Let's play a little game called What If.
What if you had a garage with a window facing out on your 50 yard range?
What if you had a bench set up in there?
What if beside that bench you had this:
http://www.shoeboxcompressor.com/products.html (http://www.shoeboxcompressor.com/products.html)
and this?
http://www.craftsman.com/shc/s/p_10155_12602_00915215000P (http://www.craftsman.com/shc/s/p_10155_12602_00915215000P)
And what if you had a nice PCP, like maybe an MRod or a Hatsan?
What would you say to these What Ifs? It's your turn!
-
What if you had all the ammo you could want for.
-
What if you had all the ammo you could want for.
Good point. I am working on that.
However, the rules of the game are simple. Keep within the boundaries of the what ifs already expressed.
Next player!

what if you had all those things ?
Hmmmm,...
well, I suppose the next thing would be to make sure the window was lubed and in good operating order,...
get a chair set up as the perfect height to the bench,...
maybe add an A/C , fridge full of favorite beverages, stereo to the garage,...
maybe a spotting scope, nice camera,.....
get the smoker going with some nice brisket,...
and then call tri-5-ron, telling him that we are all set up and ready to go. ;D

Is someone about to click on the buy button??

You had me up until "Hatsan"...lol

What if.. there was some very fine reactive targets. ;)

Got all that, but what IF the dog had not stopped to use it he would have caught the rabbit. No pun intended.

Haha, this is fun. ;D
But seriously, I'm just fishing for good intel. See, I have hemmed and hawed about PCP for months now. I've had my eye on a Marauder for quite awhile, even before I joined GTA. Now in a short time, like maybe less than a month, I will have the money to do it right. Shoebox, pancake compressor, and of course the gun. I want a rig I can rely on and enjoy for years to come. You guys probably remember me griping about how expensive it is, yada yada. I enjoy other forms of air guns, but to me this is the logical powerplant for serious shooting.
So now I am doing some meticulous homework. I want to make the right moves. I have plans for what I want my range to be. I will have room to do a little competition style shooting and I may find myself pesting and maybe a little hunting. I am moving into a new place with an acre and a half of land, woods behind, and big fields just to the north. An air gunners dream really. So why not have a gun that I can take advantage of the opportunities I will have?
Look out, I am coming to the Dark Side if all goes well! Better make some cookies. I love chocolate chip! ;D
-
You still have to get a hose. Pellets and tank maybe and, and, and, and so on. Get a 25 and you will have it all I love my 22 and 25 I bet I have 2000 each in mine with all the mods, tanks hoses pellets LW barrels and on and on etc. But I love them just too hot to shoot 104 right now.

I am not putting the Marauder (are any other gun) down. It is what it is.
My advice is to buy a better built gun. Yes it will cost more, but will be worth it and save you money in the long run on buying a second (better) gun.
Now with that said, we all know nobody can be happy with one gun.
The Dark Side is strong. There is no since in fighting it.
And you better not get any cookies before I get mine. WHERE ARE MY COOKIES!

Given that your range is 50 yards, the pest birds, etc. will be in range of your new .177 marauder with only one mildot holdover from a 25 yd. zero! Shazzzaaaammmmm!!!!!!!

Well, this is why I am investing some research time. What do you suggest as a better built gun?
-
What if I had the money to buy any PCP I want?
My rules for picking a gun would be utility and accuracy first, looks would be second. I would want a gun that has a magazine, 22 caliber, and a minimum of 40 shots with consistent fps and trajectory. Also, there seems to me a point of diminishing returns for any gun priced over $800. Beyond that, I don't believe the quality gets better. Just my view.
-
Marauder...good.
Put a melting pot on that bench, stock up a nice lead and tin pile, and put a few 25 cal molds on the shelf. While we're at it, the garage oughta have a mill with a good stock of tooling, and a lathe to keep it company.
Then make the range 100 yards, cause a marauder shooting boolits is waaaay more capable than just 50 yards.
Top it off with Crosman customer service on speed-dial to get more bits to play with...LOL
cheers,
Douglas

Maybe I could buy a strip of land from my neighbors to get that 100 yards too lol. My dad used to cast .357 bullets for his reloads, but I've never done it myself.
Maybe I could hire a machinist to run all that neat stuff! :P

Well, this is why I am investing some research time. What do you suggest as a better built gun?
I’m not trying to sound like a smarty, but you get what you pay for. Well most of the time.
The Marauder is what, a $500 gun. You only get $500 worth of gun. $1000 will get you $1000 worth of gun, so on and so on.
There are many brands/models of guns that will out perform the Marauder. Daystate, Air Arms, and FX just to name a few top companies.
Sure, extra money can be spent to make a not so good gun shoot better, but it will still not be made as good as a better built gun.
My first pcp was a $500 gun. Within a year, I was wanting something better. Second and third guns where Air Arms guns. After three years I sold the first Air Arms gun and only took a $300 lost on what I paid for it. I got $100 a year of use out of that gun.
As far as me (or anyone) telling you what gun to buy, that choice has to be made by you and what you want the gun to do.
The members here can answer just about any questions you may have if you provide us with enough information.
-
The key to getting good advice on an airgun is to first decide how much you are willing to spend and second what you want it to do. I've owned and still own the full gamut from qb78 on the inexpensive side to the FX Royale on the other side. They all have their place and use.
What are your limits?
Joe

My basic premise in going to PCP is accuracy, power, eliminating the need to pump or cock a break barrel. I want to be able to shoot multiple rounds without losing my sight picture by having to pick the gun up off its rest. I may do a little hunting and pest control. I enjoy just sitting on a nice day and shooting paper and reactive targets. I am looking for long term savings by eliminating CO2 costs. I want a gun that is reliable and easy to maintain and perhaps even mod. Not heavy duty stuff at first, but mostly things that will improve handling and looks. Later on as I gain knowledge and tools I may go deeper. I like a nice looking gun to show off too. Maybe the gun that has these qualities is beyond my limits, but I should be able to come close.
Yes, I will have money, but I do not want to spend too much. Nothing over $800. I still have to get support equipment mind you.
So, is there a gun out there that will fill the bill?
-
The $800 limit is just short of a lot of nice guns. Gave the Air Arms S410/S510 a look.
Air Arms are nicely (well) built, very accurate, and depending on what model, 30 ft lb of power range.
Have had two of them for four years and not a lick of trouble from either one. Fill, shoot and keep cleaned and lubed, is all have done to them.
The side leveler on the s410/s510 will enable you to keep the sight picture. The side leveler is the smoothest cocking gun out of all my other guns.
-
If anyone mentioned this already, please forgive.
Add a Chronometer to the mix. I have a 25 cal mrod and love it but I'm thinking about an air-force condor for my next rifle. I may convert the mrod to 22 pr 20 cal and get the condor in 25 or keep the mrod 25 and get the condor in the other caliber. Not sure yet.

Whoa, $1200 for the AA? And then I would have to spend another $800 for support equipment? I am actually budgeting $1400-1500 for everything, gun included. I said I was getting a decent sum of money, not winning the lottery!

You can find used SXX0 rifles for between 700 and 900 all day long.

The Yellow, if you keep your eyes peeled. I paid 900, but got a scope with a used value of $150 thrown in. You just have to be diligent.

WOW! The Air Arms guns have sure went up in price.
The CZ/AA S200 are good guns.
My CZ S200 in .177 cal is the second most accurate gun I own.
However, the S200 lacks the power that most people want. They have the power to take up to squirrel size pest inside 30 yards or so, depends on caliber and ft lbs.
With the small air tube, it is easy to fill with a hand pump. My 11ft lb S200 will get a good 60 shots off a fill.
I also own two Air Force guns. Air Force guns or not that well built. They have the worst accuracy of my pcp’s. They are fun to mod and to shoot, but lack the workmanship of the higher end guns.

I'm glad you agree that the price is high. Also the S200 does not have a gauge. I need that as a newcomer to PCP. I need all the safety features I can get to protect both myself and the gun. I have heard about issues with frame flex with AF guns. Plus they just do not look like comfortable guns to shoot.
So, the search continues.

The AA guns are not cheap. Actually, 1139 for the high falutin walnut/rosewood stock repeater, 999 for the poplar stock repeater, and 899 for the single shot. All have the same action/barrels in their respective carbine trim or long rifle trim. (carbine barrels are slightly shorter than the long rifle, but they are less efficient, noiser, and have smaller air tubes. Same barrel manufacturer, LW.) They either don't make or PA doesn't import the beech stocks anymore. Like I said, hang around, you can get several hundred knocked off on the price.
If you want to buy new or refurbed and want maximum tunability, buy a Marauder (heard that before?). If you really like the action and like the stock, you're done. If you like the action, but not the stock, plunk down another $400 or so on a nice custom stock and now you have spent what your upper budget would have been, not taken the original outlay risk, or could have spent on a used AA, but isn't as easily adjusted. Buy one from Kevin on the Yellow for $325 shipped, refurbed, 90 day warranty and you're ahead of the game and you have a highly adjustable tack driver.

Heck now days everything is over priced. I‘m glad I bought my last pellet gun and 20k pellets before they went up.
I have found that the gauge on the fill adaptor (not one of those cheap adaptor’s) is more accurate than the gauge on my guns. The gauges on every gun I have seen were not well marked off by psi because of there small size.

I am thinking that a lot of folks here own one, plus all the reviews I read are positive. They can't all be wrong. I've been thinking about my gun price ceiling of $800. Crazy. So I am lowering that to $500. With a Shoebox, pancake compressor, and a Ninja tank, that comes out to about $1500. If I can get a refurb MRod, even less. Those high end guns are nice, but they come with a high end price.
After all, this is a hobby, not my living.
-
That's what I did, started low got a 22 had trouble with barrel replaced it then ok. I said well this is great so I got a 25 which has a Green Mountain barrel very accurate. Then went shopping for a shoebox. Got one of the origional and used it a while then w/upgrades and shipping it was close to 700. So I said wht the heck I sold it to a friend and bought the freedom 8 shoebox at 1100. and a couple of used tanks and fill hose. Man this is great. So I went overboard and done all the Mods I could figure out including Lorther Walther barrels at 24 inches. On and on and on. I'd do it again probably all added up I have about 2000+ in each gun. I hit starlings in the head at 75 yds. Anyway you will catch on. Go for it.
