Looking to buy a Sidewinder 30 and my question is what is everyones preferrence in reticle, 1/2 mil dot 20x or the SR Pro?
http://www.hawkeoptics.com/hawke-sidewinder-30-sf-6-24x56-20x-mil-dot.html (http://www.hawkeoptics.com/hawke-sidewinder-30-sf-6-24x56-20x-mil-dot.html)
Or
http://www.hawkeoptics.com/hawke-sidewinder-30-sf-6-24x56-sr-pro.html (http://www.hawkeoptics.com/hawke-sidewinder-30-sf-6-24x56-sr-pro.html)
Also what size rings would I need for a Marauder? I have mediums now but would they work with a 56mm objective?
-
I am strictly a target shooter (out to 30 yards) and the 1/2 mil dot works great for me. My last three scopes have been Hawke with the 1/2 mil dot.

i love my sr pro reticle :)
its imo the perfect airgun/crossbow reticle,
being that the distance between the aim points increase as you go down the reticle.
(very closely matches the actual trajectory of a projectile, in that the distance between yardage markers increases as the distance increases)
you use the magnification ring to set the reticle to your guns trajectory.
so for my airguns,
with the magnification set around 10.5x
using a 50yd zero i get aim points in 10yd increments out to 150yds :)
and with my scorpyd crossbow set at 5x with a 20yd zero i get aim points in 5yd increments out to 70yds
its nice not having to keep a range card showing where each mil dot hits,
just range your target and count down the aim points on the reticle till you get to your yardage,
simple and much quicker than mil dots.
oh and,
pm me if you want the number of a dealer that can get you that sidewinder for under $350 :)

You already gave it to me. Spoke with Dave today. Probably gonna order it in the next week or so. Saving my pennies since I am now unemployed and this hobby or ripping through my body like a plague

Last four scopes where the 1/2 mil dot.

I've got two Hawke Sidewinders with both reticles, both bought used within the last month. Just got my SR Pro version this week & I'll take it over the mil dot version any day! No contest. I'll only be buying Hawkes with the SR Pro reticle from now on. Actually looked at a couple of other scopes with similar reticles, christmas tree, & I always come back to the Hawke. Just far better than anything else I've found so far.
Good luck.

As i told, the "20x mil dot" votes are from people im sure than didnt looked trought the new SR PRO.
I think Im gonna try the SR Pro. Here is what I was thinking
http://www.hawkeoptics.com/hawke-sidewinder-30-sf-4-16x50-sr-pro.html (http://www.hawkeoptics.com/hawke-sidewinder-30-sf-4-16x50-sr-pro.html)
Now what size scope rings? Will this fit in medium height Leapers I already have or do I need high ones? The UTG scope I have mounted now is a 44mm objective and there is room between the scope and the barrel
-
I have used both Hawke's reticles and I much prefer the SR Pro.
As far as rings I used Hawke HK6162. I about 3/16 clearance on my MROD.

Any problems with the Hawke rings? I read somewhere here someone had problems with them? He never gave numbers though so maybe they were the sport rings not the match?
-
I know how to use Mildots, so the 1/2 Mildot just meant more precision to the standard. I don't know about what 20x means, but I do know that it is 1/2Mil @ 10x, so maybe that's what they're talking about. Nonetheless...Mildots for both axis.

No problems. Both sets are on PCPs so I really don't expect problems.

It's just a 1/2mildot then. That's what I correctly reckoned.

So I ordered the Sidewinder 30 in 4-16x50 with the SR Pro reticle. When I gets here and mounted I will post pictures mounted on the Mrod.

Good choice. Great scope for the money.

Mounted it last night with a quick sight in in my basement. Still need to play with the eye relief and sight it in in my backyard. I now need to go buy a different rifle case because the "dang" turrets are too high and hit the top of my vertical rifle case.

Here ar some pucture with it all mounted love. Love this SR Pro reticle
-
so, if i understand it, if you use the SR Pro reticle, you have to set the magnification to a specific value.
does that mean that if you have a 6-20x scope, you are basically making it a single magnification scope or is there another magnification setting exclusive for the reticle and independent of the overall zoom capabilities?
-
Not if you use Hawke BRC program on your smart phone. Or you could make a couple of cheat sheets fro their computer progarm and carry them with you( or print 2 for inside the lens covers, this would give you 2 different magnification settings). But different magnification that are close are also close in yardages in the reticle. If you have never played with BRC it a pretty neat setup. You should try it and see. Especially with the SR Pro reticle
-
ok, so just like one mil-dot is only one-mil at a specific magnification.
i can see having a fixed setting for hunting....same power, same pellet, set the mag and forget.
for target shooting it becomes a little more complicated since you might want to use different mags/pellets/power at different distances, etc. but i now understand the concept. but if i have to look up what the holdover "line" means it isn't much different than knowing how many mil-dots to hold over....except for the fix and forget it hunting part. all you need is the range.
now if they only had swap-able reticles!
-
Not sure what you mean here. You can have many different settings (user files) in BRC and with a simple on click you can easily change pellets. If you haven't check out BRC you should. It is like Chairgun on steroids!!

its (imo) quicker to get the correct aim point on target with the SR without looking at a range card.
when shooting mil dot reticles,
after i range a target i look at my cheat sheet to find out where to hold,
with the sr i take the range and just count down the reticle by 10's no need for a range card.
heres a pic of 2 reticle views i did for a 150yd and also a 100yd max range.
1st one is the 150yd max at 9.9x, second is 100yd max at 23.5x both of these are for my mrod shooting jsb heavys at about 880fps.
so in theory,
if you left it on the 9.9 setting for general use and needed more magnification for target shooting,
you could go up to 23.5 and still have correct aim points without looking at range cards.
as for using different pellets youre on your own LOL
once i find what my gun shoots best i never use anything else but those in it.
