Title: Well... I finally jumped and have one on it's way
Post by: snakebite4767 on August 15, 2013, 04:55:19 PM
After agonizing for weeks over which gun to buy, I just could not take it any more...  I needed some relief, so I finally started thinning the herd down so that I could come to a final decision.

I researched every web page I could find and talked to every knowledgeable person that would take my call.  With a great deal of effort, I was finally able to narrowed my choices down to three guns.

1) Walther LGV Master Ultra Air Rifle    2) Weihrauch HW95 Luxus   3) Air Arms TX200 MkIII air rifle

They all received top scores on every review that I could find. Each of them was in the Power Band that I decided upon, and all had a wood stock with nice fit and finish, and they were all available.

Cost ranged from $450 to $700. I wanted a gun to shoot off hand at "Critters", to take on walks through the woods and also one that I could use to target shoot from a bench.

My new HW95 Luxus should be here in a few days.  Each gun had it's strong points, but the HW95 seemed to have a balance of the qualities that I was looking for.  Though cost was not a major consideration in my quest, it turned out that my choice was the least expensive of the three. This allows me to put a generous "Starter" into the pot for the time when I once again come down with a case of the "Air Gun Pox"... OOOOOH how dreadful! ;)

gratz,

Remember the first thing you will need to do with any new air rifle is clean it, I am not sure if it is as bad with the higher end guns but I am sure it won't hurt....

I got it in 22 cal... I want to knock the Snot outa some Ground Squirrels.

I also bought a scope for this gun.... Hope it is OK... UTG 3-9 Mil-Dot RGB Illum.

Since this gun does not come with a Muzzle Brake, do you think there would be any benefit in putting one on? If so..... Point me in the right direction. I'm not sure, but I believe the barrel is 5/8" (16mm).

I put one of JM's 10" muzzle weights on mine. You will need to file the front sight grooves slightly. He should be getting in some 6" ones shortly.

I guess it depends on what kind of benefit you're looking to find. Is this going to be babied, or see a lot of field-use? My guns are for hunting, so I put heat-shrink around the end of my XS barrel because I didn't want to get my sweaty hands on the steel, and I didn't want to mark it with my wedding band. If the crown isn't recessed, then a brake can serve as extra protection. If a gun is properly tuned or broken-in, the whole aspect about vibration reduction becomes a moot point. If you want it to look different, well, then there ya go. Haha.

I've been shooting competitions longer than I care to admit, and hunting even longer than that... a gun is tool, and I use them as such. That does not mean that I don't take care of them and enjoy them in some cases as a piece of Artwork. My thought about the Muzzle Brake was mainly to add some weight forward... I may not need it. I really don't know, but I'm not so sure that most Muzzle Brakes on these Air Rifles do much in regards to redirecting expelled gas. I suspect that their real purpose is to add weight forward,  provide a better grip for Barrel Breakers and of course, add "Sex Appeal" to the Rifle. I saw one that even had Electric Blue inside the fake slots!

Congrats on your choice. I'm also considering the HW95 (Beeman R9).  The other two AGs you listed would have been about 10.5 lbs (assuming a 16oz scope). The HW95, about 8.5 lbs with scope  (not sure what your scope weighs). Just to say that at the end of the day, I'd rather lug 8.5 lbs through the bush than 10.5 lbs. Quality all the way around with any of these AGs.
