Title: Anyone running a pg2 vortek kit in R1 or HW80?
Post by: scooterman on August 10, 2013, 12:28:17 AM
I'm thinking a Vortek kit or a kit from ARH would take care of my twangy R1 Laser.  I took this rifle apart yesterday and cleaned all the 20 year old copper colored and dried lube off of everything.  Spring was heavily crusted in this stuff.  After cleaning the spring it has a nickel finish to it and was perfectly straight and the seal seemed ok.  Lubed everything but still have a loud twang though not as bad as before cleaning.  Not sure if I used enough lube around top hat and spring guide which are both metal.  Shot the gun today at 30 and 50 yds and shot some nice groups.  Was rainy so I did not have a chance to chrony it.  I want to keep the same power level that I have. Would just changing the spring remove the twang?

I've had both in my R1 the Vortek is in there now and will probably stay. I ordered it dry with no lube and did a full Krytox lube during install, smooth no twist during shot cycle and throws a 13.8 JSB .20 with a punch. I found the ARH kit to shoot pretty hot which was throwing off my accuracy. Same thing with the new spring in my Anschutz 335 shooting a little hot also going to clip a coil or two.

I've used both in my HW80 .22cal carbine and IMO the JM power kit is the only way to go! JMO ;D :P

I just did one; an older San Rafael vintage R1 in .177 with the GRT spring and JM's "custom tophat" , spacers, and a Vulcan seal. I didn't buy the whole kit and reused the existing rear guide. Lots of polishing, including the new spring, and Ultimox for lube. It's shooting great; smooth and  very accurate @ 850 fps avg. right out of the rebuild. I'm guessing the velocity will creep up a bit, but if it doesn't that's fine too. I considered the Vortek kit but wanted to keep this one more traditional I guess. tk
