Hi to everybody..
This is my first topic in this forum and I hope I haven't opened it in the wrong place.
Two weeks ago I bought a second hand AA S510 Xtra 22 (three months old) with altaros regulator installed. The previous owner claimed that he had adjusted it and made 40 stable shots starting at 200 bars. He has shared these shots in an airgun forum.
Last weekend I had the chance to try this air rifle and noticed an inconsistency ranging from 200 bars to 130 bars. The next day, I tried 40 shots at 50 meters starting from 190 bars (why 190? cos the air stock in my scuba tank was low) and the result:
Forty shots (10 x 40) starting from right to left.
range: 50 meters
aim points are the black marks at the top of the paper.
pressure: 190 bars (at the end 140 bars.)
The rifle demonstrates a non-regulated performance , it achieves stability at the third group. Fifth group and the sixth one (I didn't share here the sixth group, it was on another target) show the same consistency with the third one(30 shots). The previous owner claims that there is atmospheric pressure difference, he lives at 870 meters altitude and reg is adjusted at this altitude. I live in Istanbul and I shot at sea level. There is ''1 bar'' pressure difference. That sounds pretty nonsense.
I am new at pcp air rifles, and will be glad if you share your comments.
Thanx..

Indeed looks like the Regulator is NOT working as you suspect.
If original owner goofed with it having the set point moved up to a higher pressure, gun could be operating simply UNDER that set point.
Can only guess on this one :P

A chronograph would be very helpful.

Motorhead is right and so is this^^. Only way to know what is happening for sure is a chronograph. In general I have heard that gun doesn't need a reg and doesn't do that well with one.
-
It look like theres tankpressure all the way through the gun.... The gun has been optimized for the lower pressure from the regulator and the hammer are having trouble opening the valve enough, giving lower fps at high pressure.
My guess is a "stuck open" regulator...

Thanx to all for your contributions. Today I contacted one of the expert members in the airgun forum where I had shared the same problem and seeked help. As a coincidence, this member was the first person to install the reg into my gun, adjust and send it to the previous owner.(The owner buys this gun, sends it to this member, wants to install the reg and adjust it) Shortly he knows the gun. He said that the gun had been perfect after this installation and adjustment. But the owner of the gun tries to readjust to increase power and probably changes the valve spring. He probably has ruined the regulator.
This friend (installer and adjuster) wanted me to send him the gun (with no charge, I owe to him) and then we will see what has been done with it.
I will be back with the results ;)
Thanks again..

Well ... light at the end of tunnel at least.
Hope it all gets resolved quickly and at minimal expense.

Well,
I sent the gun to my friend (the installer of the reg) yesterday and today he disassembled the air tube and the valve today. And bang! The regulator is not mounted inside, it is moving freely inside the tube. Plus, it is not working properly, because of misuse.
The reg is not problem. At least it can be bought and installed again. But the connection point of the gun to the reg is worn because of overpressure, what my friend told me; and he explained what has the owner had to do with screwing the reg to the limit and thus damaged the gun but I could not understand. Consequently, I feel cheated cos we had no word with the seller (previous owner) with regard to any problem with the gun when buying it. My friend called him, hurled tons of curses, but in vain.
There is a crack on the reg connection part.

Now we're waiting for this cracked part, from Air Arms Company. Don't buy anything from anybody u don't know well :(

Glad to hear the issue's getting some kind of positive treatment. Ouch, that may cost a few pretty pennies. Keep us posted.
But I have to make known my pet peeve. I HATE REGULATORS!!! Just one more thing to fail & cause all kinds of issues, when most unreg'd guns are as reliable as can be, and can be modded for better performance without them.
-
I think regulators are useful. 30 steady shots with 3 or 4 feet difference is great. But there must be a more simple way to install them. Inexpert people like this guy can botch up everything. Or instead of custom made regulators, the company itself can make a more reliable and endurable reg and install it during the production process. Weinrauch has such kind of a treatment if I'm not mistaken.

After 2 months, finally my s510 arrived and I had the chance to try it today. And the new result:

The target is 50 meters away. The airgun achieves stability between 140-185 bars for 30 clean shots. And my airgun on myshooting bench:

Thanks to my friend who has ordered the firing valve body, installing it along with his custom made regulator, and making other adjustments to my airgun. And thanks to members of this forum for their support :)

Glad you got it worked out. I have the same gun except in single shot (S500 FAC) and I got it from someone here on the forums and it has been brilliant. Mine doesn't have a reg, but the previous owner did the bstaley tune and I get over 100 shots in .177. I am curious though about your friends custom regulator. Do you have any more info on it or contact information for him? I am really happy with the gun but I do wonder if a regulator would make it even better.

OUTSTANDING !!!

Well, I haven't seen the reg, but it is a replica of altaros. That's all I know. You don't need to punch a hole on the air tube. An altaros will help you if it is compatible with s500

that is quite possibly the coolest shooting bench in existence :)

Haha... oh, man... I was thinking the same thing!
To the OP: I'm glad to see that all was fixed, in the end. It's nice to know that you had someone in your corner, trying to make things right. I love seeing the support this community provides for all members, regardless of location.
So when do we get to come over and shoot with you? My dream is to visit Turkey, so now I have an excuse: "Oh, Honey! We have to take the kids to Turkey! It's all about international air gun relations!"

Thanx, I am thinking of wrapping it up as a backpack. With a carbonfiber tank it will be lighter ;)

That's why I am still single :D Hoping to see u in Turkey ;)
