday. I cannot wait to shoot that gun for real when he is done.  I think its missing a breech seal I was only avg 240fps for a .22 :o

I got my new breach seals in and replaced the one that was blown out on the side but it didnt improve accuracy at all.I guess this scope has gone south on me.At 10 yrds two or three will be in the same hole then they will move 3"- 4" and two or three in the same hole again and then it moves again another 3"- 4".

Oh heck, that might be to your advantage if you are shooting at running rodents.

Mike recommended ice maker tube.  I am using lubed stacked washers, but the the ice maker tube works well.  With the stock removed its the pin with the c-clips holding the lever to the tube.

Cut a 1/2 x 3/4" ( I think ) section of plastic milk jug ( almost sure ) and place it between the lever and the tube.  Use the pin to punch the hole. ( real sure of that ) ;D

Sorry, i should have mentioned that the fix is for the cocking arm.  It fixed the slack in the cocking stroke.  It wont help any side to side play.

The cocking arm on my 46U is a little wobbly.  Did I see a fix for that on here somewhere or was it a vision?

"there are two types of cocking arms, the new type has a slot cut in the pivot of the arm, the old one is one piece. The cure for a wobbly cocking arm is to cut a piece of pop bottle plastic about 1/2 inch wide and an inch long, put that in one side of the slot then push the cocking arm down into position and use the pin as a punch to drive a hole in it, then trim off excess, should firm it up ..."  Quoted from one of Mike M's posts on the subject.
