After testing the 24" crosman barrel I installed on my 2289g for a few days, I removed it today in favor of the stock 12" barrel. It was just to dang long for my target shooting I do from the window to my left from where I'm sitting now while I'm on my talking picture box. I have a 2 and 1/2" potted meat can hanging with a string from a tree branch about 40 feet from where I sit. With four pumps, I tear it a new orifice. ;)I'm using a 5moa red dot for aiming. At crosman prices I may order a new 16 or 18" barrel for a try. I'm still thinking about getting the flat top piston kit for more powder. :-\

Almost forgot. I put the stock transfer port and seal away with the stock hammer spring. I made a new transfer port using 1/4" hard poly tubing with a 11/64th id. Don't know if it helped or not, but it still works. 8)

dont order another barrel... just cut and recrown the one you have. put it back on the gun and then mark with tape the "perfect length" (to me is 14 to 15 inches, so it is not unwieldy with a LDC. or 18 to 20 with out.) remember that every inch or so adds about 3 to 4 fps on a healthy stock gun, but that all goes out of the window with a flat top setup. i got my kayak gun to shoot 720 fps with CP prems at 40 pumps and a 20 incher. is just not fun to pump that much. so now its just a tuned 15 incher shooting 540 on 12 pumps.... practical...

I agree with lillysdad. Just cut it and recrown.

I am curious, what FPS you are getting with each barrel lenght ?
-
Right, I read about cutting a barrel down, and I have all the needed tools.4" side grinder with cut off disk and cheap HF drill press I bought for AK building should get me started. But for $20 shipped, I could have a third barrel. I have a 1377 pistol I might convert to .22. Thought about making it a carbine. :D

but if not you'll have a 2 feet long blued cane that will be cluttering your work bench... plus crosman gives you set lenghts... you could have the only 17 and 7/8 inch barrels in airgundom... think fully custom.lol. plus what ever crown you give it will be 10 times better than the original crown... and they look cooler without that little divet in top for the front sight.

I did see that it would be cheaper to buy and cut a 24" barrel from Crosman than buy a 18" barrel from venders.
When I get bored again I may cut it to 16 or 18.

I don't have one of those meters to check fps. It would be nice if some of us locals could meet for a shoot. I still may hotrod my 2289 looking to get 700fps out of her.

With more push on the pellet (flat tops), it might be time to revisit the 24" barrel. Regards, Tom

Also remember, if ordering from Crosman they will not sell you an 18 unless it's for a custom gun order. I tried to order one today for a 1322 and they said no, just as others here have reported. Longer lengths they will sell you are 14.5 and 24.

Really?
I ordered an 18" 2400-102 barrel today along with a steel breech and a 2300-121 muzzle brake for my first 2289 mod. I must admit to some inbred regional prejudices; however, the cordiality and helpfulness of the guy I spoke with at Crosman this morning was most impressive - to say the least. The price, including shipping, was most agreeable as well.

I ordered an 18" not long ago and it's sitting pretty on my 2250.

Guess it depends who you get, they told me no, as they have told many others who have posted. I spoke with a man, but forget his name.

It helps to have the part number of what you want ;D

I believe It was Cameron that responded to my e-mail and took my order over the phone. Seem like a nice young man. 8)

+1 for Cameron. I've ordered from him before and he was great to deal with. In fact everyone there is really nice.

i'd order another barrel. I had a 24 inch barrel for a while and cut it down to 16. i regretted it after a while because i didnt have a 24 inch barrel to compare the two anymore. my honest opinion: order something like six of everything the next time you order parts from crosman ;D

if you have a smart phone, there is an app that .. well .. works sometimes for me, seems to work better for others. sometimes mine says i shot at 4000fps, which i know is not correct. othertimes it shows numbers close to what my chrony says

I just recently was given an 853/953 (barely functioning) it had been living in a pickups cargo box (with concrete tools and such. It was in rough shape.
Well got him shooting and zeroed for 20 yards accurate( quarter size groups relaxed effort) at 25 yards grouping tells holdover is about 1.5" and at 30 yards 3.5".
My gut said fps was in hi 300s to low 400s I said about 425 in my intro thread...
point is you can download download chair gun and use my method to get a good idea of fps.
I did last night and ballistics show 395 fps or so... (still more work to do many shoot 450-475 stock) I am going for 550 or fps or so.
It will not show you shot to shot speed variations but it will let you have a better understanding of your rifles trajectory at any given point. such as knowing hold over/under before shooting at 10 & 20 yards when zeroed for 30.
Of course then you have the fun and shoot to verify...

Another computer method, as a chono, is to download Audacity plug in a couple of mics with 20ft or so cords and a bit of simple math...
