Title: $100-$150 scope.... what would you buy?
Post by: liv2ryd on July 23, 2013, 01:01:47 AM
So, I've picked out and bought my riffle, now I need a scope. This is my budget. Here are some parameters to base the decision off of:

20-100yrds
Mostly plinking and small game
Mounting on a magnum Springer
Weight is not really that important since I'll not be carrying the riffle long distances.
I wear glasses (if that has any effect)

I was looking at the following:

Leapers/UTG
Bushnell
Hawker (stretch the budget a little but..,.,)

Please tell me why you would choose what you recommend.

I would say what Motor said, if you want to lean a little farther into the budget the Nite eye's are on sale nearly 100 dollars off the original price and they are GREAT glass.
heres the link:
http://www.eabco.com/store/rifle-scopes/hawke-nite-eye-scopes-closeout-w/digital-illuminated-reticles/ (http://www.eabco.com/store/rifle-scopes/hawke-nite-eye-scopes-closeout-w/digital-illuminated-reticles/)

I'm going to be ordering one myself I just found it out from the bargain gate and I really like the half mildot version a lot the way it is setup.

The upper priced Accushot Leapers scopes have been very good to me on Magnum Springers.  If you can, purchase a "glass etched" reticle...just 1 less thing to worry about in it's life.   Don't know what rifle you have purchased.  I'd say that if you use Picatinny/Weaver mounting setup, or a good 1pc mount, you'll help keep your scope happy.  Be aware of droop also.  The closer you keep the scope to "optical center", I believe, the better off it'll all be.

I'll second the hawke varmint. I love mine. But if weight is not a concern,  my centerpoint 4-16x44 is a great scope and at $54 from Walmart is tough to beat. Only downside I have found is the weight is a bit hefty.

I had the same issue initially after first finding it.

Its not listed in their lineup, you must search 'hawke' and you will find them.

Promise, they are there!

You'll have to call them, its against Hawke policy to advfertise a price lower than their suggested price. I got my sidewinder for 318 shipped from a different vender

I only just found out about Bud's Gun Shop last month after stumbling across it while doing a pricing search with one of the search engines. They're definitely legit. And definitely great prices on the Hawkes! I've bought two Varmint's within the last month or so from Bud's. Reasonable shipping prices too.

But now that I've got three Varmints (bought the other one refurbished from PA) I'm finding the reticle a bit too busy for my liking. Funny ... but a seller of a Varmint on YF specifically listed that as the reason for selling before I even bought my first one. Oh well ... I've only been back into AG'ing going on almost 4 months & I'm still learning. Especially about scopes. Never had one before. And now I can't keep track of them! But I've been having issues with a couple failing to maintain zero, shifting POI, changes in POI with changes in magnification & poor turret tracking. I'm almost ready to swear off scopes. Seems like I've spent more time troubleshooting scopes in the last few months than I have anything else. So far the Varmints are holding up but I haven't shot them as much because of the issues I've/I'm had/having with a UTG scope & now a Sidewinder scope. And they're mounted on magnums not super magnums. The Aeon scopes from Topgun-Airguns are looking mighty tempting at this point. What the heck do I have to lose? If the recognized names can't hold up why not try a no-name?

Hawke VARMINT for that price point

where do you get a Hawke Varmint in that price range? the only side focus scopes ive seen in the $100-$150 price range have been Leapers SWAT.

oops, my bad, didnt know a Hawke Varmint could be had for very near the basic Sport HD series prices, definitely what i will be getting if they can still be had when i get the money.

Best I can tell, these scopes are not the AO versions.

FWIW, I've bought several handguns from Buds, over time, quite satisfactorily.

AFAIK, the Varmint series is SF, i think the offerings from Buds are missing IR, which doesnt bother me in the least as i just backyard shoot and can pick and choose when i want to shoot (if the conditions are too severe i can always choose not to shoot on that day)

buds gun shop has the 4-16 varmint for $149 delivered . but they guy at hawke strongly suggested to not use them .... and they have a very low rating at resellerratings.com

http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Bud_s_Gun_Shop (http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Bud_s_Gun_Shop)

but they are in good standing with the BBB

http://richmond.bbb.org/Business-Search/url/www_budsgunshop_com/ (http://richmond.bbb.org/Business-Search/url/www_budsgunshop_com/)

SWFA was gonna do their %110 price match against buds on 6-24 varmint and and let me get it shipped for $146.74 . but now SWFA doesn't have the 4-16 or the 6-24 varmints in stock . buds still had a 4-16x44 varmint yesterday and i was gonna try it in spite of the resellerratings score ..... but the girl on the phone didn't inspire my confidence about dealing with them AND also because the guy at hawk said it will be november before they can get new ones to their dealers .... so IF i did have a problem it would have been a few months before i could have gotten it replaced

on second thought, either i will try price match on SWFA with Buds as a reference, or just get the Sport HD 3-9x40 from SWFA for $75, idk why adding AO almost doubles the price on most sites that offer the Sport HD line.

You're on the list.  Either stock is low and already committed to orders, or they have some coming in.  That is "creative" tho ;)
