Well there seems to be alot of talk about the RS2 (1073/1074 etc) around here lately and this would also be valid for TF-89 and all the other clones so I thought I would post my latest build I am doing for a customer on his RS2
Along with all the typical deburring and polishing of various bits and peices, honing and crosshatching the compression chamber, crown work and lead in work of the breach plus a complete teardown of the trigger group for smoothing and polish and all the other assorted fitting of parts and such here are a few pictures of the piston conversion from a screw on type of seal to a more modern round dovetail/donut type of seal and a couple pics of the spring guide and tophat...
Stock guide and new guide+tophat

And here is what I am really enjoying and proud of the conversion to a nice JM Apex seal from the old screw on type seal..... the washer in the picture is to space the seal back out some as the JM seal is thinner then the stock seal and this keeps the piston from bottoming out on the cocking arms causing all kinds of bad things the Piston had some REALLY nasty burrs on it from where the front is press fitted together so when I turned the spacer to size I also made a couple clean up passes to remove any and all burrs...

Make sure you send all your TF-99's and TF-97's to Michael...:) Looks like he has a handle on them babies now...:)

Wow, wish I knew you were working on RS2's before I started trying to do mine myself! Looks like it will be a great shooter when it's done. Very curious what it ends up getting on the chrony. Question.....is that an APex small or large seal? I have a small with the adapter like you show, but the base of the seal (narrow end) is a slightly smaller diameter than the piston......wondering if I should have ordered the large seal.
-
Seems the rs2(along with the tf guns) have alot of differences in the compression chamber.... only real good way to make sure you have the right seal is to measure it with a set of calipers.... this one measured out right at 1.020 so I believe it was the apex small I ordered which run about 1.028

Thanks for posting this. I just ordered the piston adapter and it's $1.00 off. Now I will have something to replace my RS2 seal when power goes down to low 6's with 14.3 cphp. I can use the crosman spring (B-18) & seal. The springs compared side by side is 1.5" shorter (crosmans) but if you use the back spring guide it's perfect fit. That's what I used on my B-26 to get low 7's with 14.3 cphp... Seal and spring from crosman is dirt cheap

Great work Michael! Those custom parts along with everything else you've done will make that a sweet shooter for sure!
-
well i talked to michael last night about this shooter and she's ready to come home! yahooooo! and i'll post some pics of groups once her new glass gets here....but i think this shooter will be sweet! once those rs2 triggers are worked over they are some of the best! and thanks again for doing this monster tune for me cheers bart

Im familiar with the tophat, but not familiar with the guide. Can someone explain how and what a guide does for a np?
thanks Henry

Very nice MichaelM, think I might be sending you some business....

MM, just wondering about the seal adaptor, since it is also a screw in part as was the original piece, how does it get tightened without a tool slot? Is it just turned in by hand and held with a bit of loctite?

Strap wrench :) and of course locktite but it was tightend down with a strap wrench... usefull tools those things!

Curious what kind of chrono numbers you got. After a lot of pain and suffering finally got mine back together. New JM spring, hone, moly, apex seal and adapter. After about 50 shots put it through the chrono. Its smoother and consistent, but with Crossman 14.3 hollowpoints only getting 670fps at 25 degrees outside. Was expecting better numbers.
