Title: Feeling lucky, holding a Beeman R7, thank you GTA
Post by: Rama on June 22, 2013, 10:39:45 PM
Thank you, folks.  I just scored, and I have these forums to thank.

I just recently got back into airguns, primarily as a way to get back into shooting in general and be able to do it at home without spending a ton of money.  I have a basement long enough for a 10 yard range, and I am lucky enough to live in a city that allows the legal, safe use of airguns.  I loved my Crosman 760 as a kid, so...

The gun I grabbed was a Crosman Storm XT (Walmart version of the Quest 1000) in .177, got it off craigslist for a few bucks.  I had been looking at the Hatsan 95 in .22 at Pyramyd Air, but I found a great deal on the Crosman locally and grabbed it, figuring it would be an acceptable (re) starter airgun.  I knew what Weihrauch was (thanks to these forums), but I just assumed that they were way out of my price range.  The Crosman absolutely was a great re-acquaintance to airguns, even though the trigger was horrendous.  I was just about to order a GRT-III from Charlie when...

By pure chance, I found a local pawn shop selling a Beeman R7 in .177 with iron sights for $50.  If not for the time that I have spent reading this forum, I would have assumed that it was just another Walmart gun, and left it there.  This thing is a dream.  It has a few nicks here and there on the wood, but it's still beautiful, and the machine itself is in amazing condition (which is all I really need).  Rock solid hinge, firm but easy cocking, incredibly consistent accuracy, and that amazing trigger.  Holy wow.

Thank you, for nurturing this renewed addiction and giving me the body of knowledge on airguns to recognize what this thing was and snag it when I had the chance.

Thank you.  Yes, I'm enjoying the heck out of it.

I'm just fine with the dings on the stock, but I did already mount the CenterPoint 3-9x32 scope from the Crosman, and I'm having a blast.  Had to remove the iron sights (that wonderful ring on the front obscured the scope picture), but that was easy enough (and I'm keeping them safe in case I want them back on).  I know this scope isn't as nice as the gun, but it'll do, for now.  And yes, I'm sure I'll be doing some disassembly and lubing shortly.

I'm about to re-list the Crosman (sans scope) on craigslist and give someone else a nice deal on a very functional gun.  I'm just not sure whether or not I want to play around with disassembling the trigger and playing around with it a bit first, just for the experience.

Either way, still feelin' lucky.

Well, you ARE lucky.. That $50 R-7 is a once in a lifetime deal. Congrats! You need to frequent  that pawn shop more often. ;) Apparently, they have their heads WAY UP their backsides when it comes to pricing goods put out for sale..

In 2013 there is NO excuse for a Pawn Broker to undervalue such goods. A fair quick sale price would have been $195 and if it was listed on any auction or classifieds site with pics, it would have sold in a few hours. Clean, used  R-7s in .177 are VERY hard to find because most folks never sell them. Mine gets shot almost every day and it will be the last airgun I would sell.

Is your rifle marked "Huntington Beach,CA"? What serial number range is it? We can date it for you by the serial number.. It looks to have been made in the last 10-15 years or so..

My own R-7 is a circa 2008.

Yeah, I really do recognize that I was lucky.  Also, thanks again to this site (and you folks) for giving me the general understanding of different airguns and models so that I could take advantage of the opportunity.

My own R-7 which is a circa 2008.

My rifle is indeed marked Huntington Beach, which seems to indicate it was made after 1994, if my research is correct.  The serial is 1566XXX.  The front sight mounts on a dovetail, which I've read was replaced with splines later on, so it may be an older one in that range (which I am A-OK with).  No matter the date, I too have a hard time imagining myself selling it.  It's just too wonderful of a machine.  It does exactly what it should, and it does it well.

I've heard that Weihrauch will help you with date of manufacture if you email them with the serial, which I've done.  We'll see what they say.  Either which way, I'll be shooting this one on a regular basis, not putting it in a display case.  I bought this to use it, and I'm going to do just that.

Based on the serial number, it looks to be made in 2002..

What an outstanding deal on a class A rifle!!

I'd be darned if I would have walked away from it for that price, even if it was in less than your described condition.

  You did good my friend.

Nice find. The best $50 you have ever spent I'm sure.
