Title: Crosman Recruit mods
Post by: rangerfredbob on October 03, 2013, 04:52:26 PM
$38.22 investment in this beast other than my time with the valve and piston, $25 for the gun, $5 for the pellet clips, and $8.22 for the rifled barrel. At 10 pumps it is quite loud and fairly difficult to pump, it's pushing some air. I'm going to leave it open sights for hunting as that is the main reason I put this thing together, the pellet clips are nice for that use.

The list of mods on this if anyone wants to do something similar (list applies to most Crosman pumpers)
-home made flat top piston with pin sticking into the valve port to take up more head space
-home flat topped valve, O ring lip reduced to .015" or thereabouts, same on the piston, also drilled a hole in the side of the valve and tube to pin them together
-bent the trigger spring to lighten the pull, not a bad trigger but I'm not honed to target triggers...
-swapped on a rifled barrel to make better use of the hopped up powerplant.

That target is 4 shots each offhand at 5 yards, 3 pumps, open sights, Crosman field pointed pellets, not bad for it's first quick groups, you can call the groups my fault, I did all that in about 30 minutes... I'll move the windage over a bit but call it good otherwise being that was 5 yards and only 3 pumps...

Now I basically have a Tempest with black stock and flat top piston/valve, under $40 is still cheaper than buying what I got :)

Took a starling yesterday with 5 pumps at 15yards or so, was right on target off hand and went through... I think it will meet up to my expectations :). I wanted to go after a dove but didn't think I could make a 50 yard shot with it... was the only gun I had with me at the time (the 30-06 would have been too much for a powerline shot :))

Just an update on this guy, I just went out in the back yard in the 30 minutes of daylight I had and put up my spinner at around 30 yards, top is 1" I believe bottom 1.5", shooting offhand without a rest of any form I hit the bottom target about 1 in 3 shots, top about 1 in 4, not too bad for barely being able to see the targets that were painted dark red...

It dumps out all it's air at 10 pumps, holds 3-4 pumps worth of air at 15 pumps, not bad, the valve can stay like that...

Don't shoot the chrony... ;)

You're doing some pretty neat stuff...

Thanks, I'm happy with this project, not every project works out how you think it should :)
