I was trying to find a rifled barrel to try and squeeze the most accuracy out of my 760, and I thought about a 1377 barrel but I would have to have the 1377 breech for it to work, little dissapointed but not deterred. So, I did a little more digging and found the torrent. The guns are the same but the only difference is the barrel assembly and stock. Correct me if I'm wrong but, in this diagram: http://www.crosman.com/pdf/manuals/RCT525%20EVP.pdf (http://www.crosman.com/pdf/manuals/RCT525%20EVP.pdf) Parts 29, 30, 32, and 33 would replace the smooth bore barrel assembly? Right? The only thing I can see different in the assembly is that the torrents barrel has a steel shroud around it like on the 2100s barrel. My one question is will the shroud and barrel be the same diameter as the barrel that's on my 760 now? Or will I have to not use the shroud?

Did you actually mean the new Torrent and not the Recruit? The Recruit is a smoothbore.. It does look similar to the Torrent though...
The diameter of the Recruit shroud is larger, more like a 2100 or Powermaster 66... So the shroud wouldn't just fit the 760 receiver opening and the barrel band... You would have to figure something out to brace the recruit "straw" barrel without the shroud, if you wanted to go that route... You probably can make your own shroud if you can find a pipe with a 7/16 diameter and then add spacers for the barrel...
It's been speculated that a Crosman M4-177 barrel might fit on a 760 but I don't have a definite answer because I could never bring myself to buy one OR find an exploded parts view for one...
If you want to do some work like myself and others have put into their 760, get yourself a long enough rifled .177 7/16 barrel without the side transfer port hole (or cut it off), and turn the rear end down to accept the 760 barrel support. Make sure you prep the barrel lead-in so it doesn't damage the pellet skirts... I lightly glued my barrel into the barrel support with JB weld with no over spill... You may or may not have to recrown the barrel also....

the recruit & torrent sx are smooth bore. if you do a search on torrent sx, there are a number of reports that it is a smooth bore. i went through the same checking a few months back. i saw a number of posts showing a barrel being turned down in a lathe & installed in the 760. looked great, but i don't have access to a lathe, yet. i came up with another solution that i find works great.
i used a 2100 barrel #766C101. got a barrel support from the recruit #66A35 & drilled it out to 5/16 for a press fit for barrel. i inserted the barrel till the transfer ports matched up. i used some plastic spiral wrap sold to organize electrical wires for computers & stereos, wrapped around the barrel to fit the front barrel support & the receiver. this was only temporary till i can figure a more permanent support.
after changing the barrel, groups got tighter, but there still were flyers driving me crazy. i figured out that the pellets were not being seated fully in the barrel. i pulled the magnet out to get a sort of an extended probe & cphp's would seat quite well. i also use the crosman hunting pointed pellets & they would not seat. i made a flow through probe mod for the bolt. i like the results that i got.

Wow, thanks for all the info! I'm going to try the 2100 barrel and make my own shroud. Maybe I'll make it functional. :D Now, to order parts from crosman do I just call or is there a page I haven't seen yet to order?

You'd have to download the appropriate PDFs, look up what ever part numbers that you need, and then call them...
Good Luck! Try and post some pics. I've seen some nice polished copper and brass shrouds, done back in 08...

glad to have been able to help.
here's 2 pics of my 760 barrel mods.

Nice! I should have took pics when I moved modded parts to a new body 2 days ago but I didn't really do anything new..

One of the members here posted that a m4 barrel is rifled and the part # is 417-005. He also mentioned that you should get a new barrel support as they are hard to remove intact.
So I did and the barrel is rifled. Its a direct swap. Accuracy has net been as good as I hoped but is better than the smooth bore. It's still a work in progress at this point.
I'm going to try crowning and see what that does. Never having crowned anything before it seems a good gun the experiment on.

+1
So the M4 barrel does work? I did mine before that gun came out so I never had the chance to experiment..
I actually ran across those same issues... I found that the transition between the barrel support and barrel was also messing up my pellet skirts. So I had to fix that... Once you do your first recrown, you'll find that it really isn't that hard... I got my 760 shooting like a champ...

I'm currently working on adding a rifled barrel to my older model 760. I chose the 24inch .177 Discovery barrel. I'll have to turn the end down so it fits the transfer port. When I get this done, I'll try to post pics.
I do have a mod I want to try but I can't seem to find anyone who has done it already. I want to replace the brass release valve plunger with a Delrin release which uses a tapered seat rather than an O-ring. I have modded my original valve body and transfer port by enlarging the port holes and using a different port seal with a larger ID. This gives me a more rapid air release into the barrel however the sheer velocity of the air rushing past the valve seat seal tends to not so good the seal from the seat. Any suggestions on how to stop this? Has anyone ever done a mod like this before and not documented it?

Yes! Post pics... I'd like to see how it comes out...
How old is your 760? I'm not sure which valve you have...

A Powermaster 66 barrel is rifled. I adapted a barrel and shroud to a 760. Actually I adapted the longer pump tube as well. Pretty easy to do as the receivers are nearly the same.

Made new stocks too.

I have one from the mid-1970s. I got it when I was a kid and I've kept using it throughout the years. I'm modding it now because I want something a touch more powerful with better accuracy and range.
The valve is an all brass job with the aluminum spacer. I did manage to get the valve plunger seal issue fixed this weekend but who knows how long it will remain in good working order. I would really like to get that Delrin valve piston done up so I can see if my design will decrease the air release time and give me an overall increase in velocity. I recently purchased a replacement valve assembly which I will use for a future modification (increasing air volume). If possible, I want to mod this beauty to shoot 1000fps. I know it's high mark to reach. It's also going to take some creative engineering feats to make it happen.

Is the PM66 pump tube the same diameter as the 760 and are the holes in the correct places? What steps did you go thru to adapt the longer pump tube??
Made new stocks too.
I'd love to have a set like that! Love the way they look! Do you have a pattern you would care to share? Would you be interested in making a similar set for me??

The tube for the Powermaster 66 (and the Recruit for that matter) is identical to the 760 tube in all ways except length ( about 1.5 inches). The valves are the same, the piston is the same. The pump linkage and forend are different. It's a direct bolt-in replacement.
As for the stocks, they are made from plywood. Sorry, I've lost my pattern and I don't have the time at the moment to make another set.

That's good info! Thanks!! I had considered using the 2100 tube since it is longer than the 66 but I think you've settled that question for me.

Drat! No problem though. Pretty sure I can pattern from my father's or brother's target rifles and adapt to fit. It's a good excuse for me to buy woodworking tools anyway... ;)

Three layers of 3/8" plywood are just about the same thickness as the 760 receiver. That's what I used.
