Is there a difference between these two rifles? I know Weihrauch makes them both, and it would appear the only real difference between the two is the R7 has a muzzle brake and the HW30 does not. If this is the case, then why is the R7 $60 more?
Another thing I was wondering is how hold sensitive these rifles are. I have never been much of a springer shooter, but then again, I have never bought a quality one with a decent scope, either. If I get the HW30/R7 and one of the Hawke 3-9x40 scopes and I am diligent about learning and using the artillery hold, is this a good platform to become a proficient springer shooter?

the R-7 has a muzzle brake and a checkered stock
the plain 30 has open sights
the 30 comes in a deluxe also with a checkered stock with open sights
i have a Hawke 2x7x32 on my R-7 nice fit on the smaller R-7 they are a dream to shoot they are not hold picky . all day shooter you won't want to put it down

With sights the 30S is a nice light weight plinker. For a scope I use a 2-7X32 Hawke as well. A small gun needs a small scope.

i bought my R-7 back when they offered it with open sights just like the HW30'S Deluxe with sights to save a little money IMHO i would by the the HW30's forget the muzzle brake and checkered stock and put the extra cash on a scope and mount unless you wanted to shoot it open sights no matter what it's all the same gun a couple other scope options are the leapers bug busters or the 2x7x32 bsa

Barrel length on the newer R7's is shorter than the HW30S (13.5" vs 15.5") and the R7 has a shorter overall length. Fun to shoot and very accurate, you won't find either too hold sensitive.

Between the R7 and the HW30s,I went with the HW30s. For me,I wanted the open sights.I also put a Williams peep sight on it and kepted it nice and light and handy.If I ever do go scope,I will no doubt go the 2x7x32mm route and keep it short and sweet.I have a Diana 34 but shoot the HW30s more and have been using that on pests ( barn rats ),more then the 34.Mine is very accurate,smooth,quiet and not hold sensitive. You have to come to terms on if you want sights or not.I don't have the fancy checkering but don't figure I need the added cost.I have a very nice piece of wood on my 30s anyhow.The muzzel brake is not really a muzzel brake,it is more or less a cocking aid which really isn't needed on the HW30s as the cocking effort is very easy.With the R7,you are stuck with a scope for ever and ever.

I like target shooting at 50 yards with my AG's. What's the 30 like at that distance?

You can't go wrong with either one, you just have to decide if you ever wanna shoot with sights cuz once u go with the r7 there will be no sights for you.

already been explained. I choose the HW30s to get the iron sights, which I used for several weeks before putting a 4X Leapers scope on it. My old eyes need a scope but I sure don't anything larger than 4X for airgun distances in my back yard. The Leapers is small and that looks better on the HW30.

I have the HW30S which I bought a while ago at a good price (given a favorable exchange rate) from a Canadian firm. I took off the iron sights and put on a muzzle brake.
A large scope on this gun will be a disappointment; there's not enough room. Stick with 2x7x32mm such as the Hawke version available from Straight Shooters.
Beeman stocks are a bit nicer than HW stocks.
If you're going to stick with iron sights, get the HW30. If you're going to put on a scope, get the Beeman.
My HW30S chronys at 553 fs with H&N FTT's (8.64 grains) for a ft lb of about 4.6. IMHO shooting at 50 yds is a bit of a stretch for such a low powered air gun. I've never tried the HW30S at that distance, but I have tried it at 30 yards. It doesn't have the energy to knock over a Gamo knockdown metal target at that distance.
I use my Beeman HW50 or my Beeman R1 for long distances. The HW30S is a treat to shoot from 10 to 20-25 yards.

I have,so far,only practiced with my HW30s at 50 feet with the factory open sights and then after installing the Williams peep site. The accuracy is amazing even with my old eyes. The Williams Peep really made the difference for me.When I seen that I could put all my shots within a 3/4" circle at 50 feet,I put the little gun to work on the barn rats. I doubt it would be a very good pick for a 50 yard gun.That's where my scoped Diana 34 comes in handy.Would I buy the HW30s again after knowing what it is and what it can or can not do? You bet I would.

50 yards is a stretch. Out to 30 yards OK. They are roughly a 6 fpe gun, 10 meter power.
