Title: Marauder vs Discovery?
Post by: TREX on September 23, 2013, 03:40:19 PM
Anyone have both to compare and contrast?

Also what about the Hill pump vs the Benjamin pump? Or should I just get a tank?

I'll make this real easy for you. Buy the Mrod, Hawke scope and CF tank. Total 1200+ dollars

Easy, see.

Disco  2kpsi  easier to pump up  - repeater breech possible but expensive

MRod - repeater - big plus in my mind

both shoot well from what i have read here

tank is a great addition, pumping could get old quickly though having a pump as a backup might be nice

I have a disco and have had it about 3 years and it is a great rifle.I have put the double kit, mrod trigger ,bnm breech and shroud and a bigger valve on the .22.A few weeks ago i got a mrod in .25 and it is a great rifle out of the box,the barrels for the .25 are supposed to be made by green mountain. What I like about the mrod is out of 6 types of pellets it shot 3 of them really good. Now my disco really likes the cphp's which i can get at the local chinamart for $9 a tin.I would go with the tank or the hill pump.

I have both.

177 Discovery - Mac1 tuned, added a B&M brass trigger, TKO LDC  and insanely accurate.  Light.

25 cal Marauder - Greg Davis tuned. Insanely accurate. Heavy but hits like a hammer.

All depends on what you plan to do with it.

+1 for the discovery, I just don't think you get twice the gun from a Marauder that warrants 2X the price.  I've had a discovery for over a year now and it's a darling, single loading pellets achieves higher accuracy anyhow and pumping the discovery is a breeze.  If I had a Marauder I'd be single loading it to.  Pumping easily however is a different story.  Sounds like money is not a concern to you though so I'd just get a tank then.  Basically they're both great but I've heard out the box accuracy can vary in the marauders.  Never heard anybody have accuracy concerns with a disco.

I have both rifles also. Both have a great power and both are super quiet.Especially after Norm worked on Disco and shrouded it with new breach also. Both my Disco and M-rod very accurate rifles. So id say go for the caliber you that you would use the most. Both of mine now holds 3000 psi instead of the 2k it came with.Awesome shooters for the price.Discos have more mods out then the M-rod.As far as pumps, id go with Hill.I use a tank and compressor but the Hills are built better imo.

I used to have a Disco .22 and am now shooting a Marauder .177.

The Disco is a light, slender gun that is excellent for carry in the field.  Its sweet spot max pressure is about 1850 psi, this allows a 3000 psi SCUBA tank to be used.  If the 3000 tank is hot filled to 3000, it will cool to about 2700 psi, so you have almost a thousand psi available to use with a Disco.

Noise is high with a Disco but is very easily reduced.

Accuracy can be very good but my Disco had some point of impact shifting.

A Marauder is bigger and heavier than a Disco.  Sweet spot max pressure is about 2500 psi on the one I shoot, this is too high for a 3000 psi SCUBA tank, so now I use a 4500 psi SCBA tank with a fill gizmo from Joe Brancato.

There is not much muzzle noise from the Marauder but in a quiet place you hear a lot of ping from the air tube.  I'll probably get one of the commercially made de-pingers, it costs about $15 including shipping.

For shooting critters, the repeater magazine on the M-Rod is excellent but the Disco is easier to carry.

The Marauder has the better trigger but the Disco trigger is a good field trigger.

The only good solution to the "which one" dilemma is to own both.  The real question is "which first", comparison shooting is lots of fun, anyway.

Those two sorta like comparing 2 cars, both will go 100 mph, both will carry 4 bodies etc ....  ???

One is quite, other noisy ( M-rod - Disco ) Shroud, No shroud
One easy to vary speed and tune, other not so much ( M-rod - Disco ) 3 way tune settings - 1 way
One has a snappier engine with a better accelerator ( M-rod - Disco ) Higher pressure and Trigger
One is a Slim trim easy packer, other Bigger & heavier clunky stock ( Disco - M-rod )

** They both can be accurate, punch holes in cans or dispatch vermin.

WANT Light and slim for hiking willing to have limited shot count ? .... DISCO
WANT more power potential, More shots & willing to pack some xtra weight .... M-rod

I have had both for quite some time and yes it depends on what your useage would be. If you pump and don't mind the single shot, the Disco is the way to go. I pumped both until I got a SCBA tank. Disco was a breeze. Mrod, not so much. If weight is an issue, the Disco wins. If funds are an issue, the Disco wins.
I use the Disco for closer range stuff and when I need to pump or the tank is low. The rest of the time I shoot the Mrod as it has me hooked on that .25 hammer!!
Guess I didn't help much. Like I said, I have both. Bought the Disco first and then the Mrod. Still modding the daylights out of both when time permits.
Good luck making a choice. LOL
Regards
Ray

Thanks Guys.   Good information but it aint getting any easier.

What ever I get I am sure I will wonder if I shoulda gotten the other.  There were some West TN posters on here so maybe I'll look them up when time permits and see if they have one I could shoot.
