Title: scope for my trail all-weather NP .22??
Post by: jmvargas on September 28, 2013, 12:07:12 PM
....based on what i've read to date about the centerpoint scope that comes with my trail all-weather np .22 it seems it's hit or miss on whether the scope will hold up with extended use...

......am not too worried about it yet as i've only shot about 120 shots with it but JUST IN CASE i would need a replacement scope in the future i have a bushnell elite 4200 6-24x40 currently mounted on my ruger 10/22 and a redfield revenge 6-18x42 as a spare..

would any of these 2 scopes work well on the benjamin??

i would also appreciate any suggestions on moderately-priced(up to $300)scopes for my gun....

thank you for reading this and any replies..

Right now I've got a Center Point 4-16x40 on my Trail and it's going well but I've only put about 200 shots down it with that scope. If this fails I'll exchange it for another and mount the new one on a 22LR then try a different brand, probably a Hammers 3-9x40.

Proper mounting and keeping it in place, will be a number 1 to keeping it healthy.  Scope creep is not goood at all.  4 screw scoperings are cheap, and stronger gripping to the scope and rail.  Look at the UTG/Leapers line, of 4 screw rings.  If you have a Weaver/Picatinny rail, you're good to go.
Secondly, ensure that you are keeping your scope as "close to optical center", as you can.  Droop is common with breakbarrels, and cranking the vertical adjustment up/dn 50% or more, isn't helpful to the health of the erector tube.  It's the heart.  You might check out PA's videos on scopes and mounting in their "Airgun Academy" section.  It'll give you insight on how they work, and how important little details can be.
Edit:  Watching/searching thru these videos is a great way to gain a little insight to the airgun world.  Lotsa good stuff ;)

My Center Point did good for about 250 shots. I noticed the scope had slid all the way back in the mounts. I re centered it and used loctite on the screws. It was after I did this that my windage reticle would no longer adjust. It didn't matter what I did, it would not move. Crossman said I could send it back for a replacement, which I will do just to have a spare.

I have ordered a replacement scope. I went with the Hawke 4-9X40.  It is currently back ordered but I expect it to be shipped in the next week. It cost $160 and got good reviews on this forum. I will update on the performance when it comes it.

I am shooting a Benjamin Trail NP XL .22.

Take a look at this chart. Maybe it'll answer your question.

Does the MFG specify they are rated for springers?  If not, try to contact them and ask.  Some will say that all scopes made today will handle the reverse recoil but I trusted the maker and bought one that was advertised for a magnum springer.  2,000 shots later and I'm glad it did.
