Title: Benjamin Hand pump, leaking at gauge
Post by: 1nmartin on July 03, 2013, 06:36:22 PM
A few months back, I sent my Benji hand pump off to Sun Optics for a rebuild. When I got it back the gauge was damaged. I called S.O. and they sent me a new gauge within two days. I put the new one on, and it has a small leak when it gets to about 1000 psi. So I took it off, put some pipe thread compound on the threads, but this didn't help at all.

So, how can I stop this leak?

P.S. It really affects the efficiency of the pump.

Only one way to fix a leaky gauge... replace it. For the time being you can go to just about any hardware store, lowe's, home depot ect. and buy a 1/8th NPT brass plug, unscrew the gauge, Teflon tape the plug and screw it in... this ASSUMES the gauge on your gun is in working order so you know fill pressure.

You should call sun and tell them about the issue. I can't imagine they would not be willing to ship out another gauge since the one they sent you was defective. In fact... I'd ask them to ship it express since that is a hassle to have to do it twice and you said they broke the original gauge. Any business worth a darn will take care of mistakes they make.

The problem with Teflon is the angle at which the guague screws in. it isn't completely square so it basically cuts the Teflon back off of the threads making it usless, same with pipe dope.

But technically, brass fittings are tapered so they shouldn't need either of those anyway. I figured that it was the threads leaking, until now.

That's odd, the threads should not cut the tape like you describe. The angle you mention, the gauge sits at an angle, BUT it should be square to the threads, its sounding like your gauge may have been cross threaded? if so, thread tape nor pipe dope will help. Are you sure the leak is at the threads and not from the back of the gauge? put some pressure on the pump/gauge, a little soapy water sprayed/dribbled around the threads and gauge will show you exactly where the leak is, just look for bubbles.

I checked the pump with soapy water and the guage is leaking, not the threads. I feel pretty dumb for not thinking of this before, but I guess that's what makes GTA great. Ill call Sun tomorrow, or Monday if they aren't open and get them to rush me a new gauge.

No reason to feel dumb, now you exactly where the problem is, SO should send you another gauge. I plan to replace mine with one of better quality once it blows... since I have two scuba tanks and a carbon fiber fill station I hardly ever use my pump anymore... to darn LAZY ;D
