Title: Polishing?
Post by: Laz on December 10, 2013, 07:27:22 PM
Hey guys, I was thinking of sanding and polishing the crappy bluing on one of my airguns to give it that "stainless" look even though its not SS. Anyone done this? How would I go about protecting the bare, polished steel? Just the norm, keep it oiled or would some type of spray on work? I don't really care if its shiny or dull, I just like the look of the bare steel. Any help much appreciated, thanks!

BTW, idk if I posted this in the right place.

Product like Gun-Kote works well.
Or use a hard carnuba Paste Wax like Trewax rubbed on, allowed to dry and then buffed a few times.

Others will add there ways also ....  ;)

Thanks Scott. About the Trewax (as it can be bought at my local hardware store) how was your experience with it? How or do I need to oil the part, or just re apply wax if it wears off? I was looking to only polish a part that doesn't ever have to be touched by hands, figured it would look cool too.

For the wax to stick and load up the metals pores, need to be CLEAN and oil free ... Raw steel !!

Here is my old Crosman 160 polished. Bluing was kind of rough and needed resealing so I went at it.

Took it apart to reseal and polished every part including the trigger guard, screws, peep sight etc.

Just chucked the big parts in my lathe and went to work with emory cloth and then a buffing wheel.

Also did the stock while at it, how do you like that wood in those old guns?

All I do with any of my rifles is use a cloth damp with ATF, also use ATF to lube all my CO2 guns.

How do you protect that bare metal bobbyjim? I don't think I understand? I'm thinking of stripping the barrel & polishing on my 97. Messed up the bluing big time   >:(  :(

I keep a polishing cloth that has been dampened with plain old ATF (trans fluid) evey once in awhile I wipe the rifle down. And of couse if I use it I wipe it down. Seems to work for me and not only do I use it to wipe guns down I also use it in all my CO2 and pump guns. Been using ATF for about 40 years in and on air guns, air tools etc.

What brand and model is your rifle? It would be kind of difficult doing it by hand but guess it's possible. Just use fine emory cloth.
On my rifle I dissassembled it and chucked the round parts in a lathe. But on the smaller parts it was just hand polishing and then finish on a buffing wheel with compound.
