Title: Beeman R9 .20 OR .22? Vortek OR V-mach tune kit?
Post by: Jringe1109 on October 26, 2013, 12:54:13 PM
Hey guys,
Ive wanted an R9 in .20 cal for probably 5 years. Ive finally decided to make the purchase before the beeman R9 is possibly discontinued. Not saying its going to happen but if it does id like to have one beforehand.
My question is .20 or .22? What will be the avg stock velocity in .20? Cant find much info on that other than straightshooters info which always seems to be somewhat off.
A .20 vs .22 with a vortek or vmach kit will produce what kind of fpe in .20 vs .22 lets say in .20 with 11.4 ftt and in .22 with jsp express 14.3?
Owners of each gun whats your personal experience?
Thanks
Jeremy

Here's the numbers from my R9 .20 with a Vortek PG2 installed

H&N 11.5 830 fps
JSB 13.7 757 fps

This is roughly 17.5 fpe. Hope this helps

Rico,
When you ordered your kit did you ask for a power tuned kit? Or is that just what the standard pg2 kit comes with spring wise? How does it shoot? Is it more hold sensative?

I just have the standard PG2 installed. The shot cycle is short and crisp. The twang is gone and it seems to cock a little easier too.  I didn't notice any change in the hold sensitivity. Also seems to be slightly more accurate. I'm getting one ragged hole at 35 yards with 5 shots. There is a noticeable difference with the PG2 installed

the .20cal is probably the optimal performer in the R9/Hw95 power plant for the size of it, but IMO I would not buy the 20cal because they seem to perform at their best with the Euro pellets Like the FTT's JSB's ::) to my knowledge their no U.S. manufactures other then Crosman that make a pellet in .20cal? and they only make a 14.3gn pellet in .20 >:( which is why I sold off all my .20cal rifles a few yrs ago, my point being if the world economy go's belly up you stuck with what is made here and IMO the 14.3gn 20cal pellets are way to heavy for that power plant ::) JMO if your wanting to shoot that weight of pellet the .22cal is the way to go due to pellet selection and their plenty full not so with the .20cals just my thoughts 8) :P

Thanks for the info guys. Im planning on stocking up like 10k of either the jsb's or the ftt's depending on which on shoots best. I really like the weight of the ftt's it seems like a perfect weight for the caliber. Being i already have an R1 in .22 and a d34 in .177 im covered for those calibers. The .20 just seems like it will be perfect with ftt's if theyre accurate. 830fps at 17.5fpe is my dream hunter/pester. And the .20 R9 is such a classic i dont think i can resist the urge anymore. If the world economy goes belly up i think we will all have bigger things to worry about than pellet selection lol. I think im going to place a pre-order with PA today.
Thanks
Jeremy

You might want to try the Beeman FTS pellets also. They are about the same weight at the H&N 11.4 but they might be more accurate for you

Niko,
Will do. Im debating now whether to get the 95 luxus for the open sight option. I like shooting pests with open sights. Especially HOSP's. I may flip a coin.

Hey Jeremy!! You're gonna love either one!!
I have a 98 in 177 with a PG2 kit. This gun is an absolute tack driver with lots of pellets and isn't hold fussy at all!! Solid as a rock and shoots right where you aim her!! Sweetest of triggers also!!
Some numbers after 6 - 7000 rounds.
Also a 50 yard 10 shot group.
Good luck bro!!

98 10 shot string JSB 8.4

Lo 906.6
Hi 910.5
Avg 908.4

Joe,
nice shooting. i hope mine cleans up nicely after i tune it. im going all out with the V-Mach kit. Now if PA would just get the rifle in stock i'd be a happy camper. i've found a few sites with the r9 in .20 in stock, but theyre smaller sites that ive never heard of. idk how comfortable i am plopping down 500$ to a site ive never used before. rather order from PA, ive had good experience with them and they said that they would hand pick one with nice wood grain for me which is a plus. although if my custom walnut stock turns out good from michael in california i may have another made for the R9. time will tell.
