You own your home and the land it sits on,but how deep in the ground does your ownership go?

Depends on if you own the "mineral rights".

What are you planning?  Digging a basement maybe?  It might vary in different areas but if the city or county wanted to build a tunnel under your house no matter how deep, they would need to agree with you on an easement so in that respect you own all the way down to the center of the earth I believe.

But yes mineral rights are a different issue.

One thing I always wanted was a junky little house up top for the assessor and a huge underground house for me.  The assessor does not need to see the inside if you don't let him.. Well I got the junky house..  lol

You may own the home.  You may own the land.  But do you really own either, or are you leasing them from the government?  If you don't keep up your payments (property taxes and irrigation assessments) the state will eventually take ownership.

  Agreed.

Apathy and complacency will ruin us all.

When leasing your land for mineral exploration, you can specify a stated depth below which you may lease to someone else.  For example, you can lease to one company down to 10,000 feet for oil exploration.  You can then lease from 10,000 to 30,000 for gas exploration.

Feel free to correct me if you have better information; but this is my understanding from past lease activities.

sadly all you own is the paper the deed is written on . and I seen some law suits over oil wells drilled at an angle into another's property , suckin oil out of non oil leased land when I was workin in the Oklahoma and texas oil fields . now give this thought ... water doesn't stop at your line nor does crude oil. on the other side of the line a well is suckin crude out of the ground . your non drilled land is getting its water and / or crude lowered and your not getting any $$$ from it either . is that stealing ? think that 1 over a little

Robert, my first college roommate majored in Petroleum Engineering and he was writing a paper on "Directional Drilling".  At that time the science of "Directional Drilling" was in it infancy but gaining popularity at a fast rate.  The geologists quickly picked up on the idea and started looking at from where the oil was being taken.  Yes, "some law suits over oil wells drilled at an angle into another's property , suckin oil out of non oil leased land" (as you stated it) have succeeded and big settlements have been awarded.  Sadly, I have not been a party to ANY of these suits and that is why I have such a SMALL ARSENAL OF AIR RIFLES.  (Just making sure the mods see this and realize that it is air gun related.)

Meanwhile the tax cheats in the IRS never have to worry about harassment and losing their property. Double standard ya think?

Gil - you said something about the tax cheats in the IRS never having to worry about harassment or losing their property.  What exactly does that mean?  The IRS is a federal taxation system dealing with various forms of personal and corporate income taxation.  Property taxes are generally on a county (or in Louisiana parish) level.  If federal agents own property in states they do need to worry about whether they've paid their property taxes.  The only state that's not a state in the continental United States is the District of Columbia and I have no idea how things work there.

Thanks in advance for any clarification.

The tax cheat head of the IRS for example doesn't have to worry about audits, property confiscation or jail time like the rest of us do if we don't pay taxes, nor do other tax cheats there. My mother was behind $300 on her taxes for only 1 month recently which had never happened before and you should have seen the threats that she got from the IRS treating her like a criminal as if she was chronically delinquent, yet the tax cheats in the IRS can owe over $100k and get away with it. That's not even considering all our money they waste on pure bs yet those real criminals treat us like the criminals. They are disgusting leeches that need to be done away with.
