Title: Another 46U
Post by: Paul68 on January 09, 2014, 05:13:27 PM
My Gas rammed 46U from Mike at flyingdragonairrifles.org (http://flyingdragonairrifles.org) showed up a few days ago. Nice looking rifle. If not for the bulky plastic front site and lever latch, would look worth more than it costs. Was going to wait until I had some decent 177 pellets on hand, but said what the heck and put a few of what I had laying around through it.

Tech Force pointed pellets, (supposed to be 7.4 grain), produced 988 FPS and 16 FPE.

Eu Jin 16.1 grain produced 701 fps 17.5 FPE

Mine is untuned, just has a ram installed.

This power is above average for a 177. The Tech force pellets are too light, and the Eu Jins are way too heavy. Since it still produced more power with the too heavy Eu Jins and was probably suffering under their weight, I'm guessing around 18+ FPE with some 10 grain pellets once I get em.

Will be interesting to see what happens with a lube tune and aftermarket seal. Look forward to getting a scope on it and some accuracy testing done for a review. As it stands, another nice job from Mike.

If Mike rammed it, it has a tune.  He would not strip just to ram it.  He cleans everything up while he is in there

Paul, as I recall, my .22 cal gas ram rifle shot almost any weight pellet within about a 10% to 15% spread in fpe.

In my case, the spread in weight was 13.4gr to 25.4gr, nearly a factor of two which is similar to yours.

As usual, accuracy trumps energy every time in my book but I lucked out and got both with the 46U.

BTW, go ahead and make a small divot in the barrel and drive the set screw into it to keep the front sight from walking off the end of the barrel.  I wasn't the only one with that issue it seems.

Paul, a couple of questions:

1. Why did you choose .177 over .22?

2. I assume that the reason you got your 46U untuned is because you'll tune it.  When Mike installed the ram, did he also clean and lube it (aka the "basic" tune) or is it truly untuned?

Nice gun, BTW.  As you have written numerous times, MM guns are a great way to experience high-end feel, performance and accuracy at affordable prices.  I love my XS28M and my wife's XS12.

According to Mike, he simply installed the ram and nothing else. The 177 seems to work more efficiently than the 22 with the 46U. Plus I can use a heavy 10gr pellet, and get both power and flatter trajectory. I've begun the teardown already, and will be adding a new seal and honing the cylinder. I'll also probably be doing some smoothing to the loading port. The trigger is going to get a cleanup also. I don't like the sights, so I'm removing the rear and reshaping the front to produce a round muzzle brake. I hope to refinish the stock as well, but time is limited so that'll probably have to wait.

That's going to be a wonderful gun when you're finished with it.  Thanks for answering my question about .177 vs .22 on this gun.  I have so much to learn!

Did you ask mike to jus put the ram in and not tune it? On my TF 99p he assured the ram install was a full blown tune.I'm sure there is no aftermarket seal he used in the setup. He did work the trigger to just about a hair lol... Anyways let us know what seal you will be choosing and from where?

I simply told him all I wanted was a rammed 46U, no major work needed. If you choose a full tune from Mike, you can be sure that's what you get. I still gotta open the tube to measure and check the seal before I know which one I'll use. Just breaking the gun down here and there in spare time so it's taking longer than usual. I currently have very good luck with Vortek parts, so will probably go with one of theirs if they have one applicable.
