Title: Silk purses and sows ears
Post by: JW Walker on August 03, 2013, 07:46:55 PM
I had been looking at getting a break barrel .22, I've got 2 Anschutz .177 well one is a Crosman 6500 same thing, and a Magnum 335, TX 200, FWB 124, 2 FX Tarantulas .177 &.22 an assortment of Crosman 140"s and 180's ,400. So I convinced myself to buy a XS25 .22 factory stock instead of spending the money on a RWS34 seeing as I do my own work and new no matter what I bought I'd be into anyway.
Gun arrived I cleaned the barrel checked the stock screws, cocked it and put a JSB 15.89gr pellet in it and fired it down range, I never knew you could get that much noise and vibration out of a air rifle not to mention recoil and slapped my face real good. I did not expect a FWB or Anschutz cycle out of it but this was not good, hence the sows ear part. So apart it comes clean everything well debur everything, make a delrin tophat cut the spring guide so the tophat can be longer, put a used Anz 335 spring in button the piston give it a proper lube job black tar spring. Lube the seal with silicon grease and the piston with moly, put another screw in the trigger so it actually has 2 stages, touch up the crown and this is what I got 580 fps, Ex of 9fps, std dev 3 fps, with JSB 15.89, over 10 shots 11.87 Ft lbs.
voila!Silk purse, good shot cycle, easy cocker with good energy.

Amazing how you can transform a sows ear into a silk purse, isn't it?...:) When CDT and I used to do pro tunes this was generally the case after we were done..:) Most of the air guns we tuned were diamonds in the rough..:)
Great story and thanks for sharing.

That is a great story!  I just finished my first repair and tune on my D34, and now I'm thinking a Ruger Blackhawk (D34 clone and essentially the same as your XS25) would make a perfect project for my next one.  BTW, welcome to the GTA! ;D

How many pieces was your spring in? How did it turn out?

The last 2 or 3 coils on the spring guide end were broken off, so it was in 2 pieces. >:(  The small section was wound up in the larger piece.  The repair and tune turned out great!  I posted the results in the German Gate.  Thanks Jesse for your feedback and help! ;D
