Title: Mange yote pup takes it hard
Post by: chancers on October 22, 2013, 04:29:19 PM
Here's a gnarly looking yote pup that went to the bait station in the middle of the day.  This may be anectdotal, but I think diseased or mangy coyotes may have something wrong with their survival skills.  The mangy ones just aren't skittish.

This yote set off the motion sensor around noon.  When I looked out the window, I saw a small yote milling around.

I ran and got my 25 caliber Condor, loaded in a 71 grain 7 ring Sure Fire slug and slowly opened the window.  The yote was oblivious.  It was quartering away from me with its head down.  The condor released the slug (around 112 fpe).  The slug hit the yote just behind the ear and exited out the top of its head.  Distance around 34 yards.

Slug entered behind right ear and exited out top of noggin.

Good thing it wondered into your yard and you put it down.  It could have spread the disease to other animals.  Good shooting!  What happened to the videos from your trail cam? :)  I really liked those.

What diameter surefire slugs are you using (.251, 252", .253")?  It looks like your Condor is very accurate with them (or you have a good batch, hehe).  IRCC the .251-0.252" work best with a Condor, right?  I think 0.253" is more for Sumatra and Korean guns?

That is one big mess. I'll bet he had a killer headache for a split second with that shot.
Nice going. Keep at 'em

Thanks for posting this. Great shot first of all. I'm looking into getting a Condor as my first PCP and this shows what it can do. Are those Sure Fire accurate at long range? I want to get 75+ FPE and be accurate out to 100 yards.

That's how you vent the dome.  Good shooting and glad you took that sick pup out.

Yes, I need to get the trail cams back in action.  I kind of took the summer off from pesting.  The fox nutters are now good sized (especially the males).  I think it's going to be an interesting season for night time pesting.

The sure fires are 0.251.  Problem is that my 25 caliber LW barrel measures around 0.254.  Accuracy and consistency could be better.

Originally, I was going to have Dyotat machine me a new 25 caliber Condor (new bushings, shroud, valve, barrel, etc).  But, I decided to go with the 0.257 Condor (with new valve, cocker, 26 inch TJ barrel, bushings, barrel guided hammer, and new shroud).   I figure that Doug's 0.257 Condor build is proven and reliable long distance shooter. Also, I think it is easier to find 0.257 slugs/cast bullets than the 0.25 caliber slugs/cast bullets.  I wish I had more time to cast my own ammo.
