Title: Motorhead's Fabricated Sidewheel
Post by: Chaffyn on August 11, 2013, 11:59:25 AM
Sure would like more info on this baby.

Looks like it might be PVC?

For the life of me I can't figure out what the silver cap thingie is?

How is the wheel attached to the turret?

Simple question, but I'm sorta befuddled!!!

Ok ok ....

WHITE body of wheel started at a 1/4" thick x 5" disk of poly scrap from the local Interstate plastics salvage bin.
BLACK outer ring cut from the flange of a ABS pipe fitting.

Using a compass off a center dot drew a couple radius circles onto disk. Then using dividers plotted out equal spaces and center punched there location.

*Chucked disk up in the lathe and accurately placed the mounting hole in the middle of disk.

Off to the drill press using a hole saw punched in the holes where marked around perimeter.

Next ... Utilizing the shoulder within the ABS turned the poly disk O.D. for a light press fit against it.
Used flex CA glue to adhere it in place.

Now holding the disk by the center hole with ID lathe jaws turned the OD down, Ring width down and narrowed the disk width to @ 1/8" minus mount area and at OD where attached.
Deburred holes etc .... DONE with wheel.

Hubs to mount on scopes SF knobs made from Delrin or Aluminum attaching to knob with four 4-40 grub screws (*  Having plastic weed eater line under screw for Non Scratch * ) Center of hub has a 10-32 hole for the retention screw/cap to pinch and hold the wheel in place.
Silver disk is just a cover plate that is the pinch holding wheel to hub which rests on a shoulder slightly shallower than width of the white center disk.

Love this design because you can easily Fine Tune wheel position if scaling is a tad out of synch with pellet POI by loosening side plate and rotating wheel on the hub.  :P

So there ya go ... how to made a Sub $10 side wheel ... IF you have a lathe and some time  ;)

Have fun !

Many tanx for the full report.  It's a gorgeous wheel.  Light-weight, too.  When Palone finally
makes it to my horseshoe pits and I come away with a wad of cash I'll ask you to make me one.
I'm not holding my breath.  Joe talks a good game, but it's only ringers that count!

Since I usually work with hatchet and sledge hammer I won't be attempting this wheel!!!

Right now I'm messing with a PVC cap and a steering coupling gasket to see what happens.
Tomorrow I'm getting out my chain saw and going to work on it.
