hey all. ive been reading up on these pcp rifles and would like to get some feedback on there accuracy/ longevity. i own a trail xl in 22 caliber but would like to find something my nephew could hunt with as the trail is super heavy and a bear for a 12 year old to pump. i was wondering if the discoveries or pneumas are decent guns for the money or are they too cheap. i cant afford 1000.00 for an air gun and these sound like a breeze to shoot accurately. i appreciate any feedback and /or suggestions.
thanks

Discovery is a great little rifle but don't forget, you need a way to fill it. The package with pump is under 5 bills but you will need to pump it, and the pumps themselves fail more than the rifle. They are still a great deal. Discovery is a little loud for suburban backyard practice, but there are accessories online that can help with that.
I like to fill from a tank. IF you have a tank (outside of the $500 budget), then I think the Marauder is more powerful and versatile.
-
For a 12 year old, I'd go with the Disco. It'll fit a smaller shooter better, and is quite a bit lighter than the Pneuma. And unless they've changed a lot in the last couple of years, the Pneuma definitely needs a fair bit of work out of the box to be decent.
Most of the other under $500 PCP's I can think of are Korean guns, nice, but up there in the power and noise category. They can not so good air like crazy, tend to have large air cylinders that make pumping a real chore, and the repeaters can be fiddly to load. They also tend to be larger, heavier rifles.
You know, there are plenty of lower powered springers that are still very competent hunters, and would be easily handled by a 12 year old. The Diana 34 comes to mind, add a Vortek kit and it's a very easy shooter, and well under your $500 budget. My .177 does 14.5 fpe with Dynamic tin pellets and is the proverbial tack driver. Later.

If hes going to pump it I would say Disco
-
Introduce him to a springer, he will learn more, long time gain vs short time gain
-
The Bejiman Marauder pcp pistol/rifle with included shoulder stock would be perfect. MidwayUSA has them listed for about $380.00, but they are not in stock yet.
-
I'd go with the disco/pump combo. The disco is light, powerful, accurate and very easy to pump up. As for the pump,, just go slow and give it a rest after every 50 pumps or so and the pump will be fine. If it does seize up it's a simple matter to send it SunOptics and they will rebuild the pump for $20 and the shipping is included.
I think the disco is one of the best bangs for the buck out there in PCP's. I have one in .177 and one in .22 and I absolutely love both rifles.
Just my opinion, others opinions will of course vary.

Hi Ricky and welcome to the gta. I would agree with everyone that the discovery is the way to go. It is sized well for a smaller shooter, while providing great power and accuracy. And it does it with a lower fill pressure than anything else. I think they run about $370.00 with the pump or if you watch this forums classifieds section, plus google "airgun classifieds" and you'll find several other sites that have classifieds sections. Watch these and you could easily come out under $300.00 with all required components in good/perfect condition. I see these slightly used guns sold several times a month with certainty. The pneuma is much larger than you would think and the marauder is a bit to big too, i think for a 12 year old. Truly for the money, a disco is your best bet.
If you don't want to pump and have a dive shop near you, or a fire dept willing to fill your tank, you can purchase a 3200psi steel 88cf tank with a cutoff valve for about $150.00 and a fill valve(kingman) is another $65.00. You would get many many fills off this setup, if your filling a disco. Let us know what you decide, J

im 6'3 and have long arms and the disco is just a might to short for me, but i fill from a scuba tank so i dont worry about pumping. i got the gun and a 3x9 leapers scope off of PA and im loving it, gun, scope, pellets and rings came in at 305$
im sure you can get a fill valve for 60-75 range and then all you need is a tank.
for christmas i am getting a tko22 6.5in muzzle brake and the qbmag 10 round rotary mag (yes i have .177, and yes nutters and anything that is being a pest hates me now)
i think a 12 year old will love this gun, but keep reminding him, this is a weapon that can do some damage

NGOTB, get a butt-pad or spacer for your stock!
I vote Discovery also. Have one, in .22 and it is a surprisingly sweet rifle...really!
There's nothing wrong with springers, have and had many, but there's just something magical getting to watch your shot (through a scope) trek from muzzle to target, with a PCP.
With the money you save getting a Discovery, you could get a fair springer too, and have the best of both worlds; EZ PCP shooting, or Real Man springer shooting.

How about the Benji Katana it cost $100 more but you get a nice trigger and a choked barrel so it should
be more accurate. You only pump to 2000 lbs so it's easy to pump also. Its kinda in the middle of Marauder
and Disco.

yeah but there isnt a magazine rig for the katana, trust me, im fast at reloading pellets quick. But a magazine, even though self indexing will be greatly appreciated
and i just love my disco too much to sell it for a katana hahah
-
I will have a Mrod soon to match my pistol, but you will go way over the price you set getting set up for PCP's. I'm with the guy's here get the Disco, an really it's pretty easy to pump up to 2,000 psi with a hand pump(it get's hard up at around 2,400 to the 3,000 mark). I have never figured out how they sell that combo so cheap as the Crosman/Benji pump alone sell's for $180 to $200?
-
Jay, they not so good-you-in with that sweet deal, knowing you will upgrade to a repeating rifle of theirs. The pump is just icing on the cake, with a 2500 psi fill with the Marauder.
Sure, it's a bit more of a workout on the Marauder with the pump, but doable!
I just HAD to have the combo. What a deal!
I also put myself back on the Marauder waiting list at Pyramyd. Got over my little hissy, about the Marauder being backordered.
Hope 3rd time is the charm, as delivery of those gems has been put back 2 times. It's coming down to the wire, for the holiday season.

I'm sorry PA must have lowered the price of the Katana it is only $50 more than the Disco w/o the pump
the combo is 100 more. The Katana does not have open sites so you would have to buy a scope. The
Disco is 5lbs and Katana is 6 lbs. and Marauder is 7.5 lbs. I'm sure the 12 year old will have fun no matter
witch one you get him.

You can extend the pull length (butt to trigger) of your Disco with a simple slip-on recoil pad of this sort, although I have seen far cheaper versions that might be kinder to your wallet.

Here are two cheaper versions:

Given the diminutive dimensions of the Disco stock, you would probably be best served with the small size versions of these slip-on pads, but it wouldn't hurt to measure the butt dimensions before ordering.
I'm 6'4", so I understand having to deal with undersized products.
;)

haha very nice thank you sir

NGOTB, sorry to hijack the thread, but here is your Discovery breech that uses Marauder magazines:

Thanks for all the feedback guys. thinking Ill probably go with a discovery. doesn't cost alot and should last awhile. He's shot my xl and my neighbors rws but seems to have trouble holding them steady. i think hes flinching as he pulls the trigger. maybe a pcp will make him more accurate and increase his interest. i understand that these can be filled with nitrogen from a welding tank. where can i get an adapter for this?
thanks
ricky

thanks rider, i have seen that picture in a few other threads and it does look pretty sweet
and you can get teh adaptor off PA or pretty much any other site. its usually under PCP accesories, i got mine for 65 bucks but that was 4 years ago and i dont remember where
